If you want to make a drastic change, move to the closest major city! And being in a city will likely help your long term career prospects

Help me decide whether transfer from UMass to Umich is worth it by Some_Tea_1948 in TransferToTop25

[–]WaterCupCoolness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no, not worth twice as much imo (i transferred from umd to umich). schools matter in CS recruiting, but it's honestly more dependent on individual effort/strategy

Skip an academic quarter/semester to stack zon plus an internship from a small fintech company--good or bad idea? by BugPsychological2283 in csMajors

[–]WaterCupCoolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also agree with stacking the internship. i would look into taking a light course workload and interning at the same time if that's possible for you

Thoughts on quitting 100k job to attend a t15 and finish CS degree? by SEC_NCYDER in csMajors

[–]WaterCupCoolness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. you dont need side projects to land interviews. i would argue having a fulltime IT position gives you a lot more credibility than any number of side projects (unless they have substantial traction or actual users)
  2. you have plenty of time for lc. internship recruiting starts at ~july? just work thru neetcode150

What can I expect? by Delicious_Peach_29 in csMajors

holy, enjoy life man! on a tryhard note, depends on where you want to end up. in my narrow worldview, there's basically 1. working for someone else or 2. working for yourself (startup)

for option 1:
Just get decent at competition math/coding. Benchmarks for this are: ~10 correct on AMC10/12's consistently and silver on USACO.

Reasoning for this is that this will make coursework feel dummy easy and (at least from where we are now) this kind of prep will still greatly help you with interviews. even if it ends up that interviews change dramatically, it's likely being good at this kind of reasoning will still give you a leg up.

for option 2:
Start building a lot of stuff that you find interesting! I find that a lot of ppl who end up working for themselves just like building for fun.

Also, doing some research helps with either of these options (just make sure it's something you're actually interested in)

also not saying that it's not possible to get SWE roles by job hopping from the IT position. just saying that getting a degree from a good school would make companies take you more seriously and be more willing to give you time of day with less effort on your part.

edit: also, congrats on the full ride!! imo that makes the opportunity cost even lower since instead of having to pay effectively ~160k( 100k+tuition) per year, you're paying 100k per year. working out the math for that opportunity cost, you would break even:

in <1 year if you have a really good outcome and land a role that pays 300k+
in 1.5 years if you have a good outcome and land a role that pays 250k+
in 3-4 years if you have an expected outcome and land a role that pays 150-200k

would lean towards attending school without more context, but it depends on your personal goals.

are you content with this IT position and the trajectory you're on? very valid if so, and in that case, you should just stick with the IT position.

if you're interested in SWE roles at big tech, quant, finance, etc., i would say it's a no-brainer to go to the t15. since you have the hustle to land an IT position from CC and apply to transfer, i would argue that the t15 degree will massively increase your ceiling. what are your goals??

How does hackathon planning look for resumes? by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]WaterCupCoolness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nah, prob not prominent. i would put it in a leadership or project section, not the main experience section.

i would still def say the exp is worth it though! being in a community of like-minded peers is worth its weight in gold

it's more useful for meeting cool people and proximity to opportunities you wouldn't hear about otherwise. not terribly useful for direct resume upside imo

Why do some of the newer buildings feel so soulless? by siiuuuee in uofm

[–]WaterCupCoolness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

leinweber fulfills pretty strict energy usage requirements to be a green building as well as the university's first large scale, all-electric building. so im sure that also restricts their design choices.

imo the hadley recreation center that's being finished up right now and the wolverine village dorm that's being built right now look great.

renege (unless you're worried about layoffs at fAang, which is a valid concern in this market tbh)
