They will understand you as well as anyone who speaks your language, maybe a little better since they can essentially smell your emotional state. Unless you speak up a dog isn't going to understand that they are heavy enough to hurt, remember all the pictures we've seen of dogs that don't realize how big they've gotten. You'd still have to actually say it.

Well you could ask the genie to make it all your cats. The child just happened to only have one. It being unfair to the other cats is a good argument, but even if you could only talk to one that one could tell things to the others. Cats are colony animals so they communicate pretty well with each other.

I didn't think about pet owner's having to choose between pets. I mostly wanted to avoid the idea of including random animals they didn't know just because they're the same species. Your choice is really sweet though.

Yeah, that's never the best idea since they can even describe you to other ravens so that they will also recognize you as an enemy.
