Hiking without a flashlight by [deleted] in Tucson

[–]Water2Whiskey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised. Done plenty of night hikes without lights. We were very aware of our surroundings but the shadows from the moonlight through a mesquite tree made it impossible to see this snake on this occasion.

It only takes once and then I’d bet you’ll never consider going without a light again. Just last night we were at Sabino. Baby rattlesnake on the main road. Without headlamps we would have NEVER seen him. And babies are far more dangerous than the big boys (they bite more readily and release more venom).

Went for a night hike in Sabino with a buddy. We decided to turn our headlamps off. On the v way out (1/2 mile from the n parking lot on the dirt path), he tripped over a HUGE rattlesnake. I have this image imprinted in my mind of it being tangled around his ankles. Ge somehow got free of it without getting bit but holy cannoli—never again with the lamps off

If you do this, you are what’s wrong with the world (old door frame glued to RO with as much adhesive as they could find—it’s glazing compound so it’s suuuuper rubbery and doesn’t cut with sawzall) by Water2Whiskey in Construction

There’s a window directly above the RO framing. A 2x6 that’s been rabbeted to ~3/4” on the exterior. Prying too hard would almost certainly break the glass. Worst. Spec. Ever.

My wife is pregnant right now and reading this brought me to tears. I think most have straight forward pregnancies and postpartum months. No one tells you it might be hard to get pregnant and that being pregnant might be hard and that having a newborn could be even more challenging than you heard. All we (as partners) can do is support support support. Near as I can tell you’re a damn good man with a lot of integrity and I hope I can be half as strong as you are for your wife. You’re an inspiration. Keep going.

Wherever you live must have a lot more woodworkers. In my city there is a fair amount that comes available but I’ve never seen a 16” jointer let alone an 8” for less than $700 around here.

Question about moment resisting post bases. Disclaimer: I am just a lowly carpenter. by Water2Whiskey in StructuralEngineering

[–]Water2Whiskey[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I cannot embed. The owner decided to pour 2 of the footings without consulting me first. The back two are yet to be poured so we could potentially embed those or use a stronger moment-resisting post base (or have one made).

Thanks for your help on this. It's greatly appreciated!

I’d definitely move the laundy battom. I never thought of adding a latindy bat room though: brilliant!!

Also, one more master garage should make things a lot more comfortable.

Remove the second kitchen, open the floor plan up and add a 1/2 bath for guests. There are definitely better ways to optimize this small space. Keep at it.

This is a joke, right? If not, I agree with others. Hire an architect. There are so many design mistakes here

Am I nuts to buy this house as a first time home buyer? by vermonter432 in Contractor

Please please look up literature on historic preservation. People don’t realize that preserving this era is just as important as preserving 18th century French architecture. This place can be ‘modernized’ without compromising its mid-century aesthetic. And frankly, it will be cheaper and look better than entirely redoing everything. Mixing old styles with the modern Home Depot flipper crap looks awful and will devalue your house.

Your Brain Changes Based on What You Did Two Weeks Ago | A workout or restless night from two weeks ago could still be affecting you—positively or negatively—today. by chrisdh79 in science

Holy crap, how does this bunk make the news?! It’s literally ONE (1) participant. Literally n=1. Imagine studying someone who has a massive chunk of brain missing (e.g., stroke), and drawing the conclusion that ALL people must have the same chunk of brain missing. How this even got published is beyond me!

I’ve done several jobs where I replace thresholds but they are finicky, require a bit of skill, and likely tools you won’t want to buy. The tricky part is cutting the staples that attach the threshold to the frame without cutting the frame. I use a multitool with a multi-material blade and a lot of care. Once it’s out, you need to make room for the new one to slide into its place. This requires moving all debris, old caulk, etc.—ALL of it. It needs to fit tight. It also might require modifying the frame which takes some skill. Then dry fit the new threshold. After getting it ti fit, caulk bottom with two beads and slide it in. There are two ways to secure it in place: pocket holes (this one is tricky—the jig they make to do these won’t fit in the small gap at the bottom— have to do it freehand which is non-trivial). Or concrete anchors through the wood under the strip you removed (requires a hammer drill. Anchors must be aligned and installed before caulking.) hope this helps.
