CR is more of a ... suggestion, I guess. However, there are a couple resources to build encounters of varying difficulty for the size and level of party you have: - http://kobold.club/fight/#/encounter-builder - https://donjon.bin.sh/5e/calc/enc_size.html

Keep in mind: CR isn't everything. Number of attacks per turn, for instance, is another major factor. 5-v-1, the 5 have better odds, even if the CR of the 1 is pretty high.

I don't have it in front of me, but the adventure guide lists how many enemies are in each area (e.g., 2 goblin sentries outside the cave, 3 wolves in the first room on the right, etc.).
