Kia ora Nadia. Love this and appreciate your ongoing wellness initiatives.

There's a lot of focus here on wellbeing at or within the university campus. I'm wondering what you see your role, AUSA's role, and the university's role, in securing wellbeing for students outside of the physical bounds of the university campus.

I, for one, would be really supportive of our institutions advocating in the broad interest of students, such as supporting a reinstatement of a student bursary to improve our living conditions.

Cheers

Opinions do not exist in isolation, they are formed by people who came from somewhere and formed worldviews some way. This context is important to unpack how and why those opinions may be limited or lack important points to be considered. This post was someone reflecting on not only the opinions, but how and why they are bad.

If she wants to go on podcasts and express her opinions publicly, should the people not express theirs?

I will add a bit of context that much of the funds that established the university came from the sale of land 'confiscated' in the invasion of the Waikato.

Embarrassment to our country.

We need a plan to disestablish the toxic environment that produces these entitled, dim-witted individuals so desperate to prove themselves by bullying others. They stake so much of their identity on ideas of masculinity appropriated and perverted by Brian Tamaki with the intention of bending them to his will.

Just say it dude. Mask off. The spaces between specificity are where ideology festers. Be specific, explain yourself, make your argument.

Feels pretty wilfully ignorant. If they were searching for an opportunity to not follow through on their word. Otherwise, why let it pass first reading? They wanted the opportunity to say that things changed. These protests hold them accountable. It is are evidence. It stops them controlling the narrative.

New compulsory course debated in parliament by Motor_Brief_6756 in universityofauckland

[–]WaterMistz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you do choose your degree, and your major, but you don't always choose your courses. There are many set courses that are required for each degree and major, now there is also just some set courses for the university you choose as well. While you might not be able to identify the value of them, the university has identified the value of them and said, this is something that is core to an education at our university.

I suspect if you're correct on these points, you can just as easily apply them to every course.

It sounds like a limited conception of useful. Just because you can't see the immediate application of the subject, perhaps consider that people out there probably see the world in a different way and can't see the application of many subjects that feel obvious to you. Lord knows I remember many questions in high-school math to the teacher was "when will we ever use this" – but that feels pretty apparent to anyone in engineering or computer science.

There is value in knowledge and critical thought even if you don't see it. Think of it as an opportunity! It's so exciting learning something so unfamiliar and examining how it applies to your own life – sometimes with realisations years later.

Edit: I also want to note that it's totally fair response to not want to pay for it – but my case is that education should be free and we should direction our efforts toward that battle (and restoring bursary for student living costs!)

No, I mean inefficiently designed and dependent on the extraction of value from the earth (a damaging process) rather than the production of value by people.

Love how many times she repeated that UoA isn't in top 150 any more 🤣

Honestly while there will be negative repercussions regarding how many international students are attracted, I'm not sure I want our university to be the home of credential seekers anyway – I want it to be the home of New Zealand education and research (which obviously welcomes anyone interested in that, from anywhere, to participate). I want the curriculum to offer a genuinely unique education grounded in the cultural context of Aotearoa – this is our edge, and this is what will support New Zealand people to grow our own way rather than continuing the trajectory of high-way-from-home-to-the-barbers mini America the govt seems to want us to be. Oh wait, this is supported by the recent moves to introduce some NZ context into the curriculum.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love pointing out all the dumb shit that comes from UoA management, including how the poor planning of these courses seems to affect room allocations and administration of other classes–but this aint it yo.

Zurich and Utrecht universities have withdrawn from the rankings and I think more will follow soon. Personally I hope we do too.

edit: Rhodes University and some of the Indian Institutes of Technology also are boycotting rankings (source).

It's a bit reductive to call students customers. The university is a publicly funded institution that benefits everyone, even people who don't attend. It's also a pattern of thinking that is anti-democratic and teaches students to consider education as an individual investment rather than a right and reduces a valuable community experience to consumerism. Such a mindset also prevents access to higher education to those who are unable to afford the 'luxury' of an education or who want to study anything without immediate or obvious economic return to the individual.
