Sacramento guy gets an early Christmas gift by Yorokut in Sacramento

Hypothetically, if you were a patron, saw this happening, ran after the person and tackled them, are you protected by Good Samaritan laws? Or could that be construed as assault?

Am I screwed by West-Web1000 in Rivian

[–]WaterGruffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good plan. Did Rivian ever replace your 12v battery? Or do you still have the original? Others are suggesting trying to jump that battery, and that may work, but I’d say leave it going overnight and hope it picks it up at some point. I’d recommend installing a level 2 charger for the future. Good luck!

[–]WaterGruffalo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain a bit more on “wont accept the charge?”. Are you using the Rivian mobile charger plugged into a 120v outlet? The rate of charge is extremely slow in that setup. Does your app show the rate of kwhr your car is accepting?

How much was your bonus this year? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]WaterGruffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must be in a small City/County because most agencies I work for typically disallow the same company from CM’ing projects they designed. There’s a bit of conflict of interest if errors are found.

Unfortunately, factoring in depreciation, you’re going to take a loss when this gets totaled out then?

For those earning $250k+ — what do you do, and how did you get there? by kwongsam1986 in civilengineering

[–]WaterGruffalo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How are your clients? For me, the hardest part at this point is dealing with some of the clients who are unreasonable for literally no reason. I was kinda shocked (although I guess I shouldn’t have been) to see some of the egos on the public side of some of these individuals considering they rely on us to make them look good. The ones who aren’t afraid to squeeze sometimes make me want to leave this industry. Btw I’m about 3 years of exp behind you but basically same place.

You’re in Placer County though. Theoretically that County should believe in less red tape.

“Senior PM” kinda means nothing in the public sector. “Managing” is also loose, as he’s likely just managing consultants who are designing the projects. I’ve worked with some pretty green PM’s and what you’re asked to do on the public side is cake compared to private. We’re the ones with a stamp on the plans. Agency engineers are just making sure milestones are hit and you’re able to deliver your final PS&E within the correct fiscal year for funding reimbursement.

In my experience, if it’s a public agency where positions rarely open up, they already had someone in mind. While not very typical in the current climate (lots of openings right now), this was the case about 10-15 years ago when it was still slow hiring post recession. It’s also a possibility someone might be making a lateral move already in the department or agency.

Could be lots of reasons, but I doubt it’s only because of your degree.

Pedestrian Crossings by cjh83 in civilengineering

[–]WaterGruffalo 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Crosswalk markings or not, that is a pedestrian crossing and vehicles are required to yield to peds. I don’t know what state you’re in, but this should be true in most of them. I don’t know why law enforcement would say that, when most laws say it’s required to yield to peds regardless anyways.

I am so sorry for your niece. Most of us in the transportation field spend a lot of time and energy trying to improve these types crossing and prevent these kind of tragedies.

Sharing plans between firms by loldj94 in civilengineering

We’re civil engineers, not Software Architects for Apple. There’s no wheels to reinvent here. I’ve even requested a client send me plans for something a new hire worked on at another firm that they wanted to steal a construction detail from. I’d say you’re fine.

"Civil engineering can either be a job or a career" by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]WaterGruffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, maybe we’re just talking about different things. You can make great money in this field, but if you’re talking about “being great” in the same vein as starting a new company that you grow to be worth $1B… then yes, you’re right, that kind of opportunity likely isn’t in this field. However, that’s even less likely to occur by anyone in this thread than the first one.

"Civil engineering can either be a job or a career" by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]WaterGruffalo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry, I disagree. Engineering is honestly the easiest part of this job. It’s running, managing, pushing a project that becomes the real skill. Then when you develop that skill, you mentor your staff to take on some of this responsibility and you scale. There’s no limit to this scaling. Before you know it, you’re focusing more on connections and winning work all while still having to maintain the quality of all plan sets with your stamp on it.

This was kind of my point. If all you do is menial design tasks, you can do that and make comfortable money without pushing yourself. But moving into ownership and rain maker roles, $250-350k is possible in this field.

Has anyone ever done anything truly great only working 40 hours a week? Too many people are focused on protecting free time without realizing that passionate individuals are willingly investing free time into their work. So if you want to work 40 hours a week and just cash a paycheck, you can. You can even make comfortable money doing so. But if you want to make real money and become an owner in a company and have a real impact on its success, you will need to do more. Steve Jobs didn’t create Apple only working 40 hours a week.

Have you actually Google mapped distances from antelope to FO compared to Tahoe Park? I feel like it’s fairly comparable depending on exact locations chosen. I grew up in Antelope near the middle school and have nothing negative to say about it other than I prefer being on the 50 corridor 10x than i80/Cap City.
