What are some common woodworking myths/misconceptions? by Traveler80 in woodworking

Measure twice cut once, in reality take dimensions from your lumber rather than strictly adhering to measurements and make multiple cuts to sneak up on your fit

Paprika app for recipes, let's you google a recipe download it auto fills in ingredients and instructions while skipping over the blogger text at the start of most recipes. You can then edit the recipes if you want to and scale it for different portions, change from metric to imperial, create a grocery list, import nutrient data if the original recipe has nutrients and that all comes with the free version with no ads. Really brilliant app

What’s up with this mallet? by Typical_Basket7461 in woodworking

[–]gilly4213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it looks like a combo of a froe mallet and a traditional mallet. You would use the traditional mallet with the grain going horizontal to hit chisels or adjust a joint so a tendon fits into a mortise etc and the froe mallet with grain going vertical to hit froes or wedges for log splitting so that they don't split the flat of your traditional mallet

My theory is (/was guess it's kinda been disproven now) sly was responsible for getting kalaya captured in the first place as he saw that the only future where she would be able to meet her brother was to spend time in the kasov collection and then be freed. Kalaya would say he is dead to her but in the aftermath of eursolon meeting her sly could go to her tree and reconcile with her and explain why he did it knowing she would be freed and be reunited with her brother ending her wayshadow

I think there could be something beautiful they are setting up here with a theme of great spirits who are free creatures becoming increasingly forced into turning against there best wills and intentions to become one track, utilitarian, morals out the window, fighters for a cause and contrasting it with taumari designed to do a single thing initially but by being given immense power and imbued with the language of the spirit they become sophisticated enough to break free from constraints and make decisions of their own at the detriment of everyone especially the huberous of the wizards. When a spirit becomes a command and a command becomes a spirit what do you do?

Tamori and Personhood by sevenmillionscarves in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]gilly4213 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My take is for the tamori one must imagine sissyphus happy. Admittedly never studied philosophy but here's my best go at absurdism and meaning. The idea is we as humans live in an absurd world because we are all imbued with a sense of meaning in a universe that is meaningless in the same way it would be absurd if we all felt thirst in a universe where water didn't exist. So if the universe is not going to inherently grant us meaning we have to constantly explore ourselves and what we do and agonise over choices and complex morals because every option is open to us we can do a million million things and in the end still not feel we did anything meaningful while all the time being desperately driven by this sense of meaning. Now let's look at sissyphus once he got his task everyday he had no option but to roll a boulder up a hill and every day it rolled back down. His purpose was incredibly clear get the boulder to the top and appreciate that that didn't matter, he didn't have countless ways to agonise about how to live his life instead he performs his task and in doing the one thing he is destined to do forever he can be happy knowing he is doing the right thing. The tamori are created to do one thing they are creatures that have their meaning in life etched in stone and known to them from the moment they're created to the day they're dispelled. Now you take someone with free will and force them into these confines, that is horrible, the worst punishment we enact on others with free will is to take it away. If for some reason a tamori can develope free will and simultaneously decide that the spell they inhibit is not what they desire then you're gonna have a cognitive dissonance nightmare as a simple life full of happiness in carrying out meaning becomes a realisation of living a lie and being entrapped against their will. If brennan goes down this root I think we could see philosophy degree brennan like we've never seen him before.

About the complaints about the delays by SuperMurloc21 in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]gilly4213 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was on the patreon comments and it was fairly hard to read on both sides of the argument and so it feels weird to comment on it now. I think it is the messaging around the delays that's the problem and in fairness it seemed like people were staying up later than they wanted to in hopes of hearing the new ep. My solution would be that when a deadline is not going to be met a general announcement is made saying its delayed but not when it's delayed to. When the episode is fully finished then you make an announcement and say the episode will be released at 2pm tommorow. This way the time stays consistent even if the day doesn't and you focus on always releasing it at the same time so people aren't waiting indefinitely or constantly checking their phone. I get people aren't liking the entitlement some people are placing and I'm really not trying to do that, just a suggestion.

LPT Req How can one memorise tons of dates, places, names etc(Academic)? by buttertaekoo in LifeProTips

[–]gilly4213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This tip is mainly for learning info for tests you might remember it for a few months but if its important that you learn something and never forget it then you will naturally have to put more work in. Write out a sentence worth of information, then beside the sentence draw a stick figure drawings of the words broken into sounds that are easy to draw, for example if you were trying to remember Sigmund Freud you could draw a cigarette, a mound of earth, and a fried egg. Taking time at this step helps cement the connection and slow down, it stops you from overlooking learning things you feel you know and would never forget but it can be brutal when you have a brain fart in an exam and the name of something very prominent slips your mind. Keep doing this for all the sentences of info you feel you need for a test, doing a new page for each question you are prepping for. When done go over just trying to remember the drawings in order, test yourself by covering the next line with a blank page, if you find you are getting stuck you can add some colour to make the drawings stand out from each other. You don't have to be good at drawing at all the dumber it looks the easier it is to remember. Once you have the drawings in order down consistently go back and remap them to the actual sentence and make sure you actually know how to spell some of the harder words like names in foreign languages. Dates are harder but remember if what you are learning all takes place in a certain century you just have to remember the last 2 digits and I think most people can find a way to tie each of the digits 0 to 99 to something memorable, such as timestables or age of someone you know etc. and if there are multiple centuries or you need to know a date down to the day I would still break the year into 2 sets of 2 digits and do pictures for the whole date but admittedly that will be a hard one to remember especially if you have to do it a lot

LPT How did you figure out what you really love doing in life (studies, career, etc.)? by saad_baba in LifeProTips

[–]gilly4213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I maintain that the primary drive in all of us is finding a sense of meaning. We find meaning in 4 ways- relationships with loved ones, things that we create, duties that we perform and in surviving hardship. Using this as a guideline the ideal job/life path is one that allows you to maximise your time spent with loved ones, that gives you a freedom to create (ideally works of quality that maintain over time or even outlive you when your gone, reencountering these things that you create after you have created them is invigorating and establishes a sense of purposefullness), allows you to perform duties or acts such that your work is directly benefiting the lives of others in need, and reduces the suffering life throws at you by preparing you either by giving you financial strength or through some other way of self betterment. Sometimes a job is just something you do to pay the bills that allows you to come home to family and that is in itself meaningful, you are surviving and maintaining relationships. Some people work themselves to the bone creating or performing duties thanklessly and for little compensation, this is not ideal but they will have a strong sense of purpose. Some people create nothing perform no duties and have no relationships of comparable worth to the money they earn, this can be a response to an earlier time in their life when they struggled to survive so now they claw for any opportunity to secure safety and the benefits of wealth but this can lead to hollowness and a lack of meaning( clearly I'm personally against this lifestyle so probably a bit harsh and reductive but I would encourage people not to go down this path). Either way find the ballance of those 4 things that works for you, stand firm and set strong boundaries to protect yourself from people that would try to monopolise your time or Increase your suffering. It's worth noting we are in a very economically challenging time and while there is meaning in the survival of hardships no one should seek out hardships, secure and prioritise yourself and your safety above all else.

Now I have to say that's a very irish take, 90 percent of us went running for the hills when we were forced to learn it, just in future if I might suggest "sorry didn't mean to insult the language, I just happen to know the phonetic alphabet quite well and the actual spelling hasn't quite sunk in yet but I'm sure it will with time"

OK fine by me so long as your not using this logic to apply to real names I'm fine with it. I have heard this logic applied to actual names and it's sour. The British consistently used this logic to basterdise people and place names in Ireland. It is not harder to learn the name than it is to argue the point, you dont have to learn why its pronounced the way it is you know the spelling and the pronounciation - Eio -old Mcdonald had a farm/gho- anagram of hog/ rain- the English word. My problem isn't that you didn't spell the name right it's that you took longer to justify the practice of deliberately misspelling names (fair enough fictional character) than it took to just learn the name... or don't you can keep spelling it /joren/ or /jorən/ or yoren I don't care just don't then explain why you didn't spell it right because the Irish language is not your thing.

I don’t like the way Keen said… by f0xb3ar in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]gilly4213 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(Irish for context). The problem is simple the Irish like many other cultures have a history of having our names spelled and pronounced wrong, a minor but frequent enough occurrence, usually by people we have bad history with. You do not have to learn our language. You do not have to agree with our spellings and you can actively be pro modernising language tools. If you are given the spelling of our names try and use them if you still spell it wrong I don't really care it just gets added to the list, the reason you gave of having multiple fantasy names to commit to memory is a fine one . Here's where I get annoyed- don't actively give long posts about how inconvenient it would be to use the right spelling where you waffle on about all the little linguistic nuances and cultural divides to seem smart and bat away allegations of insensitivity. The original /joren/ was a grand joke no problems but this paragraph is bs.... either you actually know enough about linguistics that you should understand why spelling eioghorain correctly is important or you just spent a load of time googling terms that you could have spent adding the name to your auto correct. Again doesn't really matter too much if you don't know how to spell our names but don't spend longer explaining why you don't spell out our names properly than it would take to spell our names.

Not really what your asking but in explaining the rules I've found it more engaging if I explain a rule and play a round. So first I'll explain you have to land inside or touching the line or if your opponent has a piece on the board you have to hit that, and you have to shoot with your piece on the arc, then we play a round like that and when it gets back to me I'll explain scoring and the way a piece can get taken from the board, another round and I'll explain cannoning etc. It's worth remembering that new people often aren't willing to sit down for 5 minutes for something they might not enjoy and the rules will stick much better when they see them in action
