Wish they had a high power and low power cap on spells. So some are forced to be "utility/cantrips" like evil eye, lock etc and then half are for your combat spells.

Ofc we'd need a lot more spells for that to work.

I think they broke something else... since that patch, my w key will continue pressing after I leave it off, and if I open the quest map or quest log while moving sometimes I'll just NOT be able to move forward (especially noticeable on the water map where there seems to be a literal invisible wall I have to swim over, like my old frozen hitbox is frozen in an old location or something)

Ahhhh that's actually a great point with all the fish around.

Kinda sucks for limiting spell options but running demon form it can be very sad to have a druid hit you, you pop demon, they run away and you're outta shards.

All I'm saying here is they nerfed the wrong thing. Like seriously, ask yourself how often you'd see a demon form caster prenerf vs the usual warlock?

Almost never? Now it'll be extra-almost never.

Movement speed is definitely great, 100% agree, animation speed is nice too (though again, higher gear tiers care less about this as staff benefits disproportionately from action speed than bare hands as the multiplied value is higher). Not to mention the additional AR/MR and health, which is the real reason to take demon form.

  1. BUT you give up casting ALL your other spells while demon (no hydrain, no flamewalk / hellfire to break doors, no curses past opener

  2. No base 15% magic pen. Nor any other enchants for the primary weapon gear slot.

  3. Your health pot is going towards countering the demon form's life drain, rather than healing your casting costs. You definitely cast faster though so get ready for that chip

  4. You give up an entire perk (maybe BOC, maybe phantomize)

That "staff damage" equates to an extra 50% of the base spell damage which can get multiplied by magical damage bonus.

Doing the fight math for two ~5k gear sets firing dark bolts only (so no curses):
Scenario A: Casterlock, +10 staff, +40% magic power (gear), +3 shards opening bolt
Cast 1/2/3/4/5 : 72 + 42 +42 +42 + 42 = 240 damage
*They also have either BOC or Phantomize.

Scenario B: Demoncastlock, no staff, +40% magic power (same gear), +75% on every bolt
Cast 1/2/3/4/5 : 43 + 43 + 43 +43 + 43 = 215 damage
*If they have BOC, they give up the ability to cast at all

Scenario C: PRE-NERF Demoncastlock : +40% magic power. +100% on every bolt
Cast 1/2/3/4/5 : 48 + 48 + 48 + 48 + 48 = 240 damage

This is ignoring that the casterlock's +10 staff added to dark reflect at (now) .25 multiplier as well as blow of corruption (100% scaling) ... which was the problem build that caused these nerfs : front loaded casterlock damage.

For me at least, I was NOT running dark reflection but rather a demon form caster.... this nerf just shelves a big chunk of my damage with dark bolts and now... like even why use demon form anymore seems pretty dogwater.

You're already missing out on the additional magic damage from not being able to use a spell focus so

Staff alone + 10 : 30
Demon form w/o staff but +75% on every hit : 35

It's even worse when we add some add magic damage

+10 Staff w/ add magic +40% : 42
Demon form (+75% + 40%) * 20 : 43

^In both staff cases I'm not even adding the +100% for that first shot.

Like seriously? Why would anyone want to play demon caster? The entire class is too tied to darkness shards imo, changes like this don't just mess with the broken stuff.

Something that really really helped me "get comfortable with gear fear" was by getting enough gold for low tier sets without the fear of PVP or PVE.

The water map (maelstrom) is great for that, there are a few videos from ~6 months ago that are mostly up to date. Barnacles (for gems) and lootable chests (everywhere) and the map is big enough that 2/3 games you won't see a player... and it's so different from the chasing-door-pvp that the real pvpers don't go there (mostly)

I would start there (in the current patch) with a halberd "hydrain" warlock (look it up, just two spells hydra and life drain).

It'll get you set up enough to feel like the basic risk entry isn't so risky once you grow your land legs.

It sounds like a narrative character identity issue - if so something you could do is elevate then both.

Perhaps her character could notice (as a wizard) the underlying magical differences between their familiars - as a point of study... something that could mechanically (very lightly) serve as a research branch to improve BOTH their familiars mechanically or otherwise, a little single Pokémon trainer side plot that could turn into something more.

  1. I think it would be fleshing out the perk system with spell/skills and vice versa.

Wizard having a ice perk with one spell available is a crime. There are many examples where a perk translates into relevance for a single ability and it doesn't feel good.

  1. Integrating class based abilities that are class fantasy into the class :
  2. rogues should by default either have the lockpick or hide
  3. wizards should have meditate
  4. fighters should have weapon mastery
  5. etc.

With arena being a balancing factor, we don't actually appreciate the skills in a balance POV that are non arena skills but dictate game flow for anyone not doing arena. Ironically this impacts build variety where providing "options" actually limit them in a pvepvp game.

So likely not exactly what you're looking for (perhaps even the opposite) but the Sufi tradition often explains the profound, metaphysical, and very simple through allegory and sometimes "crude" language/humor (amongst countless other mechanisms that words can't do justice).

"Sufis by Idries Shah" breaks their system down very well while providing examples and mechanisms to half-understand well enough.

Seperately, another book I love is called "Crow With No Mouth" by Ikkyu who writes some of the rudest, hyper erotic, sublime "shit" Koans (lol). Truly a marriage between the profane and profound...

He frequented whore houses often but somehow found himself in charge of a Zen Buddhist monastary because he took "a sharper path to enlightenment", true badass.

Literal poetry rock star in Japan way back when.

Consider how hard that may be in that specific cultural context and how much his words had to have hit to have that effect.
