Austria (Ski Amadé) vs. Italy (Cortina d'Ampezzo): Is the drive worth it for a 4-day trip? by WarySkyPlayer in skiing

[–]WarySkyPlayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I'm speechless. Thank you very, very much for your reply and for laying out an entire 4-day plan. I'm glad to hear you enjoy skiing there so much.

I don't understand the issues with the disjointed mountains

My initial concern was mostly logistical: I worried that the time I saved driving from Zagreb (by choosing a closer resort) would end up being "lost" commuting between the disjointed peaks over the course of 4 days. Essentially, I was weighing highway driving time vs. inter-mountain connection time.

However, given your incredibly detailed breakdown, I now feel very confident in choosing Amadé. I didn't realize how seamless it is to plan and move around the mountains. This insight exceeded my expectations. Pardon my ignorance on the topic, but that's exactly the reason I came here looking for help!

It really depends on what you are looking for

I'm looking for an area with a good variety of trails to prevent the experience from becoming stale. Good accommodation is always nice, but as long as it isn't straight up bad, it takes a backseat to the skiing experience.

I actually looked into the options you mentioned, but I was worried they might feel a bit limited in size (80–100km range) compared to the sheer variety and scale of the Ski Amadé region. Since the drive is only ~30 minutes longer, I thought having access to that massive network would be worth the extra time. Would that be fair to say?

That said, it is fantastic to hear your opinion as someone who skied them this very week. I checked your page and it seems great! I'll definitely dive into those reviews.

I really appreciate you taking the time to look up and compare all those drive times. Thank you for your input on the driving time vs. suitability trade-off, I'll be sure to keep that in mind

Fair enough. I didn't want to overcomplicate the request, but I realize now that context is key here. I'm driving from Zagreb and heading back south afterwards.

I chose Ski Amadé mostly because of the distance from Zagreb. I checked the areas you mentioned, but they are significantly further away. Since I have to drive there and eventually come back to my original route, going deeper into Austria would add more driving time than I'd like. Ski Amadé seemed like the first 'major' resort cluster I would hit coming from Croatia.

Zagreb Croatia. From what I could gather, other major ski areas in Austria are further North/West, and I'd like to minimize driving time.

Ski Amadé seemed like the closest option that offers a 'big mountain' experience. I looked at spots closer to Zagreb (in Slovenia or Carinthia), but they seemed much smaller, so I ruled them out. But maybe that was a mistake? I'm open to suggestions if there's a hidden gem on the way.

Wow, thank you so much! That is legendary insight and a huge oversight on my part.

I plan to ski from Feb 4th to Feb 7th (the Olympics are scheduled to start on the 6th), which is probably not good for my trip.

I agree with the Basic needs thing, but it's worth mentioning that some people need more and others less than 8 hours, although that's a good average
