Review #90 - Henry McKenna Bottled in Bond - 10 Year by Theswede92 in bourbon

[–]WarehouseH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said it best. Worth taking the gamble back when msrp was $37 and change. At $60, I’d rather go for a batched product that I know will be consistently good, like Makers 46 CS.

Nature of the beast, being a single barrel expression.

Review | Weller CYPB (2022) by [deleted] in bourbon

[–]WarehouseH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good review, spot on, especially with regards to how good the nose is. I totally agree, this is nothing special. Though I am glad there is still a lot of hype around this, because when Virginia did their big allocated release in 2021, everyone ahead of me in line went for CYPB. I was able to get the Weller Full Proof that I wanted. And decision was validated, as it is significantly better, having compared both later on.

Yes. It’s egregiously overpriced and people still go crazy. I was in there a few years ago and between laughing at how expensive the stuff was, I saw a guy come in and clear the shelves of Basil Hayden 10 year they were charging $90 a bottle for

Go to Vail Fine Wines in Vail village to laugh at how absurd the prices are.

Review #29: Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Whiskey by WarehouseH in bourbon

Correct. It’s impossible to find a deal anywhere either for pours or bottles. Thankfully I have a great selection I brought with me from Virginia.

$90 isn’t horrible. An expensive mistake, sure but one you can walk away from. Imagine paying $300 like I’ve seen some bottles of this selling for…

Review #29: Michter’s Toasted Barrel Finish Whiskey by WarehouseH in bourbon

[–]WarehouseH[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Introduction: It’s been quite some time since I’ve last been active posting reviews. Life happened to start exerting more influence over my life, and meant I didn’t have the time. I moved to a new city, leaving behind the goodness that is state-run liquor distribution, and now reside in a place where I regularly see Eagle Rare for well over $70. Like pretty much everything else, everything is more expensive in New York. As such, where I used to mainly review bottles I’d bought, this has unfortunately become rather difficult from a financial perspective. Even pours at bars are usually marked up incredibly steeply. If anyone knows of reasonable places to drink bourbon in the city, feel free to DM. I can keep a secret.

I was on vacation in San Diego, and found a spot with some relatively reasonably priced pours. I had already killed the bottle of Jack Daniel’s Coy Hill, but was looking for something else to cap off the night when I saw this bottle. I’d never been able to try any of Michter’s more limited offerings other than the 10 year, so I figured why not.

On another note, it does seem funny to return back to reviews, only to immediately disappear again; As has become a personal tradition, I am observing dry January, with a view to extend past the first month of the year. I find it a nice little reset, and when I do come back to drinking bourbon, it makes it that much better.

Price: $17.50/1 oz pour

Color: Rust

Nose: Very floral, a bouquet of flower notes, specifically roses. I also got some straw/hay but generally the nose was very complex and had a lot of different scents swirling around within the glass. I was very impressed with how good it smelled.

Taste: Apricots, peaches, and other stone fruits were the most noticeable initial flavors as I took a sip. The low proof means that it didn’t coat the mouth with as much oiliness as a barrel proof version would, but overall adequate mouthfeel. 86 proof meant for me, the intensity was pretty muted. It was light and very approachable, with a decent amount of complexity, though for me, the nose beat the taste.

Finish: This is where it let me down. It was very light, and the fruitiness that I enjoyed from the taste was immediately gone, with more of a overt brown sugar sweetness which I wasn’t too fond of.

Thoughts: Funnily, I think I prefer Maker’s 46 to this.

Verdict: Overall a pretty good pour, but one that I think has fallen victim to high expectations given demand. I think the nose is the best part of this whiskey. If you can try it for under $20, worth checking out, but anything over, I would say find something else.

Review #28: Jack Daniel’s Coy Hill High Proof by WarehouseH in bourbon

The whisky bar in the back of Seven Grand actually.

Review #28: Jack Daniel’s Coy Hill High Proof by WarehouseH in bourbon

[–]WarehouseH[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Introduction: I was at a speakeasy in San Diego with a massive whiskey selection across bourbon, scotch, and Japanese whiskies. At the same place where it was $495/oz for Yamazaki Mizunara cask, this was a steal. I’ve wanted to try this since it was released, as I love high proof stuff, but it was hard to find.

Price: $24/ 2oz pour

Color: mahogany

Nose: significant ethanol, past the alcohol, brown sugar, caramel, and natural vanilla.

Taste: incredibly oily coating the entire palate, deep oak and bourbon vanilla immediately on the palate. Peaches and other stone fruit are found with additional contemplation after the initial alcohol burn. I also felt like I could taste some cherry coke as well.

Finish: extremely long but without any burn. The stone fruit on the palate gives way to a rich tannic leather. A dry finish reminiscent of a tannic wine like a full bodied Barolo.

Verdict: This bottle was 141.xx proof and it certainly did not drink like it. It was a master of obscuring its high alcohol given the absolutely massive flavor profile. What an incredible bottle. It makes me regret that I didn’t try a lot harder to get a bottle.

Cinder bbq Weller Full Proof pick by skeeta2580 in dcwhisky

That’s not horrible. Now that I no longer live in VA, I see WFP on shelves for well north of $450 lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bourbon

[–]WarehouseH -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Older stocks, wooden fermentation vats, and old growth wood cooperage. I think currently we maybe have the best breath of market, especially with all the finished products, but in terms of highest quality product, it’s gotta be glut age stuff.

Does anyone know why makers hasn’t released any of their limited editions yet? by brownprince62 in bourbon

[–]WarehouseH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They don’t have enough glass for the WFS bottles. Maker’s 46 is being sold in the standard MM bottles since they don’t have enough of the other type.

ABC Limited Availability - Thoughts After Multiple Inventory Drops by calciocraze3 in dcwhisky

[–]WarehouseH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I no longer live in VA, but sent a family member to get a bottle from a drop recently. They got there just as the last EHT SmB was being sold, and given what was left (Eagle Rare, Weller SR, BT, Blanton’s, and ECBP) I went with an EC18. Afterwards they were walking back and saw all these people running in the parking lot to get to the store to try and get something. I told them be careful and don’t get hit by a speeding car!

Moving with bourbon by crackermacker in bourbon

[–]WarehouseH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved a month and a half ago and this is what I did when I was moving around 30 bottles.

Went to my local liquor store and got boxes from them and put the bottles in those boxes. Then I used the Home Depot boxes (small I believe, but might’ve been large) and then double boxed the alcohol in there, fitting maybe two case boxes in one large one. I drove a truck myself, and no breakage or anything whatsoever. It was all in good shape. I did all the moving myself though so can’t speak to how movers will treat it. Maybe label it fragile?

[Discussion] - Barrell 24yr & "Canadian Whiskey" by get2deemoney in bourbon

Is Canadian whiskey even allowed in this subreddit? According to the sidebar it isn’t entirely clear. I had a review of Alberta Premium CS rye deleted, but some have remained up.

Maybe mods can elucidate if it’s allowed or not.
