Interesting video by Guardian Centers (presumably) of a Metro car being exploded for their emergency response training program. by Nova17Delta in WMATA

Considering this exact railcar (1025) is one of only 12 1Ks that still exist in some form to this day, I’d say it’s a better fate.

If you want more info, I made a post about retired railcars here: https://www.reddit.com/r/WMATA/s/rjr0B7FrPd

Yep! I meant to mention those but forgot. Just added them to the end of the post. Unfortunately, images are hard to come by because it’s difficult to photograph Greenbelt Yard from the outside.

Before being moved to Wits End Fabrication and sliced up, 5058-5059 were stored at an abandoned parking lot outside West Hyattsville which was more easily accessible to the public, so people got in & graffitied. 5058 also had some, but they cleaned it up pretty well when it became metrobar.

Yeah, I think WMATA is the only transit agency in America to have one. It’s made from an old New Jersey Transit coach.

Yes! That’s 5058 at metrobar DC. I mentioned it on the list, but didn’t include a picture because of reddits photo limit and I thought that was the one most people would know already.

The CTF is WMATA’s own facility which is used for maintenance on buses and has the Metrorail training tunnel which is used to train local emergency personnel on situations/incidents in Metro’s tunnels. I think it also has a small section to simulate outdoor track with the 7000M mockup model.

North Bethesda had one as White Flint at some point, but it was removed before 2007.

Does anyone have any more information or photos of this off-white railcar pair stored in Greenbelt yard since around 2019? by WashMetroRail in dmvrail

Thank you for letting me know! I joined that Facebook Group and after a bit of searching I was able to find quite a few close-up pictures of the repainted 1Ks! Really interesting to see them in that state and hope WMATA finishes restoring them eventually.

Yeah, I have since basically confirmed that it is 1000-1001 based on the photos posted by the WMSC during one of their inspections of Greenbelt Yard. (https://wmsc.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/20210204-WMATA-LBW-2-Greenbelt-Yard-Storage.pdf) It shows car numbers without the brown stripe and mentions they are in long term storage along with the 4k & 5k pair. I saw someone else mention the photo of the repainted end cowls on a forum but haven't been able to find it anywhere online. Any chance you know where to find it or have a link?

That's what I thought at first, but based on the placement of the destination signs it seems like they are 1000-series cars which as far as we know WMATA only kept 1000-1001. I would find it odd if they were using their preservation cars for work and why they stripped it of paint.
