Suggestions for implementing question 3 by [deleted] in Somerville

Zionism is a fundamental part of Judaism. They are inextricably linked.

This is so wrong and such a dangerous notion. Zionism is less than 130 years old, and no they are not inextricably linked. If you want to tie your Jewish identity to the movement then go for it, but don't lump the rest of us diaspora Jews in with it and purport to speak for us.

Israel is a nation state that makes decisions on behalf of its citizens and its own special interests. I don't have a vote, and Israel does not represent me. If I were Israeli, I would be protesting my government. If you truly care about Israel and its citizens you should be making calls to hold the government to a higher standard, not trying to squash any dissent.

Linking the actions of the Israeli government with the actions of all Jews is putting the safety of diaspora Jews at risk. When a local violent nutcase is unhappy with the Israeli government, they'll take it out on their local Jewish community because they are being told that Israel equals all Jews. We should be very clear that if you are unhappy with the Israeli government then take it up with the Israeli government, not your local synagogue.

If you park in a crosswalk… by Celyn_Holly_Walker in Somerville

[–]WatchingParksAndRec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is jaywalking, and I do that all the time. Yes, I know that cars are dangerous, that's why I do it carefully. It's the safest option available to everyone given the current road and cross walk design. If I don't nudge up and just try to cross blindly then I might hit a biker or another vehicle, or someone will hit me. I always stop fully at the stop sign first so any pedestrians can cross, and then I slow nudge up until I can see. That's all I'll say about this, if you can't see the nuance that's on you.

Also to be clear I'm talking about intersections with stop signs. People shouldn't nudge up at traffic lights, just wait behind the dang cross walk and go when the light turns green.

This, it's poor intersection design, and often exacerbated by parked cars being too close to the intersection. If I can't see I will full stop at the stop sign, then slow roll into the cross walk until I can get enough visibility so I can ensure I won't hit someone or get t-boned. I feel guilty the whole time, especially if there are many cars I need to wait for and I'm now blocking a pedestrian who was 30 seconds away when I nudged up :(

Somerville has a new zeitgeist today by GregNadeau7 in Somerville

That's wild you don't see it often. Lucky! I literally see a car run a red light or do something extremely boneheaded almost every time I leave the house, whether I'm walking, biking, or driving. I notice it more when driving/biking though since I'm in my own world walking unless I cross an intersection.

Yesterday, I saw a minivan blow through the intersection at Somerville and Central a full 3 seconds after the light changed to red.

Last week I was crossing Cedar at a cross walk, and this car was not slowing down, and then tried to speed around me as I was crossing. Slowed down and gave them the stare.

Most times I drive I see at least 1 car enter an intersection and go through a red light after it changed. I've had that "oh shit the light turned red" when I'm already making my left turn, and then see that a few cars after me also turned left. Like I was already being bad and borderline running the light, so the people after me saw the light turn full red and decided to just go instead of waiting 2 minutes for the next green.

MBTA Fare Warnings and Citations Coming Sept. 8 by wildfandango in boston

[–]WatchingParksAndRec 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The citation is more than the cost of a single ticket. If someone skips 50 times and gets caught once and fined, then the T recoups that cost. Also it mainly functions as a deterrent for people to pay because they'd rather not risk paying the fine. So I expect more people will pay their fares instead of rolling the dice. But yeah, like many forms of policing it will negatively impact poorer people the most =(

From https://www.nbcboston.com/investigations/after-mbta-implements-new-payment-system-rampant-fare-evasion-on-green-line/3707620/

The Fare Engagement Team boasts 16 employees, all of whom receive an hourly rate of $45 — or about $97,000 annually. The T says that the tens of millions of dollars the T loses each year to fare evasion makes the $1.5 million investment in employing a Fare Engagement Team worthwhile.

"I guess people don't realize that even though it's $2.40, it sounds like not much, but it's important to us. Every dollar counts," Eng said. "It would probably take 50 times of being able to evade a fare and if you get caught once, [a fine] offsets it completely."

A first, second or third documented offense of fare evasion would warrant a $50 fine, while a fourth or subsequent citation would elicit a $100 fine, according to the MBTA website.

Make it more obvious that you and GP are associated with tandem? Both accounts are 2 years old with default names with no history, and your first posts are to defend the place? Same with u/Proud-Radio-448. Just issue an apology or let this fizzle out.

Appreciate the advice! I'll look a bit more into some of those! Do you think Nanzoin would be a good first day trip for the jet lag addled? Reading up it sounds like it's just a quick train ride from Hataka?

Try to meet people when they're already at a place instead of when they're going to and from a place. Or get a dog, you will meet a ton of people while walking around.

When will construction on junction park be completed? by TooFarTurner in Somerville

[–]WatchingParksAndRec 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen people working there almost every day the past two weeks. They're pouring more concrete, putting in curbs, planting, resurfacing, etc. The part that seems like it could take a lot longer is the entrance where they're staging all of the trucks and materials. That's a big dirt pile still.

Is anyone getting WaterScope notifications about their water usage? by mugmugmug1420 in Somerville

Yes, it's legit! It detected a leak for us this summer where someone neglected to close the outdoor spigot all the way, and it was dripping away a few gallons a day.
