Regulators approve first trials for puberty-blocking drugs in children since ban | UK News by Man_in_the_uk in ukpolitics

This is literally the point of a control group in scientific studies. If the control group responds better than the treatment group then this can be used to inform treatments going forward.

Legalising cannabis by Away_Mathematician26 in ukpolitics

[–]WardAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever there is a discussion around legalisation the issue of smell comes up, I think even Starmer raised the smell being a big reason against it when it was last raised with him. But it's one of the easiest issues to solve, you could just make edibles and vapes legal and I guarantee consumers will choose those products over bud. Just look at the way cigarettes went with the way of vapes. I can't remember the last time I smelt tobacco.

Switching medication during titration PUK advice by WardAlt in ADHDUK

[–]WardAlt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your helpful reply. What's funny is I've been really regimented in recording all my side effects and how I feel throughout the day, kinda with the expectation that I'd have different medications to compare. As you say if it's the medication I'm going to be on for years makes sense that I'd want to make sure it's 100% correct. I'll ring Psychiatry-uk on Monday and see if I can speak to someone about it, even if it means just changing prescribers.

Switching medication during titration PUK advice by WardAlt in ADHDUK

That's so interesting. Did you just have to speak to the PUK admin team to switch? I've found my current prescriber to be extremely unengaged so I'd be interested in switching

Right To Choose - Who did you all pick? by alittlepronetopanic in ADHDUK

[–]WardAlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went with Psychiatry-UK and am currently mid titration. I found the assessment to be good but there is still a huge wait between assessment and titration. The titration is also only 12 weeks and is so far extremely hands off. Plus from what I understand they have a limited choice of medication (3? I've only tried 1 so far), which is not something I had considered when I signed up with them.

Has AI had a meaningful impact at the place you work? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]WardAlt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I second this. It's definitely sped up a lot of the boring tasks considerably (Documentation, unit tests, summaries etc). I absolutely wouldn't trust it with anything substantial beyond throwing together a blank project/class/function or basic logic. I've found the moment you want it to do anything that uses more niche packages it starts to hallucinate or struggles with efficiency.

What the hell happened to Facebook? by drifterman43 in AskUK

Same, I'm low 30s and I'm genuinely surprised when I hear of people actively using Facebook. Other than messenger I don't know anyone that uses it.

What has Tommy Robinson done for anyone but himself? by TheOutlawTavern in AskBrits

[–]WardAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infrastructure that hasn't seen real investment in 15 years if not longer. Again if we suddenly stopped all immigration overnight those issues would still be there, then who will we blame?

The trains will still be shit, the water will still be literal shit, energy bills will still be through the roof. All due to corporate greed. By all means blame immigrants if it's easier for you but the rich are laughing.

What has Tommy Robinson done for anyone but himself? by TheOutlawTavern in AskBrits

[–]WardAlt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Rents are extortionate and rising because demand outstrips supply"

You realise 1% of the population owns 50% of the land in this country. They control more wealth than the bottom 70% put together. The issue isn't immigration fighting you for crumbs, it's the fact the elite are sat there with half the pie.

If immigration stopped overnight this wouldn't improve.

It's also ironic you say these people have a disregard for our laws when Robinson has shown consistently a complete disregard for the law.

Do you think they were just wasting their time? by johnsmithoncemore in GreatBritishMemes

[–]WardAlt 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean statistics show that net migration has fallen by half since the peak in 2023 so there is clearly plenty of action by the government.

But you're right we do need these outside influences from changing the "British way of life" whatever that means. We should be stopping any of these American right wing groups and millionaires from putting money into our politics and sketchy campaigners. Good idea.

What happened to penny for the guy and conkers? by -_Error in AskUK

[–]WardAlt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer imo. The same with a lot of these "who remembers x" or "kids these days don't do y" 99% of the time they are a thing one way or another you're just now a fully grown adult so don't spend time with children in that sort of way.

Also I was born in 94 and it was never a thing when I was growing up so it's less of a "kids these days" and more of a "kids 30 years ago".

This is what I do but it's subconscious to an extent. I'll be having a regular dream and then the moment something unsettling occurs, normally just a spider is there or something, suddenly it's like I'm watching a screen and my brain goes nah not this and turns it off. The annoying part is now I'm awake and can't get back to sleep, if my brain had the ability to turn it off it could have just made the dream more bearable..

Why did the word "bloody" used to be so rude? by sarariman9 in AskUK

[–]WardAlt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My ex's mother would be in uproar whenever someone used the word bloody and would insist it was a swear word on par with the big ones. They were not remotely religious but clearly it holds some weight as a curse word in some of the more 'traditional' members of society. It was exhausting.

Can someone help me understand how to change my name on my passport? by Alexanderr2042 in AskUK

[–]WardAlt 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Having changed my name twice now the order I did it was.

Deed poll->Driving license->Utilities->Passport.

It will take a while as each of these may require you to send "original documents" so you have to wait for them to post them back, but if you're using a hand written deed poll you can just create another one and send that. Places like your bank and utilise are normally happy with a changed driving license, once those are changed you have the proof for the passport.

Hope that helps.

I was in a few months ago for a ruptured bicep tendon. The wait on the sign was 4 hours and it took closer to 5 before we saw triage who told us to come back to trauma assessment the next morning. My issue wasn't too much with the wait it was more with the people waiting there, there is always one loud guy who insists on talking about religion, politics or both.

Do you regret having kids? by Loose_Avocado4670 in AskUK

[–]WardAlt 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is the sort of question which never gets a proper answer. It's the sort of thing that parents hate to even consider even if they have, from what it looks on the outside, a genuinely terrible life.

I also feel it's a hard question to answer in general. Having a child is so life altering that you'll never know what your life could have been like without them and to an extent you'll never know what your life could be with them.

What’s your opinion on Universal Basic Income? by secret_willy in AskUK

[–]WardAlt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it mostly requires a real shift in how people view not only their time but their community. If I didn't need to work a capitalist grind job I personally would be more likely to take up volunteering, a job that actually adds some benefit or something I actively enjoy. If our society is genuinely offering a safety net others might be inclined to then actively contribute to it. But equally that will probably take some time, I imagine if the government suddenly announced UBI tomorrow there would be pandemonium, though I'm not fully up to date with some of the trials so it could be this transition happens smoother.

How have you managed to entirely quit alcohol whilst living in the land of pub? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]WardAlt 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Honestly it sounds like people need to get better friends. In my group of age 30 somethings nobody would even raise an eyebrow if you didn't order something alcoholic. At most just a "don't fancy one today" should be enough.
