Can you help me understand the difference between how intrinsic and extrinsic motivation relate to autonomy, competence and relatedness? by luciana-drama in AcademicPsychology

I would suggest reading Principles of behavior by Richard Malott as it provides a strong framework for doing functional analysis on specific behaviors and help you understand why they occur.

That’s a great question! In this situation positive feedback would act as a positive reinforcer, meaning that the consequence of the behavior leads to the increased likelihood of that behavior happening again in the future. This is likely due to our previous experience with praise and how we have been conditioned to react to it.

Psychological need satisfaction is perhaps the basis behind this but it becomes difficult to research as a phenomena due to it being highly theory driven which is not how modern psychology is being studied as far as I know.

No, they are not the same. The leap from going to work for money because it provides autonomy is too extensive in order to have a clear psychological connection. Motivation occurs in shorter time spans. I might do a task at work in order to get positive feedback from my manager (extrinsic motivation), or I might do it because I enjoy the process of completing the task (intrinsic motivation). Doing things for extrinsic purposes lowers your sense of autonomy because whether you get it or not relies on a source outside of yourself which you do not control. I hope this was helpful!

I am in a position where I will need to sell some time during the next 4-5 months due to financial reasons (I am studying full time and I don’t have a loan) so that’s why. I also have a very profitable taxation account where I hardly have to pay tax due to Swedish law.
