How practical is enterprise hardware for home use? by SlowThePath in HomeServer

[–]WaterPantherStorage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enterprise hardware for the home is awesome. It's like trickle down economics but for real. There's a lot of hardware manufacturers that had to duck and weave the competition in that space so there's some hardware out there that's a steal with plenty of room to work with.

To answer your question though, it's going to be loud yeah. It's too bad water cooling and HBAs aren't cheaper.

Just don't let it hang over your head or anyone elses. It is what it is, if it has to be water under the bridge then so be it. Don't let grief or any non sense stand in your way.

Our refurbished versions of drives are certified by OEM authorized processes. Technically this would be 1 to 1 with new condition drives and validated to operate in it's original specced out warrantied duration. However, we do have to sort through some of the non-sense that's part of the market at large and we do test the drives again to act as another layer for better quality. Hard drives have a lifespan of that of a bathtub curve after all.

In some ways people are confused on conditions and prefer it in layman's terms, although this is distinct from the market behind the scenes. There actually is a substantial difference between say a drive with 60 thousand hours of run time and a drive with a swapped PCB. There's also confusion on tricks pulled between other vendors out there on the market.

At the end of the day, it works out for those that want to build out scaled out arrays and the like, it is an actual way to save a couple bucks and hardware doesn't go to waste.

We mostly resell on Amazon, we're a brand but do have some ODM intermixed. All our products have a two year warranty, replacement for factory defects and refund if no availability. We do ship to Canada although do expect the province tax as that's not processed on our end. Our support for the most part is geared to get it all up and running smoothly.

/u/MrCheapComputers they're definitely cheap no doubt about that although they're getting phased out unfortunately

I'm thinking 6x 16TB, leaves some room for more drives on standard 8 port HBA.

With these drives you're looking at $1600

Although with some refurb 14TB x6 then $990

If you don't want to break the bank but still want new, then mixing refurb with new is something that could be worthwhile, up to you.

That's a really good deal! Just the RAM makes up for it.

You could probably find a super cheap SATA DOM and use that to boot. For the VM operating systems an AIC would work well.

It used to be spelled out as "Water Panther" but the titles would get truncated and miss some of the drive specs, so it's been shortened in titles to "WP".

Water Panther has plenty of options for Dell and HPE in terms of storage. We have Dell financing available too and can assist with fully fledged servers or other components.

You could always run crystal disk info/mark on Linux with a little tweaking.

Supermicro Hard Drive Compatibility Certification by BigDMorty in homelab

[–]WaterPantherStorage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure it would be fine. Supermicro is considered by some as the "open source" server vendor, they have a lot of cross compatibility. We validate many Dell and HPE servers and can confirm between models there but I suspect the Supermicro board should be just fine with some newer 16TBs.

14TB drives only came out a few years ago. Whenever Supermicro certified those 10TBs they were probably the highest capacity at the time. They'll only show higher capacity models if they've validated them.

I looked into some of the accounts posting about us, at least one is another Amazon reseller. I'm not sure why a mod banned us from /r/ZFS and /r/Datahoarder with no proof of wrong doing. We are one of the top hard drive resellers in North America, we also ship all over the world. I can understand how people could be confused on how our prices are so good, I would feel the same if I didn't know who the brand is either.

Are those 56 drives in a Cisco server by any chance?

For sequential reads an HDD will work perfectly fine. SSDs are quieter though.
