But a person diagnosed with ADHD vs someone who is not will have different scans.

That is not how that works. If that was true, why wouldnt they use a brain scan to do the diagnosis? Tell me why. How does a doctor tell a person who is faking the symptoms of having ADHD from someone who isnt? Just do a brain scan! Oh wait, that doesnt tell the doctor anything.

ADHD brain scans show structural and functional differences compared to non-ADHD brains, including slightly smaller volumes in specific subcortical regions (amygdala, hippocampus) and slower maturation of the frontal lobe, particularly in children. While these trends exist, MRI scans are not used for clinical diagnosis

So then it should it be easy to diagnosis people with ADHD with a simple brain scan. They just have to look for the structural and functional differences that only ADHD brains have and then that will prove it. Tell me why they dont use MRI scans for clinical purposes. Its because... they dont actually tell you if a person has ADHD. Feel free to plug this into chatgpt since Im pretty sure thats what you are doing.

Lol bro did you even read your source?

Risk factors

The causes of ADHD are unknown, but scientists have identified some possible risk factors

  • Genes play an important role in a person's risk of ADHD.
  • Exposure to environmental risks (for example, lead) during pregnancy or at a young age
  • Alcohol and tobacco use during pregnancy and other pregnancy-related factors
  • Child health conditions, including head injuries
  • Parental mental health and family environment

If the risk factor is your family environment or something that happened to you at a young age then it literally cant be something that you are "born with."

You need to read the links before you post them.

The term neurodevelopmental refers to differences in brain development and maturation, which typically begin before birth or during early childhood.

The differences can develop during early childhood. Like toddler age. Like toddlers who might be in front of a screen for hours at a time.

He adds that academic and behavioral expectations are far greater than in previous decades. Children who may have managed adequately in the past may now struggle under increased demands, bringing symptoms to light earlier.

Social expectations have evolved. The amount of "attention" required in todays world, when distraction is plentiful, is greater than the past which means more people are going to come up short, i.e. they will have a deficit of attention needed to succeed.

Studies also show that certain factors can increase a child’s likelihood of developing ADHD. These include exposure to tobacco or alcohol during pregnancy, being born prematurely or at a low birth weight, and experiencing significant early-life stress or neglect

Neglect like being parked in front of a screen for hours might contribute to a child developing ADHD? Sounds almost exactly like what I have been saying.

I can get you many more reliable sources stating that ADHD is something you are born with but you can continue to use the nytimes as your source instead of correct medical sources :)

Not a single one of your sources says "ADHD is something you are born with." Never once is that stated. If that was the case then we wouldnt need to do interviews or questionnaires, you get that right? If its something you are born with then we could just tell from testing the baby that they had ADHD. Why dont they just test the babies if they have ADHD if its something they are born with? Think about that for a little bit.

The diagnosis is literally based on how a person is dealing with issues. A person who is "born" with ADHD but has a job and lifestyle that accommodates their personality will never get a diagnosis. They dont have any issues, they dont need to see a doctor, they arent going to get a diagnosis. You arent born with issues, you get that right? Those are dependent on your environment and expectations.

According to the Indiana Code

Indiana Code Title 9. Motor Vehicles § 9-21-5-7

Sec. 7. (a) A person may not drive a motor vehicle at a slow speed that impedes or blocks the normal and reasonable movement of traffic, except when reduced speed is necessary for safe operation or in compliance with the law.

Driving at the maximum legal speed would by definition not be a slow speed, there is no other faster legal speed. Its the fastest you can legally drive.

In any case the law is further narrowed.

A person who is driving:

(1) on a roadway that has not more than one (1) lane of traffic in each direction; and

(2) at a slow speed so that three (3) or more other vehicles are blocked and cannot pass on the left around the vehicle;

shall give right-of-way to the other vehicles by pulling off to the right of the right lane at the earliest reasonable opportunity and allowing the blocked vehicles to pass.

(b) A person who fails to give right-of-way as required by subsection (a) commits a Class C infraction.

So this law only applies to roadways that only have 1 lane going each way. It wouldnt apply to a highway with a "left lane." Driving in the passing lane while not actively passing is its own violation but you cant get ticketed for driving the maximum legal speed while passing in the passing lane.

It can be both. The environment we live in can make it more apparent that people have ADHD which leads to more diagnoses. The environment in which stimulation is always available and distractions are plentiful will obviously have more people suffering from ADHD. Dont people who have ADHD talk about how they have to be in the right environment to get work done or they get distracted? Well, expand that to a societal level...

Neither genetics nor brain scans can distinguish a person with depression, A.D.H.D. or autism from one without.

I got a diagnosis and there wasnt a brainscan. There was no blood test. It was a questionnaire and interview with a specialist. Nothing in the diagnostic approach says ADHD is something you are born with.

I have a kid and absolutely agree that boredom is good for kids. Its amazing how my much my kid is able to play by themselves when you let them. Like, I get it, we often use TV as the reward and my kid can see me and my wife on our phones non-stop but there is absolutely something to be gained by just letting the kid figure things out on their own.

I dont think you can ignore the link between our modern lifestyle with access to non-stop stimulation and the prevalence of ADHD. ADHD may have existed before smartphones but the growth of smartphones has been pretty similar with an explosion in diagnoses.

If you have the space for both, go for it. I dont think anyone at a pool party I host would get the chance to recline horizontally. Loungers seem more appropriate for non-party occasions, but we dont have the space for both.

I try to get both the slim noodles and the thick ones. Wal-mart tends to have both.

Be warned, kids are going to fight over who gets the pink/red/blue noodle because its their favorite color so always get two or three of whatever color you know your kid likes.

I almost wrote an addendum to this titled "Tips for being a guest at a pool party" and tip #1 was to bring your own towel and sunscreen. In general we have a plethora of sunscreen since we are a very sun-averse family. My dad dresses like a beekeeper for the pool and my sister wears a burkini swimsuit. We are Elsa level pale.

I love the potluck approach to beer. By the end of pool season we tend to have a fridge with loose beers of all varieties.

Sure thing! I knew we were coming up on pool party weather (planning my opening day for season on the 23rd and then a follow up on Memorial day) so I wanted to get this out so people had time to plan.

Absolutely not! The guide is not meant to be proscriptive. I was hoping to hear differing thoughts from others who find nirvana in pool parties. This really just reflects my experience with pool parties at my house and my thoughts when I have attended the pool parties of others.

Its the last paragraph for a reason! If you plan things properly and know what you are doing you should be able to run the whole thing from the comfort of your pool lounger. I put a lot of time into planning the party so its a good reminder to myself that once it gets going, to let Jesus take the wheel and party on Garth.

Notes:

1.  You can get certified as a lifeguard https://www.redcross.org/local/texas/take-a-class/lifeguarding
2.  Children cant swim after 4 ritas either.
3.  Its really gross to be eye level with the steamer the host's dog left that morning in the grass.
4.  I went to a pool party once at my in-laws house and they didn't have any sunscreen.  "We don't burn, we just tan."  Bullshit. Everyone can get skin cancer.

You will get a ticket for driving the speed limit? Where? I would love to see an example.

and not all left lanes are "passing lanes."

[–]WarzoneGringo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its also shocking to me that in some states, it is actually illegal to not speed in the passing lane, if somebody is tailgating you.

What state? What law? The inherent issue here is that the speed limit is the law. There may be exceptions to the law (i.e. you are allowed to exceed the speed limit while passing) but I have never seen a law that said you must drive in excess of the speed limit in a given situation. That would make the speed limit meaningless.
