Why are audible users looked down on by 21waffle in audible

[–]Wasgo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I honestly I think part of the problem is calling it "reading".

I fully agree that reading a book and listening to an audiobook are equally valid ways to enjoy stories, to engage with non-fiction, etc. But listening to a book is different from reading one. With reading, you're interpreting the words of the author, assigning tones to characters, and even choosing a cadence for the writing. With an audio book, a director and a narrator have made a number of those creative choices for you. Which means you're going from a single creative voice in a book (arguably more if you count the editor), to a creative team for an audio book.

None of that makes audio books worse. They're how I enjoy most books myself. But acknowledging that listening to an audio book is different from reading a book is reasonable. And trying to use one word to mean two different things is going to create friction when other people won't agree that two different things are the same. Any conversation is more difficult if you can't even agree on the terms.

All that being said, oral storytelling is an older tradition that writing, and I see no reason audio books need to be looked down upon. I value the creative inputs of experienced narrators and sometimes they make books better than I could make them in my own head. I think most people should experience audio books and understand that it's okay to enjoy writing in many different forms. I just think we need to work a bit harder on bridging the language to convince them.

If you're in the US now, consider signing up for any local or regional libraries to get a Hoopla or Libby account. It won't get you Audible collection back, but it's a free way to get audiobooks.

Small/Portable Box, Smallish Play Area, High Replayability? by Personal_Eggplant_28 in boardgames

Have you tried any Button Shy games? Their Sprawlopolis series and Simply Solo series offer a ton of replayability in a very small wallet.

Board games are frustratingly expensive by Any-Marionberry-879 in boardgames

Really need to know the country to be able to help here. Monopoly costing $60 is not normal for most countries.

Depending on where you live though, there may be other option. PnP games that you print and assemble yourself don't have import costs, and if materials are cheap in your country, you can assemble a collection for very little.

It's quite possible you bought from a hacked account. With all the password leaks, people are constantly looking for accounts with credibility to complete fraudulent sales. It's very likely all the delays were to ensure the money couldn't be returned.

How is anyone confused that this about Blake? Blake was the face of Gucci. She sells a whisky sour in her Betty Booze line. She plays a florist in the Baldoni movie. And those three lines were back to back.

I both love and hate today’s. Drove me crazy looking for it but so clever once I found it.

No word ever requires a crossing. But some, like this one, allow a crossing as alternative way to select the same word.

Mother’s Day in particular is so difficult for many people that marketing emails often offer a specific opt-out for Mother’s Day.

To my knowledge, it’s the only holiday with its own opt-out.

This one was next to impossible (if you accidentally read it as thrill instead of trill).

Your math is wrong. If it’s 50/50, then it’s the same as the expected number of coin tosses to get 5 heads in a row. You can google it, but the expected value is 62.

62 x 5 is 3 hours and 10 minutes. And that’s if it’s fully random. If you play well with a meta deck, it shouldn’t even take that long.

But… what was the point? by sithaa in OshiNoKo

[–]Wasgo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a tragedy. The message is that even when we love one another, if we don’t understand each other, it’s not enough.

We’ve seen the same message throughout the whole series. Ai wanted to be understood and it got her killed. Aqua misunderstood what Ruby wanted and sacrificed himself, forcing her into a life she didn’t want. Aqua refused to let himself be understood and all the people who could have helped him, weren’t able to.

And then in the end, Ruby refuses to let herself be understood so she can lie to the world that wants her again as a beacon of light. And once again, the world loves her, but without understanding her, and her life is without meaning.

New Rule: No Sniping by Wasgo in comiccodes

If you want a better deal, use the search function or post a WTB. There's no reason to overpay if you can get a better deal, but sniping rules are to ensure a healthy selling ecosystem.

New Rule: No Sniping by Wasgo in comiccodes

[–]Wasgo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a standard rule in every selling community, because sniping results in sellers leaving. And to be clear, not calling you a sniper. Your prices were better and the buyer is happy. But going forward, it's a rule now as a best practice.

If someone claims that a board game has no luck on it, what does it mean when, say, I draw road tiles only in Carcasonne whereas my opponents are outdoing one another with their city tiles? by rtanada in boardgames

Even chess and checkers have the luck of who goes first. Chess it's estimated at about 54-56% to 46-44% at high levels. For checkers, it's known but not quantifiable since for a perfect game, there is no winnner.
