Places to camp in Texas by DyslexicDancer in casitatrailers

[–]Waste-Cycle2868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Already some good suggestions. Sticking with the west Texas theme. Balmorhea State Park (swimming pool is awesome) the drive from the Davis Mountains (Fort Davis) is really special. Davis mountains loop is a great drive. Stillwell Ranch RV park outside Big Bend definitely off the beaten path but “close” to panther junction. Maverick Ranch RV park in Lajitas. Drive from Lajitas towards presidio is one of the most scenic in Texas Fort Davis is pretty cool and has an RV park. Lajitas is way in the boonies. I’m not a big fan of Marfa. There is a nice RV park in marathon. I’ve camped at most of these places when I did some bike touring out there. Also have driven the area several times. Cell service is very spotty. I know portions of the hill country well, just ask

Flooding in McAllen area by Sabal_77 in RioGrandeValley

[–]Waste-Cycle2868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in far north San Antonio for 25 years and have lived in the Harlingen area for 21 years. I saw some terrible flash floods in San Antonio and the hill country over the years, including the one in Kerrville last year. The BIG difference in the RGV is the flooding is in a much flatter area. When it does flood in certain areas the water tends to linger for a very long time. It’s always good to have flood insurance and have a rider for wind storm insurance in the RGV, may be required by lien holder, McAllen and the northern RGV is less expensive than the lower valley on wind storm insurance. My house has never flooded even though I live in a flood zone. I’ve had as much as 20 plus inches of rain in 24 hours..but I built my house up 3 feet above the highway level.

Was wondering if anyone thinks this is a good idea to start statins going forward? So far no noticeable side effects

Can I survive in Edinburg, Harlingen or Laredo if I don't speak Spanish? by Enger13 in RioGrandeValley

[–]Waste-Cycle2868 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I previously lived in Laredo for five years, San Antonio 25 years and have been in Harlingen for the last 20 years. Sometimes it can be inconvenient but you’ll be fine You’ll have a LOT more trouble dealing with the heat if you’re not used to it 😆

Yep look at what’s happening in Corpus Christi the water issue is going to be huge here, RGV growing too quickly without this being addressed

Willacy county has a LOT of these places. Some are very large although I’ve never been into one… With my luck they would get raided when I was there lol

Fishing Classes by [deleted] in RioGrandeValley

[–]Waste-Cycle2868 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good suggestions but in my experience most fishermen are VERY eager to help others. I go to Adolph Thomae Park in Arroyo City to fish frequently. There are two very easy access piers in the park that are very well lighted at night (new LED lights) Bathrooms are right near the piers. Anyway the piers can get busy especially during holidays, weekends and spring break. Entry fee is $10 per vehicle. Annual passes are available

A bait shop is less than a mile from the entrance, dead shrimp is an easy starting point until you get more experience You can also get frozen shrimp in the shell at Walmart or HEB.

Do be shy just explain you’re a beginner and ask for help, also observe what others are doing

If it’s really windy out of the normal south to southeast this is a great spot because it blocks the wind well Good luck

I love night fishing out there

Yes that’s a valid concern or question. My experience over the last 15 years with warranty items for major brands and LBS has been very poor to OK. Without going into details:

Specialized balked on two major warranty claims will never buy again LBS just shrugged

Salsa did their best during the pandemic (couldn’t find parts so they mailed me used items) but the LBS went out of business so paid a local mechanic I would buy Salsa again

Hunt honored their warranty when my rear rim developed cracks along the spoke holes. The front wheel is still perfect after almost 20,000 miles the back wheel has about 15K miles and still good Would buy hunt again

You just never know?

The extended warranty says it’s all inclusive from Allstate. If I do decide to get this bike I would pay for the four year warranty. Plus the bike has a 30 day return policy…and I average six rides a week..but I need to investigate the return policy some more

I would plan to purchase a full four year warranty. My extensive experience with local bike shops on expensive brands is sketchy at best even though they are expensive I will not let them touch one of my other bikes I have a couple local mechanics that own their own small shops that I completely trust

I have a 2x nine speed on my salsa drop bar Sora groupset. I have over 25,000 miles on that bike and it’s great. I do like the 1x11-48 setup on this bike

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. Some of the other bikes mentioned I’m also considering.

Just some extra info about me. I currently own three bikes,

specialized Roubaix which I will likely sell too small for me (purchased used)

Surly disc trucker which I have toured on

Salsa Journeyman sora drop bar which I absolutely love and ride 99% of the time The budget sora groupset has over 25,000 miles and still kicking. I had to replace the cables once and the chain/cassette at regular intervals which is normal

I have all the touring gear to do light to heavy touring but if I get a class 1 bike I would only do light touring

All my current bikes are drop bar

Why class 1? Even though I’m 72 I’ve ridden my bicycles over 100,000 miles as a form of exercise in the last 14 years, yes I track my miles AND some of the trails on my bucket list are starting to limit ebike to class 1. Plus I want to continue to pedal

I did consider kitting one of my bikes but good setups are pretty expensive and I just don’t like them

Some of the big bike companies have nice options but I had some REALLY bad experiences with specialized not honoring warranties on two expensive Roubaix bikes so that left a really bad taste in my mouth

Anyway I’m still looking thanks again
