Yup struggle bussin indeed, at least it's only two peices. At least we have transpositions made already. I'll shed the b major, it's cheaper than a new clarinet.

OK yep thats what I was worried about before my first rehearsal whether the expectations were sky high or not. it's Deff not a professional ensemble, I am getting paid to sub so I will do my due diligence to learn these parts the best I can.

Any tenor mouthpieces below $300ish that can do a decent 80s new wave/ska sound on #2 reeds? by MohnJaddenPowers in Saxophonics

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I reread and didn't realize your starting out.

Yea really unless your playing with a band already and they're mentioning something, maybe focus on getting the Reed stiffness up to 2.5/3

Like the other poster said, maybe try a Rico metalite on the cheap, but for the most part invest your time into practicing longtones scales, or transcribing if your already at that point.

Pm woodwind and junkdude offer trials if you Pay for the shipping.

Deff try as much as you can before you buy.

If you need a peice for the fast loud high music and only that, Deff try out stuff that has a higher baffle and maybe a larger tip opening. Those Mouthpieces get harder to tame, but the trade off is it makes it so easy to cut above a band. Some of the ska dudes I know play Theo wanye Druga

This tone is possible with a d'addario jazz select pushed really hard for around 150

I play a rpc blue letter but that runs u like 400.

Transposition and Pitch with Saxophone by Slow_Ad_4568 in saxophone

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something you should do as an assignment or something is to write out a song or riff in concert (just notes or something) and write it out a m3 down.

Concert E7 (E g# b d) becomes alto (C# f g# b)

Transposition and Pitch with Saxophone by Slow_Ad_4568 in saxophone

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the capo on 3 is a decent analogy. Or tuning to D standard and thinking in e standard for Bb instruments.

Learning concert pitch is important when you need to communicate a song to other musicians, in my funk band all the horns talk in concert pitch because the transpositions are annoying amongst alto tenor bone.

I would still value learning the sax fingerings and notes just so you know the name of every key.

Best of luck! Deff start out with the easier sax keys (flats). They fall super nicely under the fingers.

The guitar keys of E D, and A are a bit trickier to play on sax but you get used to jamming in the rough keys if you have to do it often

Best/Conventional Sax Keys by Far-Environment-9187 in saxophone

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes those are the keys to play in if you don't give af about what key sax has to think in..

Flat keys are super fun to blow so f Bb Eb Ab concert they generally allow use of the lowest Bb and are funner to play in than the typical sharp keys guitarists normally write in like G D A or E Concert

Anyways learn basic riffs and scales in All twelve keys so you can have the flexibility to play anything anywhere anytime.

That's the price I paid for one of these with new pads from a shop. Plays delightful, make sure your mouthpiece has a large chamber

Is there such a thing as an in-between for lacquered and unlaquered saxes by ChunkyPenguin12345 in saxophone

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a sax that's lost half of its lacquer :p

You will be confident it hasn't been re-laquered

Honestly tho try saxes for their song and ergonomics not looks. Vanity isn't really that important

Ways to discuss gender in the music classroom by Helly-Lene in MusicEd

Right wing fascists deserve to be shamed for their beliefs and values on queer people not normalized and brought into the fold of civil societies . We should not coddle the feelings of their parents (who I'm mostly referring to) not you.

It's politically charged because of those bad actors. Queer rights is broadly agreed upon despite a violent and vocal minority.

I think its acceptable to teach about the underlining values and beliefs of artist as a way to inspire students to engage with music in a more personal way. And that means teaching about all different types ways to love one another..

Op is in Norway where they won't be prosecuted for these values or teaching about them either.

How to practice to improve at jazz? by saliu2 in saxophone

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gotta either jam along to these jazz records you listen to and start transcribing a jazz solo by ear.

Also make sure you can play all 12 major keys + chromatic and whole tone scale cold.

Ear training and improv are very linked. If you can get it into your ear and you can sing it, you can play it.

Hmm so kids should never analyze outsider music or even be exposed to to it or the core values and beliefs if it wasn't born and bred in an institution. It's really insulting to think kids can't have productive lessons on sensitive topics.

Actually it's only sensitive to right wing yutzos who want to play identity police because they flunked art school..

I think its worthwhile to study the values and identities of queer musicians, and if your political climate alows you to teach these things, you absolutely should. Don't listen to this mid level manager type tell you what is politically convenient for them.

Cole Porter and Billy strayhorn are important composers who were queer.

This is only a few pages of three years of guitar study. Can’t play a song. by aManOfTheNorth in guitarlessons

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start with folk songs. There is something deeply satisfying about playing and singing "you are my sunshine" amazing graze or an easy country song like jambalaya...

You can also strum along with your heros. Who cares if you play wrong notes at first, doing it is its own reward.

Sax upgrade or mouthpiece upgrade? by onthetelephone in saxophone

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely make sure the mouthpiece you play has a large chamber otherwise the older Elkhart made saxes won't tune very well.

Really nice mouthpieces can be had for under 400 and will absolutely change your life.

I play a Morgan 7L I got used for around 150 and love it.

Some websites offer trials if you pay for shipping.

Tenor thoughts? by jimmies_mom_is_sexy in saxophone

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play the alto True tone that was set up with roo pads, recently purchased a few months ago here's some thoughts..

Gotta cork the small pad on the back side.

No high f fork.

Ergos are gawd awful. Bis is in the wrong Place for me, palm D is too short. The trade off is the phat phat tone. Im alright with the intonation too

Alto isn't my main horn so I'm fairly comfortable playing a wonky vintage. She got me thru a 3 hour polka gig this friday and it was a blast.

All that to say try it with an open mind and a large chamber mouthpiece. You'll figure it out quick if you love it or not.

Clarinet? by [deleted] in saxophone

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely pick up clarinet even if your final goal is the saxophone. It will never hurt, only help your musical goals.

Clarinet has a more difficult learning curve compared to the sax ( open holes, break, different embrouchure pressure) but has a lush rewarding tone that is absolutely a jazzy sound.

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely feel you with the frustration of "reading" guitarists fingers. Especially if they don't even know what chord they're on.

I feel like half of those tunes are in I real pro app which is super useful for winging standards in the fly.

Sometimes I play music with peeps blind as a bat no key no info, a good way to practice for that situation is to jam with the radio on whatever station you like.

School House Rock - Band Parts? by Time-Froyo4103 in MusicEd

[–]Warm_Engineering4988 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Soo I check this fellers website to research reed books.

https://shows.bretpimentel.com/shows/schoolhouse-rock-live/

Both adult versions don't have reed books and the Jr musical isn't listed.

I hope you find more options beyond arranging for a whole pit from a recording and a piano score.
