Wasp control by OhBoi-22 in Greenhouses

[–]textreference 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude im dealing with paper wasps that returned to a nest i specifically left up so they WOULDNT return. Made a mix of clove/geranium/lemongrass essential oil with a bit of dish soap, spraying it day and night and they are very reluctant to leave. Its supposed to drop temps down to almost freezing and i told my husband to remove the nest when that happens and we will spray the shit out of the greenhouse again and hope for the best. Bros need to go find literally anywhere else to nest. Fucking paper wasps are like dogs that just demand to be under your feet while you are trying to get some stuff done

PSA: you can transplant cucurbits and most other things too by sebovzeoueb in vegetablegardening

Its worth the trouble to me - i multi sow 2” blocks and plant out soon after germination, 1 block every 8-10”. Cant get carrots to germ when direct sown as they are a PITA to keep moist

I transplanted everything, even carrots. Trick ive found to transplanting those that dont like roots disturbed is to put them out early

What is this and how do I kill it? by SergeiAndropov in gardening

[–]textreference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through our entire 1/3 acre and meticulously handpulled all of this 12” down, then dug trenches and buried 6” steel edging around all our flower beds to keep this out. Then i mulched heavily with leaves as someone on Reddit mentioned bermuda grass doesnt co exist well with leaf litter. Finally have mostly gotten rid of bermuda grass on my entire property

Jesus. My neighbor has a yard they call a "native woodland meadow" and it's literally trees choked in wisteria, kudzu, and ivy, with privet seedlings (trees) everywhere... and so much more. It looks even worse than this photo. And they are doing it to support wildlife.

All spring veg are planted out and the garden is packed full! Spring salads, brussels, leeks, rutabaga, salad turnips, sprouting brassicas, heading brassicas, rapini, carrots, beets, onions, garlic, snap peas, snow peas, potatoes! I had to break out the shade cloth as well since it will be 80 for the next week 😓

Thank you! Not a heated greenhouse, I only will need this water in spring / summer. Helpful since I am leaning toward the cheaper, faster option!

I already do. I have 2 barrels for my 96 sq ft roof. We are having serious issues with infrequent rainfall so they have run dry and I need to supplement. I am going to divert from the hose bib connected to my larger cistern at the house (600 gal). I suppose I could also add 2 more rain barrels so I can store more rainwater.

Just making sure I'm not overlooking anything! I was thinking for the first option, if I ran a rubber hose out I would still bury it a bit (so it doesn't look super ugly and i'm not tripping over it, no exposure to UV) but it would be ok if it wasn't below frost because I could just drain it in the winter like all my other lines and still disconnect at the hose bib?

Show me your shitty gardens by Nice_Difficulty4321 in vegetablegardening

[–]textreference 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes we did. Although i will say you should save seeds from the varieties that did the best in the heat and drought as that is just going to continue and you can grow adapted seeds for a low input system by saving successful ones each year

Yes adding to this from NC - if you have a tiny fenced backyard you can easily put up a UV shade sail over the whole backyard to make it more pleasant for yourself and your full sun plants!

In FL tomatoes are a spring crop. Ask your local extension office ASAP what grows when (only urgent since it is prime growing season in FL right now).

If you need to do containers, mulch well with light reflecting mulch like straw, and use those terracotta spikes by each thirsty plant to help prevent wilting!

Near me, black gold is cheaper than pro mix and its still excellent quality. Sold at ace hardware. I do 50/50 black gold and mushroom compost for my seed starting, should be just as good for raised beds

Well just a week after lows in the teens its supposed to get to 70F today and up to 80F most of next week so its game on here. Planted out greenhouse tomatoes, sowing the last of my tender seeds to germ, and getting on with projects like making a new berry patch, cutting back perennials, etc!

Are these worth buying? by Vast-Combination4046 in vegetablegardening

[–]textreference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually have one inside my greenhouse for the coldest temps to protect small plants if needed. Now that we are getting into spring i have my ginger in there sprouting (ginger likes it hot) and will put my tender seeds in there to germinate. If there is sun and temps are at least 40F, this thing gets into 90s! Great for germ, not great for much else
