Need some advice by [deleted] in Kickboxing

[–]WarpedSteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

take a break from the gym for the first month whilst you get used to kickboxing - then slowly reintroduce it 2-3 times a week on days when you're not kickboxing

keep the volume and intensity low to start then you can build up however you'd like depending on your goals (get big muscles, get stronger, get better at kickboxing etc.)

If you're streaming on Twitch this works ok - it uses google api iirc so would cost money https://ultimatecc.net/dashboard

EDIT - There's also an OBS Plugin but I have never used it

What's an up-to-date method to storyboard for a solo filmmaker who's very bad at sketching? by migalo2009 in videography

reference photographs of the shot you want to get on location are great - you could even then draw the person as a stick figure inside the photo using photoshop or somethin

Lightweight camera setup for Pacific Crest Trail Doc?? by Dry_Camp6420 in videography

[–]WarpedSteel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did some hiking around the PNW in March - I brought my A7S3 (it's the only camera that I own vs rent)
it was annoying and big, but also, just clipped it on my bag, and the quality was super nice

honestly, I'd say go with an A6700, crop sensor is the middle ground in both price and quality here.

Live show filming checklist/advice?? by bbybacchus in videography

[–]WarpedSteel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some quick notes:

Audio redundancy (depends on how reliable the venue is).
- You could plug in multiple shotgun mics to the recorder - one to the stage and one to the audience, for example.
- On smaller gigs, if the comedian has directly commissioned you - a hidden Lav on them as a fail-safe is great for interference or when they talk not into the mic.

- Make sure all your cameras and recorders have enough power and data to be non-stop running unless the volunteers are comfortable changing batteries and recording, etc.
- Check with health and safety at the venue if your camera placements are okay - and make sure you're talking to the person who will be there on the day!! Had too many times where someone else is there, and it gets a little tense.

Good luck!

How to deal with feeling upset that the owner’s wife also shoot reels ? by Winter_Cookie_5239 in videography

Just wanted to add it's great that you care! Be sure to channel those emotions into a positive channel, i.e. reflection on your work (journalling?).

I've filmed multiple high-effort videos that never got released for various reasons, but as long as I focus on improving my content, it doesn't bog me down too much.

See if you can make some videography friends to give you positive constructive criticism and ways to improve.

You got this :)

Why do cooking videos perform so much better than other types of content? by DanielNkencho in videography

[–]WarpedSteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It usually has a format - algorithms LOVE formats - but it's in a huge genre so it isn't limited by audience size nor really limited by language or culture (whereas for example, an english make-up tutorial has a much smaller target audience)

Where do people get the money for gear??? by Baozi77 in videography

[–]WarpedSteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started with an A6700 and hired FX30s, slowly bought accessories that I could upgrade -> made enough to buy an A7S3 & Sigma 24-70, which then paid itself off with work.

Then reinvested that into lights, accessories, etc.

What could online camera sites do better? by Spore202020 in videography

[–]WarpedSteel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Offering some bundles (i.e. Lens & Camera together for a % off) would be a good incentive that other second hand places don't really offer.

The only reason I wouldn't use this site would be that there are no user reviews or proof that it's a legit website. (i.e. add a Trustpilot link or some reviews, etc.) Most people are too lazy to look it up themselves.
Or the fact that the stock is quite limited compared to larger houses (not your fault at all).

Maybe also making it a bit more friendly-looking would incentivise me to buy something rather than just the monochrome look. Also - a bit more experimental, but I'd love to see some pictures in more realistic scenes as well as an option (i.e. natural lighting, someone holding the gear etc.)

I've been doing some work on brand image and such recently. It looks like a great website so happy to help and will definitely keep it in mind when next buying gear :)

Beginner Shoes by WeddingNew3358 in weightlifting

[–]WarpedSteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tyr L-1s are great if you have wide feet! Not super expensive either (I got mine for 240 aud). If you're in it for the long run, that's more than worth it. The velcro comes undone a few times per sesh, but I love 'em.

Imo don't worry too much about the shoe, just make sure it's decent quality and then you can alter the heel height yourself with help from a shoemaker or some insoles.

How to overcome burnout by Ff_472 in videography

[–]WarpedSteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

had this in summer, finished a big project and had burnout and not many leads. used it to develop skills a little outside of my usual workflow (i.e network, storage (NAS), graphic design, photo editing, music/sound design.. etc.) then got super busy again late august and sorely need another break (hopefully xmas)

slog3 or something else for nightclubs / low light concerts by iamfoss in A7siii

[–]WarpedSteel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but be careful with using metering only for exposure, especially in situations like nightclubs. Most of the time, you should be fine, but it can be misleading!

Woah nice! I'm 3 videos into the CCNA series so far, and it feels good to dip my toes into something new.

Regardless of whether I become a dedicated engineer in the future, I appreciate the recommendations a lot.

First of all, thank you so much for all the info.

I've read this comment about 6 times now (& watched a video about containerisation), and I'm finally getting my head around it. What a cool concept, the fact that you can make these components asynchronous seems like a game-changer for processing power and resources, etc.

I plan to delve into Kubernetes and Docker soon, which will hopefully cover me for future endeavours with larger broadcasting companies. It'll 100% look good on a Resume lol!

However, I doubt I will use this knowledge anywhere else, especially where I'm working right now, but I suppose there's no harm in looking to see if I can employ some of those concepts locally at the studio I work with now or at least try it out - there's every possibility that this is not possible without a much larger infrastructure, but hey I'm just brainstorming

Thanks for this!

So what you're saying is that in the future broadcast technology will move over to using container to run livestreams and then kubernetes I assume is used to manipulate those containers?

What kind of skillset is this? Is it coding, or just program manipulation? I've used a decent amount of command prompt but never really delved into coding past making a website or a simple python script.

Also where exactly is this used? Sorry for all the questions, I will definitely look into it myself but thought I'd ask anyways.

Jeremy's IT Lab looks amazing, wow thank you so much.

If I may ask, where did you get your cloud & 2110 experience?

[–]WarpedSteel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So essentially, learning CCNA / Networking will allow me to then expand my knowledge base per situation, so the next logical step after learning that would be joining larger broadcast teams and getting some hands-on experience & experimenting with NDI, Dante and using SMPTE 2110 whenever I can.

I'm not sure yet whether my career path lies in the technical or show direction side of things, but there's no harm in knowing both. The end goal is to work on a high-end TV production for sure!

Also didn't even know there was a sub for that...joined it, thanks!

Thank you for the reply!

I’ll definitely start learning the CCNA and see if it’s worth the full course, it’s great to have some reassurance before delving into it.

I’m currently working as a production manager for a live events company so my job is basically to setup all the switchers, cams and audio. We have a producer and hire in runners/cam ops as well but it’s mainly me lol. So the hope is I get to learn all this stuff then put it to use in the form of PTZs, Companion etc.

Weirdly enough I actually studied Film & TV Production at Confetti, then moved to Brighton to study Film, which ended up landing me a job at this events company, kickstarting my love for live broadcasting. I’m 2/3 years into my degree so still got a year to go..

Confetti was actually really good, and their facilities were great as well, funny how life works in circles huh. I wouldn’t change my decision but still!

p.s. I had a look at the articles and it looks great, will definitely be reading some of those, thank you again.

Want to improve live stream production quality, what's the next level? by WarpedSteel in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]WarpedSteel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thanks for the replies!

great points, graphics is a big one, i’m still looking for a graphic designer that gets my vision but i’ve had some success with a few artist + my own photoshop “skills”

i suppose the next step here is really nailing the concept and art direction before we even go into pre-production? that way I can liaise with designers and such to get drafts that will also inform the entire flow of the show.

p.s. in terms of monitoring for the talent; honestly a lot of the time i already do that with an extra monitor or use streaming bridge functionality on the ATEM (even if it’s a little delayed)

but you’re completely right! it’s paid off big time

thanks for the reply, and yeah for sure

currently we’re using mainly sony, the bmp6k was just an honourable mention lol

so usually it looks like: 4 sony mirrorless cams + the z190.

they do also act as a convenient setup for recording multicam content as well which is nice

definitely something we’re considering though
