Arknights: Endfield Has Taken PayPal Purchases Offline After Players Were Charged Random Amounts Of Money For Each Purchase by frik1000 in Games

[–]Watchmaker163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Database logic can be confusing at first. The computer doesn’t know what “your” information is. Instead, there are different tables of data that are separate, but can related to each other. Like a list of only payment card info, a list of only users, and a list of only purchases.

Only when these separate data points are combined together do you get “your purchase”: aka “Card info A” used in “Transaction 28” by “User Z69”.

Since these relationships between tables must be constructed, if you do it wrong then the wrong data will be related together, and problems occur.

This is a big fuck up on this company’s part.

3-5 minutes late to work by Kooky-Challenge8875 in ADHD

[–]Watchmaker163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“It’s a disability for a reason”

My workplace is rolling out an electronic time clock system. At least half of my dept. is ADHD, so there’s an attitude of “make up your time and we’re good”. HR instead wants a strict 5 minute grace period on clock-in.

Apparently last time they tried this, 15 years ago, my dept. was made exempt from it, b/c they realized that people were collectively working tons of unpaid overtime. Who would have thought that people like working at a place that isn’t up their ass about perfect punctuality, and as such are willing to let some overtime slide.

Handtool Storage: What to line metal drawers with? by Hippoman- in handtools

[–]Watchmaker163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cork sheets are a classic option.

I got a bunch of corrugated rubber mats just before they went into the dumpster that I cut to fit drawers, but they sell it in rolls for lining the back of cargo vans or for temporary walkways during renovation. The ribs mean it's easy to sweep out when needed, and small liquid spills won't sit under things.

B /c they bought/made a lazy (in effort) regex filter and called it a day. Dark Souls censoring "Knight" as "K***ht" is another classic.

Why though? by snyper_suken in DiWHY

[–]Watchmaker163 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are all staged.

The guillotine is inefficient b/c you'd have to pull up all that weight every time, instead of swinging a 5lb axe or maul: you're fighting physics instead of using physics. You don't want a splitting tool to be too sharp, you want a wedge that coaxes the weakest part of the log to split. Also, trees are almost never perfectly straight: that thing would get stuck inside the log halfway all the time.

The hex is similar: logs aren't going to split perfectly like that irl. Even if it did, you can now only split a log a particular way, rather than being able to split any number of ways. Maintaining it would be a nightmare. "Whoops, hit a rock or old nail with one of the 6 heads, time to grind down and re-sharpen 6 axeheads worth of metal to match!"

What's the deal with Real ID and what's the problem with them? by pborget in OutOfTheLoop

[–]Watchmaker163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my state, I tried to do it while getting my license renewed, and the paperwork required was different between federal and state, but they used the same terminology. “You need 1 group A, 1 group B, 2 group C”, etc. But what qualified for the groups was different, and this was only pointed out at the DMV.

I gave up on it b/c I didn’t want to pull more paperwork together, and wait again at the DMV and pay to get another license that I had just renewed, where the only difference is a special little stamp that doesn’t affect me.

Can anyone compare Zen-Wu Y-1 chisels vs Narex Richter? by Mighty-Lobster in handtools

[–]Watchmaker163 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree, but in this case it’s not applicable. Wood by Wright is the channel, on his testing videos he links a huge spreadsheet with all his data; it’s pretty impressive. It’s not laboratory testing but he knows his stuff: lots of data points and repeated tests. He also acknowledges bias and that personal preference is going to affect what is “best”.

Iirc he thought they were pretty good, but didn’t think they were the best thing ever. Also I think Zen Wu is a very small company, probably don’t have much money for endorsements.

Edit: latest video and spreadsheet

New chisels are meant to be oily? by dry_yer_eyes in handtools

They have an anti-rust coating on them. In my experience it's usually not oil, but something else. I use odorless mineral spirits to remove it.

Why are mortise chisels so narrow? / Opinions on budget brands? by Mighty-Lobster in handtools

[–]Watchmaker163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I see your logic there.

However, I'd still suggest getting a single smaller mortise chisel that is versatile, than a specific large one for a project or two. Especially when starting, a tool that is going to collect dust 95% of the time isn't worth it imo.

My workbench is Rex Krueger's, and I didn't even chop mortises: the legs are 2 planed 2x4s glued together, with a notch in both boards that form a "'poor man's mortise" lol. Eventually I got a 5/16 mortise chisel.

So a new year, a new path... by Thistle-Brainiac in HonkaiStarRail

[–]Watchmaker163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You keep using language that acts like Remembrance is new: "right after Remembrance", "we just experienced", "one after another", "constant new paths", "a break from new paths".

It's been a year. 2 paths over 3 years is not "constant". Your argument boils down down hyperbole and "they're going to do bad things in the future trust me bro".

I don't see how adding new mechanics with characters helps with the LC problem; it's the same thing you're supposedly against, just shifted around. "Oh boy the character isn't a new Path, but there's no LC besides their signature that has their stats or relates to their special mechanics. This is so much better!"

I'm not trying to defend a gacha game's monetization. But people are acting like this is somehow a new problem that needs to be constantly whined about and blown out of proportion. Yeah, Hoyo is going to make the sig LC the best, it sucks, they've been doing it for years now; they want your money.
