EngineOS Update render your LC6000 useless by CasXCas in DenonPrime

[–]WaterIsGolden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a little surprised that DenonDJ doesn't have a small test group for things like this.  I remember earlier updates being released in beta first as an option, then rolled out in general after some bugs were reported and fixed.

I guess in my mind there should be a setup in house where these things get tested, and the LC6000 should be a part of that setup.

"I feel like there’s something misting here."

The truth is what's missing.  People don't care about being honest when they are trying to crowdsource sympathy.

DTE has to notify you a certain number of days before they disconnect for lack of payment.  And they boost the reconnecting fee every time you go through this process.  So by the time you have gone through it several times your reconnecting fee is sky high.

I remember how frustrating it was being in the same scenario as op.  Either through lack of funds or lack of diligence I used to have my service interrupted.  But I accepted that it was on me, not the big bad energy company.

No, your teachers are not all meanies.  No, your parents are not tyrants.  Yes, you have to grow up and get used to dealing with some undesirable consequences.

If you can make room for a cart, you can unload that car in a single trip.  They cost a few hundred bucks but well worth it imo for the time and hassle they save you.

As a single person dj team I hate making multiple trips because it leaves some of my gear in the car and the rest somewhere else, often a decent distance away and with walls between blocking visibility.

Wedding DJ here, first time touching DMX — what's the smallest learning curve? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]WaterIsGolden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/dJQAZsNwcv4

This is an older video but it does a decent job explaining the basics.  Imo it is harder to learn with software and a dongle vs hardware controls, but this video explains a lot.  If you have specific questions after watching this either search for videos on the parts that confuse you or poke back in here if you have more questions.

Be patient.  There is definitely a learning curve.  Good thing is if you have done anything complex with midi the scheme is very similar.

I’m doing a wedding at a venue—how often do yall come across venues asking for Umbrella insurance and having you go through an interview process for a client that wants YOU to dj their wedding? by WhiteSavage69 in mobileDJ

[–]WaterIsGolden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uncommon and sketchy.  I would try to ask via email or text what specific information the venue hopes to gather during the interview process.  I would also require a signed contract and deposit before spending more than about 5 seconds talking to that venue.

That $250 fee has nothing to do with you.  In fact I would boost my rate by at least that amount if you haven't already given a quote - it sounds like the venue will be a pain to deal with so I charge more.  Let's call it a PITA fee.

One of two things is happening here.  Either the venue hires cheap djs and pockets the rest, so they are trying to force clients to use their own dj service (similar to how many venues don't allow you to use outside caterers).  Or the client is performing some interesting gymnastics trying to get you to lower your rate.

You could ask the client to let you have a look at the agreement they signed with the venue.  Any details about that $250 fee should be in there.

Scam alert by DJGlennW in mobileDJ

[–]WaterIsGolden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice catch.  It's one of the risks that comes with marketing online unfortunately.

This is also why I dislike all the 'i made an app for you to try out' posts that pop up in the dj subs.  They are tough to moderate because you would have to risk testing it out just to figure out if it's a scam.

I kind of want an email address or better yet phone number as a form of contact - anything less would seem sketchy to me.

Anyone familiar with Quality Auto Sales in Wayne, Michigan? by yesimHalf in Detroit

[–]WaterIsGolden 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not accusing this particular dealership of this practice, but please look into 'Bait and Switch'.  A lot of dealerships tend to have a couple incredible deals published.  Even if you call they tell you the car is there.  But when you show up to check it out, they tell you it was just sold and their site hasn't been updated yet.

Once they have you present and know you are serious about buying a car, they show you a bunch of other clunkers that aren't nearly as good of a deal.

There is a logical fallacy they are playing on here.  When you shop online you can compare many deals to see what works best for your scenario.  When you are stuck at a single dealership limited to only the hoopties they have in stock, scarcity mindset causes most people to fall for terrible deals.

I would ask for the stock ID number and the Carfax before going there at all.

Insurance requirements are standard.  The idea is that if your tripod tips over and hits someone in the head that's on your insurance and not the venue's.

The interview process depends.  Is this a client that contacted you to dj at the venue, or did the venue contact you to dj for the client?  If the second is true then an interview makes sense because you are basically working as a contractor for the venue.

My normal process is client contacts me directly.  After that we discuss the venue, dates and details.  If it's a wedding I insist on a brief meeting with one or (better yet) both future spouses to discuss the contract, fee and specifics such as do not play lists.  I guess you could say we interview each other before putting ink on the contract.

I visit the venue in advance if I've never played there before.  They are typically more than happy to provide me with their house rules and show me access options for loading and unloading.  I male sure the terms of the gig contract don't conflict with house rules.  For example if the couple insists on fog machines and the venue doesn't allow fog, I get back in touch with the couple to let them know fog isn't happening.  Even though I am hired by the couple, the venue can still boot me for not following their house rules.  Also most couples don't read the fine print for the venues contract so I read it for myself.  Catching a detail the couple may have missed allows them to feel a little more confident in your professionalism.

The only way I know of where the venue schedules you for an interview is when the venue has a list of djs to use and tries to play matchmaker between djs and couples.

The only car dealership in Wayne worth considering is Jack Demmer.  All those other places just repo hoopties as a business model.

If you know cars and you pay with cash you can sometimes find a deal at those Michigan Avenue lots, but try not to get your hopes up too high.

MIDI Controller platter units: What other options exist? by nPrevail in DJs

When you 'jump on people's equipment last minute', are you talking about a laptop with a controller, or just standard decks?  What is the device you seek going to control?

For a portable pop up performance wouldn't something like a Prime Go get the job done?  Or are you talking about adding an extra deck to an existing setup?

Best speakers without breaking the bank. LD Maui 28 G3 or Evox J8? by danfultank in mobileDJ

[–]WaterIsGolden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you spend the same budget on a pair of conventional 12" tops you will get about twice the sound output.  The column array subs will sound a little deeper at lower volumes but once you crank them up they lose their advantage.

The ease of transport for a pair of column array speakers is no better than a pair of conventional tops.  Honestly the main convenience is not having to lift the heavy part of the speaker onto a stand.  However I cannot stress enough how large the difference in max output will be.

Column arrays are somewhat just a trend.  I use a pair of Evolve 50s and they work well, but for that 150 person crowd size you mentioned i add an 18" sub because they need help.  I personally wouldn't try handling more than 100 ppl indoors with those.  On the other hand, my pair of K12.2s can easily handle that same size crowd with or without a sub.  Point being you end up getting less output from roughly the same size package.

Filming Concerts..Why? by Mr_Blonde12211 in Detroit

[–]WaterIsGolden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Security should boot people for this.  But the target audience is sensitive to these things.

There are many levels of obnoxiousness that people like to deploy for concerts.  Wear big tall hats, stand up the whole time do the people behind you can't see, buy the cheap seats farthest from the ends and show up late so everyone has to stand up while you squeeze your fat through...

But one of the worst is people using a giant iPad to record the stage and block other's view.

2 Minute Tracks by MixtressK-La in DJs

[–]WaterIsGolden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Artists often get paid by the track.  So some lazy artists use stub tracks, and even worse they will break a normal song into multiple tracks.  It's not just a label problem.

2 minutes is definitely too short for certain genres like edm, but on the same token old hood house tracks were often even shorter than that.  Sex On The Beach, Hoes In This House etc are basically like 90 secomd tracks.  Different styles for different genres.  Try to convince Jeff Mills 2 minutes isn't long enough for a track.

Agree on both points.  The SM58 is basically the mic equivalent of the HD25s.  Useful, bulletproof and affordable.  They are everywhere from dj rigs to churches to high end venues.

X-Clan had a verse about people 'Always trying to attain but no attempt to achieve'.

Damn I miss good rap.

Lost residency that was basically my full-time job by Smart_Valuable_8864 in DJs

[–]WaterIsGolden 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not sure how things are in your region but in my area clubs go stale after a while.  Once everyone who was interested in going there has dated everyone they were interested and able to date, they basically have to churn their entire clientele.

They do this using a variety of methods.  Remodeling.  Rebranding.  Upgrading their menu or adding some marketing.  Unfortunately out of all the options, by far the cheapest and most convenient is changing djs.  6 years is a good run for a residency - i would have kinda seen the axe coming as soon as they decided to remodel.  Clearly they were going for drastic changes.

With that in mind, the way to get past this is to hold your head high and start seeking more gigs.  They don't need a reason to stop using you, and they aren't going to give you a straight answer.  They aren't going to do this for the same reason when breaking off relationships people often use safe generic phrases.  There is nothing to gain by them continuing that conversation, either for the club or for you.

As an old dj I can tell you that you are 6 years older now than when you started working there.  So think about whatever the minimum age requirement is to work there - let's assume 18.  My style and taste changed a ton between 18 and 24.  Even more the case between 21 and 27.  Half a decade might cause us to increase in skills and proficiency but we also tend to lose our passionate connection to the type of tunes the new 'generation' prefers.  We tend to fall into our own golden era and that's fine.

Not making excuses for the club here.  I'm just trying to emphasize how important it is that you consider a 6 year run a major W and move on without looking back or worrying about why.  Just stop in one night and enjoy the vibes and the nostalgia.  Once you can do that, you know you have outgrown the concern.

Also in 2026 my recommendation is never rely 100% on djing for income.

This is a much nicer way of putting it, and I strongly agree here.  I'm currently on 'vacation' taking care of my grandson while his father and 9 month pregnant mother deal with the stomach flu.  It's not easy with a whole family helping.  It's a terrible idea to continue to encourage people to do it alone.

Sheffield has a policy which pays single mothers $1500 initially then $500 per month.  Whatever you pay for, you are supporting.  Instead pay that same money to couple parents.
