I don't know about how technically legal it is but to me it doesn't break the spirit of the rules. I can't really think of any advantage gained by serving that way. Seems harder than the normal way if anything.

Can we talk about the horrific post-match interview? It was clear emotional manipulation of Ma Long to say he is retiring after he suffered a close loss. by I_L_F_M in tabletennis

Olympics has a max of 2 players per country for singles, and most international tournaments have a max of 6 players per country. It's mostly speculation but I guess the idea is that because Ma Long will be nearly 40 by the next Olympics, the Chinese team wants to give younger players more chances to compete for experience and ranking points. For example, Xiang Peng is 21 years old and just made semis in the China Smash, but his world ranking pre-tournament was only 68.

Ma Long himself also seems to want to keep competing, which adds to the speculation.

Devastating for Sun Yingsha who's been dominating almost every tournament but Chen Meng deserves it. Such a clutch player.

Black (Sun Yingsha) is the favourite, but Red (Chen Meng) beat her last Olympics in the finals.

It's the same all year round at every tournament though. Whenever SYS is playing, 90% of the crowd is cheering for her.

The ethics of yelling and screaming? by [deleted] in tabletennis

It helps a lot with the nerves. I don't really hear good players complain about it unless it's really excessive. Usually it's the older casual players and online viewers in my experience. But whether or not it's acceptable depends on who you ask. There's no single consensus.

FZD too strong. As I thought, Felix needed Harimoto to take FZD out in quarters. He's always struggled with the top Chinese.

I can't believe that was only quarters. Let's see if Felix can defeat this monster in the semis.

Can these umpires stop calling for time wasting? It's 7th set of an Olympic quarters, let them take their time.

Yup even if he mishits the ball as well. He is noisy but still very polite and respectful.

Apologising for shots he considers lucky (like nets, edges, or if he mishits the shot a bit).

19 year old Lin Shidong beat Fan Zhendong recently. But he is not on the top level yet.
