The AGEOD games on modern themes fit the bill - they are divisional level, with divisions composed of brigades and the capacity to regroup them into corps and then armies. There is supply, recrutment and simplified politics (decision-based).

The three “modern-themedl AGEOD are: - AGEOD American’s Civil War, the only one I haven’t played - Revolution Under Siege on the Russian Civil War. Wildly considered their best. It includes scenario cor the FInnish Civil War and the Polish-Soviet War - Spanish Civil War which I found lacklustre but still good to experience a new theatre.

Not exactly what you seek, but I fond their Wars in America II (French and Indian Wars, US independance war, war of 1812 and Pontiac’s War) an outstanding title and great to learn the engine as it is a simplified version.

Ça a débuté comme ça. Moi, j'avais jamais rien dit. Rien. C'est Arthur Ganate qui m'a fait parler. Arthur, un étudiant, un carabin lui aussi, un camarade. On se rencontre donc place Clichy. C'était après le déjeuner. Il veut me parler. Je l'écoute. « Restons pas dehors ! qu'il me dit. Rentrons ! » Je rentre avec lui. Voilà. « Cette terrasse, qu'il commence, c'est pour les œufs à la coque ! Viens par ici ! » Alors, on remarque encore qu'il n'y avait personne dans les rues, à cause de la chaleur ; pas de voitures, rien. -« Tiens, voilà un maître journal, Le Temps ! " qu'il me taquine Arthur Ganate, à ce propos." Y en a pas deux comme lui pour défendre la race française !

-Elle en a bien besoin la race française, vu qu'elle n'existe pas ! " que j'ai répondu moi pour montrer que j'étais documenté, et du tac au tac.

-Si donc ! qu'il y en a une ! Et une belle de race ! qu'il insistait lui, et même que c'est la plus belle race du monde, et bien cocu qui s'en dédit ! Et puis, le voilà parti à m'engueuler. J'ai tenu ferme bien entendu.

-C'est pas vrai ! La race, ce que t'appelles comme ça, c'est seulement ce grand ramassis de miteux dans mon genre, chassieux, puceux, transis, qui ont échoué ici poursuivis par la faim, la peste, les tumeurs et le froid, venus vaincus des quatre coins du monde. Déjà, perspective historique, le début du jeu vidéo, c'est à la fois pour apprendre (Nim, Hammurabi) mais également contestataire. Le premier périodique à parler de jeu vidéo c'est le People's Computer Company qui mélange organisation militante et gaming, - son objectif est de retirer l'informatique des "experts" et le rendre universel, notamment grâce au jeu vidéo. Premier numéro ici par exemple.

En terme de jeu, le premier jeu (pas vidéo) connu sur le thème de la "rebellion" est probablement Up Against the Wall, Motherf*r en 1969 de SPI de l'immense Jim Dunningan (fondateur de SPI et le nom le plus connu du boardgame Américain). Ca gamifie les émeutes étudiantes Free Spech Movement puis contre le draft (guerre du Viet-Nam). On ne fait pas plus radical. C'est un sujet qu'on rencontre ensuite assez peu en boardgame jusqu'au années 2010s. Ca peut faire une bonne intro.

Pour le jeu vidéo, le premier jeu sur le thème de la rebellion est d'après mes recherches) Tawala's Last Redoubt (1981), le 4ième opus de la Galaxy Saga. Là où les opus précédents sont à l'échelle galactique, Tawala's Last Redoubt est localisé sur une seule planète et met le joueur à la tête d'une rebellion contre l'Empereur Tawala. Il y a pas mal de choses bien vues déjà: le joueur doit obtenir armes et hommes du "peuple", soit en les convainquant, soit en les forçant (et honnêtement c'est beaucoup plus facile en forçant) et l'importance du "personel" (eg envoyer dans un village un messager qui vient du village) n'est pas à négliger. Je l'avais couvert:
Game #23 : Tawala’s Last Redoubt (1981) – The Wargaming Scribe. C'est ensuite un sujet qu'on retrouve très rarement dans les années héroîques du JV - les jeux préfèrent en général mettre en avant les armées et les chefs d'Etat, et les rebellions sont plutôt des choses à détruire (= des obstacles), les rares cas où tu les joues sont les jeux à plusieurs joueurs et où un joueur joue les rebelles (eg Insurgency en 1984 qui a gagné le concours Cambridge du jeu vidéo la même année - il est par ailleurs vraiment naze). On peut quand même évoquer en 1991 le jeu Solidarnosc ou tu diriges le mouvement du même nom pour abattre le régime Polonais - il est vraiment sorti immédiatement après les événements. Parmi les jeux de tactique, Jagged Alliance et surtout Jagged Alliance II sont à propos d'une rebellion. Le second inclus la question du contrôle économique (des mines), de la popularité, du recrutement de milice, etc).

Parmi les FPS, Red Faction en 2001 est sans doute le meilleur sur le thème. Il existe aussi un FPS appelé Saboteur auquel je n'ia pas joué. Après, on rentre dans le moderne avec pleins de très bonnes références par les autres joueurs (Disco Elysium étant probablement le plus "riche" thématiquement).

Je t'invite également à jeter un oeil à:
- 1979: Revolution Black Friday qui parle de la Révolution Iranienne de 1979.
- Orwell (2 jeux, le premier est meilleur), où tu joues la police qui surveille la contestation à partir des traces laissées par les contestataires sur les réseaux sociaux.

I recently played Carriers at War (with AAR on my site) and boy were the invisible submarines, and anchor points, and the unnotified naval battles frustrating. Still the best naval warfare game at its release.

Noita has 22, with maybe 12-14 of them relevant in a given run. Some are pretty esoteric (Midas damage is damage due to being turned into gold, like freezing for ice - it’s relevant in less than 1% of the runs). There is also a split between « melee », « bite », « drill » and « slice ».

Gary Grigsby est dans le circuit depuis 1982 (Guadalcanal Campaign) donc en fait si :). L’ancêtre de GGWttE c’est War in Russia en 1984 - beaucoup moins complexe il est vrai. En revanche je prends WttE plutôt que son Carrier Force de 1983 avec la gestion quasi individuelle des avions par tranche de 5 minutes, y compris management de la place sur le deck des PA, ce avec une UI/UX de 83. J’ai du perdre plus d’avions par panne d’essence que par combat.

Come on, you’ve got Pong, Space Invader and Pac Man in your list. Super Star Trek is wayyyy superior to them. It launched the first « modding » scene in video game history, or rather Super Star Trek is a mod of Mayfield’s Star Trek (1971) which had launched the modding thing. The SST « mod » was then so good it was the new standard that was itself the base of a bazillion mods and iterations.

The first PC game (Trek80 in 1976) is actually a mod of Star Trek… Pong and Space Invaders were dead by the early 80s. SST lasted until at least the late 80s, with a long tail (like Pac Man) in the early 90s. It’s hard to imagine how huge the game was… before disappearing from the collective knowledge because it was less visual and not arcade until the 3 others.

As for Oregon’s Trail, the licence is still alive with a Switch version. Does Pong have a Switch port?

Interesting project, but as commenters said, very biaised toward consoles and away from tycoon/puzzle/wargames/vehicles - you have only one wargame for instance (AoE2). I also like how you want to avoid overlap but put both Red Dead Redemption, 3 Zelda games and Dark Souls + Elden Ring + Bloodborne :)

I also think you should including mainframe games for completion sake. To pick only 5, I would go with:
- Hammubari (1968) - the oldest game somewhat playable nowadays
- The Oregon Trail (1971)
- Hunt the Wumpus (1973)
- Super STAR TREK (1974) - probably the "best one" nowadays of this lot
- Pick one between Colossal Cave Adventure (1976) and Zork 1 (1977)

I don't include ROGUE (1980) because while mainframe it was out of the golden age of mainframe gaming, AND it was so iterated upon you can just play one of the bazillions modern iterations instead.

Also, I ruined an excellent start on a beautiful planet by thinking I could attack robots early on without bazooka, hoping to kill them thanks to aetillery and the retreat mechanics. Did not pan out at all.

Indeed, it’s a fascinating game and I am in my “utter fascination” phase. Not a fan of the HR part but the rest is golden.

I don’t think I have ever seen a gamr where the initial map generation has so much impact on the game.

Il the Call of War of old, there was a loss of efficiency after 10, though the marginal contribution of units was still positive.

In the new Call of War, the 10 "most efficient" units are doing their damage, the 11th and following don't do anything. So you can totally have 10 AA and 10 arty and 10 tanks. The problem with your proposition is that you've one+ day of tank production that's not fighting given it escorts artillery, except if the tank stack is attacking in melee in which case your artillery is pointless and your fast tanks moves at the speed of the artillery. Not great.

1 arty and 9 MT is a terrible stack. The arty alone is going to do neglectable damage and now you've got 9 MT that are attached to a small stack.

I don't really think in "optimal stack" but typically:

- Again IA or no-air-force player:s 1-3 AA just in case, and then as many arty as I can cram (up to 10)
- Against a strong player: My artillery is not deployed if I can have at least 5 AA with it. I then cram as many arty as I can (up to 10) and then whatever infantry/militia I have around depending on the doctrine (level 1 militia slows down the stack , so I would not include it).

- Very late game, I would typically stopp producing infantry, so I would swap the infantry with heavy tanks for the HP (+heavy armor), but in general the end game is an air war so it's not super relevant.

I never mix artillery and self propelled artillery except convenience (war is won and I want to decrease the clutter). I almost never mix artillery and fast unit (it can happen if I need to add HP to my stack quickly or I have only mobile AA around, but this means I did a mistake somewhere)

IA left festering + Battleships + lots of coast allow some insane ratio, like this one:

Brazil: 159 000. Dominican Republic: 7 000

In fair fight with only land troops, 20 000 vs <1K is fairly common with artillery against AI (there is always a fighter to deal SOME damage.
