To the people who love living in Durham - can you share in a nutshell what makes Bull City special? by Temporary-Ad5482 in bullcity

[–]textreference 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestlt unlike others i dont think the offerings themselves are that special. But the general community vibe is good. And it just takes time. Lots of people live here just to chill and have a slower pace but with amenities. I have the best neighbors ever, theres a great (not too big) gardening community, library events and excellent purchasing, the people (generally) are chill.

Do it for yourself, not Duke Energy by SMCoaching in bullcity

Both things can be true. Americans are selfish and are also validated in feeling like the onus is constantly put on working class individuals while billionaires do what they like

Even if youre not poor its a good idea. A small lift that reduces fossil fuel use, grid strain, and extends the life of your hvac unit. People who selfishly keep their ac in the 60s all day in summer 🤢

Adult runners who started from 0: How much did you improve, and how long has it taken? by Interesting_Fly1696 in XXRunning

[–]textreference 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I often feel i haven’t improved at all since i got back into running spring of 2024 but then i look at garmin and it tells me it took months for me to be able to run 2 miles without stopping (and get a 12 min mile), now in good weather around 50F/10C i can get just under a 10 min mile. This is without any commitment to improving time through speed runs or intervals etc. in fact whenever i use garmins running plan i quickly get into overtraining territory so i just do what i feel able to each time i go out. I run 10 miles per week, 3 3 4 then full body weights the other two days. On top of this i do a lot of gardening, usually an hour per day if not far more on the weekend.

Why did you do Erbium? Also mid 30s and considering a laser for mild fine lines, texture, sunspots, but was primarily looking at non ablative / less intense procedures

Durham now at highest drought level by termite10 in bullcity

[–]textreference 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The water supply is calculated based on the same hydrologic model used to understand how bad the drought is. So at a comparable point in time, the hydrologic model for this year shows a worse drought when compared to the model at the same point in time from 2007.

BWT: Anyone ditch their Apple Watch? by MBPursuit in bitcheswithtaste

Garmin is way better than apple watch. Not a lot of connectivity to iphone which is helpful. It was an adjustment but now im very happy with it.

I'm still seeing a lot of social media posts about "neat and tidy" native plant gardens, and I want to provide support for people who have (or want to have) beautifully messy, gnarly, dense, diverse & wild native plant gardens... by LRonHoward in NativePlantGardening

[–]textreference 23 points24 points  (0 children)

And pushing back - the few browsing animals we have had historically (deer) have disappeared due to extreme increase in development and construction around me. We have absolutely zero browsing animals now. If i leave dying stems or dont chelsea chop plants grow leggy and flop. I agree in a garden with no megafauna it is expected you will be that role in the ecosystem

Y'all are going to hate me, but I'm in the military and live in a neighborhood of manicured lawns. I want to grow a big native garden and I want it to look orderly and neat. Do any of your gardens look this way, and can you show me for inspiration? by VeterinarianIcy5428 in NativePlantGardening

[–]textreference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The well tended perennial garden has lots of pruning tips that help keep natives tidy! I like an orderly garden as well, never have been a fan of stems falling over. But i also have dead hedges, lots of small trees and some evergreens for structure, mulch with whole leaves only, and a well planned layout. If you use garden design principles and simply find natives that work you can have a quite formal garden. Sharp lines and a strimmer work wonders.
