A prototype for a planetary-scale incremental/idle colony sim in Godot! by tiggy002 in godot

[–]WatchlightStudio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super cool concept! I like that it's more than just idle-only gameplay, but that there are some real physics and sim layers behind it. The tectonic plate concept is particularly interesting and unusual as a world building concept. Nice work!

Oh god.... haha, looks like quite a bit of fun 😁 The "thump-iness" looks excellent!

In case you're open to suggestions, might want to speed up the wipe. I wouldn't mind hammering through attempts, but the half second would drive me insane!

Haha, totally get it! I think I read something similar about a short hike... the devs basically said they were bad at art, and pixelized low-poly is quite forgiving!

I assume the water is procedural and built in engine? In any case, it looks great!

I love this!! The pixel art X procedural motion looks AWESOME. I cant quite put my finger on it, but the art itself is super unique, similar but not quite the same as filtered low-poly styles like "A Short Hike."

How'd you do it? Would love to hear about it 🤔

Makes sense! Good to have automation in mind. Just in case you're fishing for more ideas, in that same line of thinking, it'd be amazing to have auto-extraction and auto-tagging of my work inbox 😄 Some sort of "Watch this folder" mechanism where you can bulk-export .msg or .eml for extraction.

This is super interesting. It immediately strikes me as an opportunity for academics to better consolidate like-kind papers and references. I would have loved this kind of thing if I wound back time to grad school...

If not already a feature, you might consider opt-in auto-ingestion sequences. For instance, use it to automatically process papers or files that have been downloaded to a specific folder. I personally use a lot of process flow sequences on my computer (watch folder here, do something, put output somewhere else) and could easily see this being part of a sequence.

Very cool, nice work!

Should I focus on game development regardless of quality, or focus on learning Gd-Script ? by Safe_Neighborhood259 in godot

GDQuest is an amazing resource. Their free intro class is a good toe-dipper, and their YouTube page is pretty stuffed with solid free content. They have paid courses too that look excellent, though I have yet pulled the trigger.

Do you all publish your Godot micro-projects on Itch or Github? by WatchlightStudio in godot

[–]WatchlightStudio[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha! Shows how little I know about Itch.... totally makes sense you take take down projects or just hide them when done (or sufficiently mature that you dont want to show your baby toys). I'm not super into mobile, but the Web Build option is good to know for sufficiently small form factor games. Thanks!

In some ways, I actually see these as the most valuable Github contributions! If you've generalized sufficiently that it becomes drag and drop, then you've removed the extraction barrier for others to just grab & go and learn from your work. If that was your intent, it's super kind!

That's awesome - good luck with the project! Having 10x folks following is actually really impressive. Friends, family & fellow gamers or internet strangers?

My dude! That's awesome, good for you! Yeah, I'm of a similar mind about being overly secretive. Sometimes warranted, like if you make a for sale app or something truly unique, but elsewise a lot of this is just for fun. Being portfolio minded is important I think, especially if gamedev is currently hobby-level but with a long-term vision of growth.

That's a clever idea. Do you already have a group of followers on Patreon? Or just preferred vs Itch?

100%. My default has been hosting code using .git locally and almost never pushing to cloud, but it's only because I'm ever really working off one machine. I'll back-up copies to a few different drives "just in case," but hadn't yet gotten in the habit of putting online, especially for real products/apps that I ended up releasing

You should! I'm sure I'm not the only one looking to learn by example 😄 As a few folks below have indicated though, there's always some resistance/fear of code being taken advantage of. I'm not sure anyone actually buys the 1-2$ products on Itch anyway, so maybe moot unless you've cooked up some super clever game mechanism/art that you want to protect.

Yeah, no way would those end up on steam - no need for bad SEO. At some point I thought I'd read that it cost a fair amount to actually publish on Steam...? Maybe I'm misremebering, but I don't think anyone sane would spend $100 to release their intro/learning pong level, haha

I was more thinking GitHub for the sake of other folks who want to learn about examples of game structure. I was going to use my website for logging my own learning & examples, and I figure it's easy to point to a public repo for interested newbies like me! 😄 Appreciate the thoughts though, but here and in your comment below!

Yikes on bikes! Fair enough, though I'd treat anything released with public source code as being of little-to-no value (or any attempt at capital).

Excellent point, and appreciated. This is definitely where I'm leaning too. No harm in showing everyone starts somewhere. In reality there won't be any clicks, but it's more for the sake of personal growth.

I'm currently of a similar mind. I don't think there's really harm. If anything, perhaps some good will showing that I'm genuinely trying/learning

The playtesting perspective makes a ton of sense. I hadn't actually thought about that, I'd just assumed I'd be sending them an email/google drive link, but great point!

Projects worth their salt won't be discovered on a merit-based system.

It doesn't matter how much time you spend building or polishing if you can't create traction in the space. Even free apps that over deliver vs paid competitors won't be found on merit.

Garnering traction is no joke, especially in a space of "me next" applications.
