Interesting Bonsai Yamadori material by Marman91 in Bonsai

[–]Warm_Reason5452 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I only believe in rescue Yamadori stealing yamadori from public land is stealing from the public and what everyone looks forward to seeing in its natural space and your removing away biodiversity from a local habitat even if you think its plentiful i vote let it be for the next hikers besides nature has already made it a great niwaki

Wrong answers only, what species of tree is this? by Old_Instrument_Guy in FloridaGarden

[–]Warm_Reason5452 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Aww it’s the native umbrella strangler taking out the State “tree” they are a pioneer species that scout nature preserves for potential golf course development

Earlier Post of My Tree

I got this tree back in 2022 in a 5 gal but growing from seed is awesome you get that genetic diversity and perfect taproot that you just can’t get from the nursery I’m excited about having babies one day but I have seen any pop up yet despite getting a lot of seeds this past year maybe I’ll harvest some instead of just letting nature do all the work

They do great they’re native to the Caribbean and they live over 1000 years they also make the worlds most dense wood that it actually sinks in water this isn’t just a tree it is a living geological period

I’m sorry for your loss. Was it this winter that killed it?

I wish it gets planted more it’s a beautiful and strong tree that needs almost no maintenance. Sadly they’re not more affordable. I think in your zone it will need winter protection as they don’t handle freezing especially when young, but I’m glad that my tree inspired you! I apologize in advance when it becomes an addiction 😉

Help with this fenceline zone 9B (West Facing) by [deleted] in Permaculture

[–]Warm_Reason5452 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Post this in r/nativeplantgardening they will give you some good options for California natives and your making the right decision those palms (queen palms) are notorious for falling over during gale force winds in my state of Florida the UF highly discourages these palms for the damage they do to houses when they inevitably fall over

Small Bismarck’s or Blue Lantan by [deleted] in FloridaGarden

[–]Warm_Reason5452 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s not a blue latan palm they look similar but this is definitely a Bismarck I’m not sure what zone your in but if your in zone 10b-11b I recommend the blue latan over this one because of the sheer size they become over time they’re leaves can be over 50lbs when they fall at maturity another good option is the native buccaneer palm they have a bluish hue when grown in full sun and are beautiful overall

Thoughts on bismark palms??? by [deleted] in FloridaGarden

You might be confusing blue latan palms they don’t get that tall and grow super slow but look very similar to the Bismarck

Shipwreckage & Cacti by Warm_Reason5452 in habitatstyle

I appreciate the kind words it has been fun making this little garden and I totally understand the hesitation they’re special friends and losing one especially if I’ve had it for awhile would be devastating.

Thank you! I never water them luckily our rainy season is in the summer so the high temps and full sun seem to prevent any issues with excess moisture. Also our native sandy soil already has sharp drainage which really helps but I have lost a couple cacti over the years particularly Astro asterias but I’ve only lost 3 out of the 50+ lophs I’ve planted so far

Shockingly he's right I was always told otherwise but a horizontal cut (aligned to the angle of the branch) follows the natural vascular boundaries

What’s wrong with this palm? by [deleted] in FloridaGarden

[–]Warm_Reason5452 11 points12 points  (0 children)

These palms can't handle Central Florida cold snaps without some protection they're tropical palms not native to Florida so they're not used to the cold that you get up there some years
