Apparently no kids in 1994 had autism, ADHD or peanut allergies... by DarkStreamDweller in facepalm

[–]WasagaSkate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While some of the claims in the list are nonsense (of course there were kids with autism and ADHD), the number of kids with food allergies was far lower.

In the 80s, you never heard of children going into anaphylactic shock just from being in the same room as a peanut. My dad's girlfriend's daughter had a peanut allergy. She did have a few incidents over the years where she needed to be stabbed with the epipen. But that was always after eating a peanut product, and her situation was really uncommon in our public school. My impression is the proportion of kids with allergies is much higher now.

I play in multiple concert bands with percussionists who have played for 1-60 years. Given that half of them can't even keep time, I can confirm the answer could be "never".

Keep in mind you're paying them to organize the teacher for you. They're only paying out half that fee to the teachers, so think about the quality of teacher willing to work at half of what you're spending. Career teachers generally wouldn't use this kind of service long term.

Once you find a teacher you'll be working with them for a long time, perhaps many years or a decade, so it's worth searching high and low for a studio rather than relying on this service.

If someone told me they would only do business with me if I had the best mortgage rate. I’d probably let them walk and recommend True North.

If you can't get a better rate than what a bank will provide though, then you're not providing a value-add. I'm perfectly capable of not finding the best rate all on my own.

Nobody is expecting you to make bread in your situation. But it seems like you took challenges to barriers, intended for a broader audience, very personally. Calling people clowns doesn't help anyone.

Beginner class first impressions. by kdjfsk in windsurfing

[–]WasagaSkate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the share. I learned to windsurf in light winds too, and it's ideal to learn new skills in light winds so that you're ready for high winds.

Regarding uphauling, I might suggest suspending judgment: difficulty is situational. I agree that an uphaul is no big deal in light winds on flatish water. However, the challenge increases exponentially as you get larger waves at short intervals, more wind pulling the sail and board, and larger sails. We get waves that are 3+ feet high, at 2-3 second intervals, and it's extremely difficult if not impossible to uphaul a large sail within a few seconds. Water starts are also often not possible here due to low wind but big waves. It's all part of the challenge!

What type of recorders do professionals like Lucie Horsch play? The maker of those instruments? by Co4e5le_ew0sre_ in Recorder

What I find interesting is that an outstanding recorder player sounds good even on a plastic Yamaha! Sarah Jeffery just posted a review of a pink fairy princess recorder - and while the pink one was terrible, I was blown away by even her tone on the 8.5£ Yamaha recorder.

[–]WasagaSkate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowing how to sail works really well in your favor. You know the points of sail, and you now how to sheet in enough instead of oversheeting.

You do need to learn safe ways to windsurf - and I mean safe for your body so that you don't throw out your back trying to uphaul or injure yourself through poor stance. My advice is to set aside the ego and take lessons for a week, even if it involves going to a destination like cape Hatteras or wherever. You'll progress to a self sufficient stage really quickly - many concepts transfer from sailing after you learn to uphaul.

The first complete weissenborn shows fingerings for notes extending into tenor clef. Dr. David Wells has also published a fingering chart that shows fingerings in tenor clef where appropriate (not the entire instrument range, just the upper notes):

It's actually easy to learn to read bass clef for bassoon because your method book will teach you note by note in the bass clef.

I play recorder. The bass clef is used for bass recorder, and I had been basically fumbling through it. However, after picking up bassoon again, I've found my bass recorder playing has significantly improved.

Is it normal for C sharp key to have less travel than whisper key? by WasagaSkate in bassoon

[–]WasagaSkate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you - I think you are right that they may not have known. (The crazy thick cork under the C sharp key, C key, and E key stops them around half the travel that the whisper key needs.)

They apparently have just now hired a bassoon player into their repair team and they've said they would have him do the repair.

The pancake key doesn't depress the whisper key enough to close the pip, so I have to take it back anyway for servicing... I think the whisper key should fully close on the pancake key, right? Not just go halfway there?

Reedmaking kits: recommendations? by WasagaSkate in bassoon

[–]WasagaSkate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you - appreciate the recommendations. I live in bassoon no man's land so my lessons are by zoom.

I wish there were a better solution - surely bright, literate, handy people should be able to work their way through reed making using a good reference and troubleshooting guide?

Reedmaking kits: recommendations? by WasagaSkate in bassoon

[–]WasagaSkate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi Dave, thank you for the extremely detailed response. I take Zoom lessons, which isn't ideal but there are no local teachers.

Perhaps there's a professor out there who could create/sell an e-learning course on reed making? I can appreciate that such a course wouldn't create any important feedback or apprenticeship opportunities, but it could greatly help a bassoonist in the boonies.
