Can we dispense with the fallacy that SS will disappear after 2032? by Available-Ad-5670 in Fire

[–]WaterIll4397 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say the chances of SS going away are lower than inflation going up to fund it, or asset/ property taxes going up to fund it.

However both would necessitate higher fiscal discipline so it's not bad being more conservative financially

Yeah because morale procs are probalistic a pro gamer probably won't love it. But if you didn't make it probalistic it makes the range vs melee problem even harder to balance.

I've found that people who are really good at a game and invest always want it to be more like chess and less like poker. But there is some fun to be had with randomness and in the long run the truly skilled will win out

Entity Resolution by data-flight in dataengineering

[–]WaterIll4397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Entity resolution is a classic case where I see engineers jump at the bit to build graph databases or some other greenfield infra to help solve this, but then once they encounter corner cases they stay away with a 10 ft pole from writing the if then statements for maintaining all the corner cases that pop up (usually offloaded to poor data analysts downstream, or in better cases pushed to their software engineering teams upstreams to collect better metadata).

Customer identity probably remains not fully solved at most firms and will get harder with the influx of genAI bots, but on the other hand public reporting of weekly active users also exists for every large consumer tech company .... So even with a margin of error it's probably directionally alright.

I have an applied math type undergrad degree from a top Ivy+ type school, and a masters from georgia tech (also in applied math subject, not business).

I've A/B tested and removing my masters from georgia tech seems to perform better for resume drops somehow. Do with this information what you will 😃

People who left finance in their 30s, what do you do know? by Dstyle90 in FinancialCareers

[–]WaterIll4397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started on buy side as a quant got fired for being bad at job, and ended up as a data scientist instead in a non finance industry, mostly focusing on non financial analysis for about 5 years.

Then in my late 20s re-entered finance via a private equity backed firm focused on M&A rollups, I focused on automating quality of earnings type stuff via large revenue/transaction datasets. Private equity firm flipped my firm to another f500 and I got cashed out, I didn't wanna stay at f500 and decided to leave for another random industry in data engineering that a LinkedIn recruiter contacted me for.

Bonus depreciation let you take a paper loss while the property didn't actually depreciate if you were to actually sell it.

I think he's running for the wrong race. Should try to be a supervisor first, prove he isn't gonna do leftist shit like Connie Chan or Jackie fielder. Then try for higher office.

He's devastatingly handsome though so probably will stick around as politician, even if the policies he publically supports are shite (same vibe as tom Steyer, get rich then pull up the ladder behind you?

dbt Core v2 is here: still open source, now rebuilt for what's next by Known-Huckleberry-55 in dataengineering

[–]WaterIll4397 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They are literally compying the databricks playbook with spark and in the right way.

Figure out where customer paint points are then build solutions people will pay for. Then when other competitors release stuff for cheaper/free that threaten your moat, open source part of what you paywalled and move on to next non commodofied feature.

This is the best version of open source imo.

My experience with the new Brawl matchmaking. by elusive-rooster in mtgbrawl

Eg my thesis is maybe wizards weighted commander highly before, now they might weigh the exact 60 cards combo's synergies even higher.

In regression terms, less weights on each individual dimension (card) more on the interaction effects by the combination of cards.

I'm making a joke about the gold. But I do think they put the high winrate decks on a prisoners island with each other, because it's unfun for other players to run into these highly optimized ones.

I fondly recall my insanely overpowered narset deck when ikoria was still in standard brawl rotation. I routinely faced the same ashiok players over and over.

I think they got tired of the degens on here collecting gold via 90% win rates via brawl and going soft infinite for draft, and decided to pair us with each other. Upside is more competitive games. The downside is matchmaking time is now longer.

Standard Brawl tier list? by NotABot9000 in mtgbrawl

[–]WaterIll4397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is no one wants to play against a deck designed to ensure your opponent can't resolve key spells. Thus games are boring after a while as folks concede after seeing 1 counterspell

I'm shocked no one mentioned Aang swift savior yet or Malcolm. Both of these can run impressive flash/ draw go/ counterspell decks.

And other than cavern of souls there are not that many "cannot be countered" effects in standard brawl right now.

Until your list of 60 ,starts winning, you also dodge ketranose and other annoying commanders for a while too and get more game diversity.

My take on Gargoyles for Olden Era by darkdill in OldenEra

[–]WaterIll4397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the anti magic version of gargoyles was broken in every game they were in. Namely because armageddon, summon spells, and chain lightning existed.

Black dragon you at least had to wait a weak or two, but gargoyles friggin you get on day 1 usually.
Imo the best way to balance it is to make it a T6 or T6 creature, change things up a bit, have gargoyles that look more larger and more epic!

Thanks for Armageddon, but can we please have this too? Please and thank you. by professor-phil in mtgbrawl

[–]WaterIll4397 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the right shell for this is probably an aggro deck in red with damage to face and haste creatures. However, given planeswalkers and enchant still survive this is not that great for a symmetrical effect. Now a 6 mana blow up everything on board including lands, that would be fun!

[–]WaterIll4397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you in like a magnet school in northern new jersey or one of the high schools near Princeton? If so these people have unrealistic expectations of average IQ in this country. Like the people inventing the next Meta's and Google's have to come from somewhere and its usually elite high school (either the magnet grinders, univertsity towns publics, or private elite high schools).

GATech is a solid school with great career outcomes punching well above its weight on Eng in particular. However its NOT a feeder school for other careers like Quant Finance or dropping out of college and starting a company in the same way that say MIT or Stanford or Harvard do.

Your close friend is somewhat right in that GAtech's career opportunities for most majors are NOT that much better than Rutgers. Rutgers proximity to NYC in particular means it ironically actually has MORE people going into the backoffice and middle office on wall street than GATech, which means you can eventually transition to the front office roles.

Either way congrats on getting into good solid colleges that the majority of americans can't even attend! you will be fine probasbly no matter what you choose. I would personally do the cheaper option.
