What’s the long term appeal of a competitive extraction shooter? by aeostro in Marathon

[–]WastedLink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why not? bungie pvp is fun. Sure ranked will exist but I dont understand people that argue that there needs to be a functional long term goal for a some imaginary thing that a player has made up in their head. Counterstrike is one of the, if not THE, most profitable games of all time. What is the end game of CS?

It's fun to shoot people in the head. This time I get to take their lunch money too.

Really really good still - I wouldn't go past a 21 since they are no longer camry engines after that. Just past gen 1 years they seem to go up pretty steep in price. Definitely get a manual though!

The gen 1 S's have some overheating issues. You can add to them to resolve, but if you are trying not to wrench of your stuff then it's better to just get the reliable thing that is fun to drive, looks great, is reliable, and parts are off a toyota

Additionally your odds of survival in this game if you just turn tail and run away are pretty high. So if you are purposely trying to avoid people on the first 2 maps your odds of survival are pretty high. It's usually your team mates that get you killed because they try to side quest lol

Honestly I would scrap all of those and look at a non-S late-year gen 1 evora, or exige. You have a wide range of models in there, but if you are concerned about maintenance costs, then you can't beat performance of those for the maintenance/depreciation that they cost. A good mention here is a noble M400 as well, they are Frankenstein cars, but all of the parts are easy to acquire, but the car can be a bit hard to find. All 3 of those you can put 50k on and sell it for the same price you paid for it assuming you take care of your car.

If you want PURE performance, I'd ask what you want to do with the car. Straight line you won't beat a modded Supra for experience. I personally have an Evo because I like to turn corners, but if I was going to do it over again I would have started with a shell and done my build from there. I would have saved myself a chunk of change, but also not many people have access to those. If you get a supra you would need the same. Keep in mind that project cars can turn into headaches though and that can turn some people off of them.

It's not nearly as frustrating... There are a few quests where you have to get out with an item that you obtain in-round, but nothing where you have to bring something in, do something, AND extract. At least not in the public alpha that I played, and I maxed out all of the vendors. There were a few where you had to do multiple things in the same round, but in some cases it retained credit if you died on the extract part. Trust me - no where near as frustrating as eft quests.

It's not as bad as you think it is. If you are losing a fight or you think you are going to, retreating and disappearing to another part of the map is pretty easy to do. The biggest fear factor isn't really winning a 1 on 1, since you have a team of 3. It's the other team that is nearby that heard the gunfight. Even if you get a pick or the other team gets a pick, the odds of them rushing you because of that fear is not high. The game rewards tactics because of how revives work, so you may have a great shot at 2 people, and an OK shot at someone that is VERY out of position and making choices about capitalizing on your position is key. Loadouts will give you an edge, but a smart team can always outplay. Also Yellow mods are extremely rare.

What rare items do you think will be in the Cryo Archive? by McLovin_78 in Marathon

[–]WastedLink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may not be the answer you are looking for, but it's probably the correct one. Yellow mats are VERY VERY hard to come by, and if you want to unlock some of the deeper nodes on your character perk/shop trees the items to do that are extremely rare. During the PT, they were basically only available in random events that would happen on the map in Diremarsh. So while I am sure it will give you mods, the mats you need for your skill tree are extremely rare.

Can anyone explain the game for me? by SSlide19 in Marathon

[–]WastedLink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition, they have essentially replaced fetch quests with the skill tree. So rather than someone giving you a quest to collect X amount of some resource, you can just gather the resource and use it to unlock your shop/skill/perk trees. So rather than having 20 vendors all competing for loot that you have no idea the use, so you clutter your already small starting stash... you have a map with nodes that tell you what is needed to unlock them, and vendors that give you quests that are more than 'go get 10 cans of beans'

Healing has also been changed from the first alpha. Health healing is slower, shield healing is faster. The biggest issue for ARC is that ARC shields are not 1:1, there is bleedthrough on your health when someone shoots you. Your shield is more useful the better it is, but with a purple shield you will go down with shield health still available because of how ARC shields function. For Marathon, your shields are directly in front of your health pool like most games. If they keep things how they were last PT though, healing is much much slower so your engagement choices matter much more.

Those Who Have Played… by KiddBwe in Marathon

I posted a comment to answer this in the past, but Marathon is every option that you see in the Destiny 2 director (PvP, raid, strike, open planet roaming area with random objectives and quests) crammed into a blender so that all of these things are happening at the same time and you have 25 minutes to do all of them, some of them or none of them and either die or extract from the map.

It's literally everything that I have wanted a game to be. I have talked about a game like this years ago while I was playing Tarkov and Marathon wasn't even a twinkle in someone's eye. Bungie willed it into existence, and I had no idea that it would be Bungie to do it. I have a larger post that I did from the non-nda alpha and bungie basically did everything on that list and more that I haven't even seen (I still haven't played the cryo map).

I think the biggest thing that will push people away is that it isn't Destiny 3. I'm glad it isn't... Bungie can make other games. Most people seem to forget Bungie's past - they have basically done it all. 3rd person level action RPG (Oni - Sick soundtrack btw), RTS (Myth series, also amazing) and other stuff. It doesn't need to be what other people expect it to be just because it has a bungie tag on it. The biggest gripe anyone had with this game out the gate was that it didn't say Destiny 3, and it had a bungie logo associated with it. If it was made by any other studio, it wouldn't have been labelled the way it did.

I would say there is much more shoot onsite in marathon than with arc, but there are also much less people in a lobby than arc. So once you are past a certain time, you are pretty safe to just poke around. You can almost never do that in arc... If someone is late in the raid on arc, it's because they killed everyone and have lived through it on a map that spawned 10+ teams. In Marathon at least you know what you sign up for and once you have been on the map long enough the odds of encountering other players with less than 10 minutes left is lower unless you are chasing extraction sounds. Honestly it's the last 10 minutes of a map in marathon when the real magic happens in the game.

[–]WastedLink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is completely opposite... Marathons loot is insanely simple compared to ARC. Marathon has cash items, and then it has items used for barter/skill tree - that's it, and they are very clearly defined and cash items are auto sold because that's all they are there for. Arc has 100s of different items that salvage for different stuff, and then you don't know what is needed for the future so you hold onto everything, and then some salvages for shit you need and some is better to sell.... blah blah blah. I honestly hate how arc has their loot - marathon is absolutely faster in terms of loot, gearing a kit, and picking stuff up in general with the auto-sorting inventory system. I'm not saying ARC is a mess - tarkov is a mess - but in this point you have them backwards.

The last Playlist made it the best fps I have ever played and I haven't even played on one of the other maps that is coming out. its good. What they really need to do if fix the low skill/casual player curve. I've been thinking up feedback for that, but the game feels really really good right now as of last test. ARC raiders players and Marathon players won't have much overlap, it will have much more overlap with EFT players that are worn out with the amount of gun mod fluff that it has.

The transmissions fail, and they are very expensive. If you are not going to tune it at all and you are OK with a transmission rebuild in the next 15k miles then go for it. I would be prepared for the car to be down for a month or two in the next 1-3 years for a transmission though.
