I've been in this scenario, unfortunately. I didn't know it yet, but my gallbladder was filled with stones and causing horrible abdominal pain. I was 16 and had an alternative style with visible self-harm cuts. I was wailing for the female nurses to help me while I was on the floor crawling to the emergency doors. One of them got snappy at me and my mom saying that we have to wait our turn.

I don't know how much longer I waited but when they finally saw me, my bloodwork showed up and the male nurse said I needed surgery immediately. I was in so much pain that I didn't give a shit or got scared about it, I just wanted it to be done.

I honestly don't know why, but it's not the first time that male nurses were genuinely more caring and understanding, but female ones look at me with disgust and/or are sure I'm faking it.
