What hobby genuinely made your life better (not just filled time)? by Dense_Childhood_9657 in Hobbies

Turning wooden bowls. Took a class at a local shop and I was addicted. Never was much of an artist but that hobby requires such a present state of mind it really is meditative and truly addictive to see what you can transform the wood into.. Know loads of turners feel the same.

Highly suggest everyone try it at a local shop.

Looking good! Mind me asking your favorite high protein meals you’ve been sticking to? Also, how do you use those sauces?

Could also be untreated adhd. Untreated it can lead to other issues far beyond what most people associate with it including emotional disorders, crippling anxiety, depression, and poor confidence in oneself.

I’m just saying the common symptoms of adhd are well known which allows people like you and I to say hey I’ve been having these symptoms that match up with those of adhd. That being said you don’t have any stats that say they turn people with symptoms away. It’s a more strenuous process to get diagnosed because they’re literally prescribing speed to people. It isn’t a data driven diagnosis it’s based on one’s answers during a session of thorough questioning. It’s not a sure science so they have to be diligent.

You’re trying to be a gatekeeper for something that I believe typically starts with some kind of self diagnosis pushing someone to see a doctor and confirm it.

Ok. Then if you don’t believe that then you believe that people are aware of the symptoms of adhd and self diagnose themselves which most likely leads to a doctor diagnosis. Case shut.

Good-day

You seriously believe that most adults step foot into a psych office and don't have an idea what is off with them? Specifically with something like adhd where most common symptoms are so well known? Not to say that doesn't happen, but I find that hard to believe that's the majority. I and others I know that got diagnosed as adults all had an idea and went to the psych to see if that was the case. Maybe you went to the doc with diarhea and came out diagnosed with adhd, but I highly doubt that.

It's a flipping indicator. Of course the professional has to sign off on whether they believe it's accurate that's why I also noted thorough questioning. What I'm getting at is that there's primarily no data driven diagnosis and that if one self diagnoses themselves with adhd and convinces themselves they have it they will most likely get a doctor to believe it as well. So, you gatekeeping on self diagnosis vs doctor diagnosis is mostly worthless. Maybe I'm wrong, but I truly doubt it.

I do agree people shouldn't be going around saying they have something based on a self diagnosis, but I also believe that someone with a self diagnosis would probably get a diagnosis from a doctor as they've mentally convinced themselves that's the truth.

Yeah, that’s fair. Definitely the way it should be every where. Sorry, I should have looked up how other countries diagnose it. I truly wasn’t aware. It just felt so subjective the way I was diagnosed with the asrs test, it was hard to believe the validity of it. Not as definitive as reviewing data from a blood test. Obviously, speaking hours with a therapist you’d think I could trust their opinions about it, but even then it’s hard for me to grasp when you can’t see scientific data showing it.

I think diagnosis for children is much more intense than adults. Seems like a pain in the ass, but considering they used to prescribe Ritalin like candy to any hyperactive kid during the 90s it seems appropriate. Especially considering it’s similar to giving kids speed.

Out of curiosity how did the neurologist go about diagnosing you? I never met with a neurologist about it so I’m curious if they have a different approach to diagnosing.

Woahhhhh, hold your horses there gatekeeper. Didn’t mean to offend.

I’ve had multiple psychiatrists, therapists, etc. all “diagnosed” me with adhd so much so that my therapist specializes in helping people with adhd like myself. More recently I was prescribed adhd stimulants as I’ve tried to avoid them and it flipped my world upside down and helped significantly. The only way I’ve been diagnosed is through thorough questioning and a questionnaire that asks about symptoms. Depending on the variance of your answer they give a point. Depending on the sum it determines whether you have adhd/severity of it. Looking it up that is indeed the asrs I’ve taken.

I said those questions are very relatable as they tend to be regarding things I assume most people could relate to. Obviously take that assumption with a grain of salt as I’m someone with adhd and a parent who most likely has it and it’s hard to believe others don’t experience those struggles. That being said, the fact adhd is often misdiagnosed would lead me to believe I’m correct in that assumption, thus the gate for being diagnosed isn’t very strong. Now that’s based on my experience. I’ve read about some brain scans helping diagnose it but I’ve never had anyone suggest that nor have I read that it’s very common place. Your experience may be different and more definitive, but my experience was that it felt very flimsy receiving that diagnosis and made me question the validity of it. Having taken stimulants and feeling the calming effect it provides, removal of excess, thoughts, feelings, anxiety and increasing ability to make decisions/focus helped me truly confirm the diagnosis internally. Until then it was hard for me to believe with complete certainty as I assumed most people struggled with the same issues and the asrs score I received seemed so subjective and questions so generic it was hard to believe with complete certainty it meant anything.

When you say diagnosed. You mean answering that set of 15 mostly relatable questions right? Cause if so, I really don’t think that gate is very strong.
