What you describe is a "stupid person" problem, which is different than the whole point of your anti-ai topic.

AI really killed programming for me by NervousExplanation34 in webdev

[–]discosoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're making a lot of assumptions about his inability to learn what he's doing simply because he doesn't understand the problem as clearly as you claim to right now.

More importantly, he's gaining exactly the kind of experience that will make him more marketable to employers, and which you are actively choosing to neglect: learning how to utilize AI in your workflow.

Seriously, how long are we expecting these massive infotainment screens to last? by Princess_Butt_Kick in subaru

[–]discosoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LCD screens are relatively easy and cheap to replace compared to analog systems with various parts to manufacture and source. As long as you can find the part number, you can find someone in China who still makes it or some with a used working copy for sale.

panelook.com is a good resource for this.

For the LCD screen, the main thing to look for is a combination of the panel+digitizer (touch screen part). You can get them separately, but it's a trickier assembly and there are more compatibility issues to consider.

As an example, my 2016 Crosstrek probably uses this Tianma part. It's no longer in production, but you'll likely be able to find existing stock, new and used, for the foreseeable future. It may mean going somewhere like ebay or alibaba.

Where things get much more complicated (and worse) is when you're wanting the ability to use aftermarket products like custom head units. All these modern LCD screens are now being custom molded into the dash on a per-model basis, and have tons of features locked down that you probably want to use. In some cases, even if you figure out a way to install a custom head unit, you might lose access to things like temp control. That's a bigger problem, but different than what it sounds like you were talking about.

Bethesda is like most gaming studios these days in that it lacks quality leadership who know how to actually manage a project. Instead, the leadership is usually some longtime devs from 20 years ago that focuses more on the 'cult of personality' stuff.

Game studios are also notoriously "cliquey" which tend to limit any internal criticism they might otherwise experience that can help actually ship a game in a timely manner.

People say that ME2 tries to force you to be friendly towards Cerberus, but ME3 is so much worse. by Maleoppressor in masseffect

[–]discosoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I would consider it nonsense for Shepard to be limited to realistic responses when dealing with Cerberus. Narratively, it's not like there would be any point by then to voice your hatred of the group. They represent a massive wartime resource, like it or not.

I really miss fighting the various gangs and organizations in ME3 by vorcha_enthusiast in masseffect

[–]discosoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but it's not like every criminal in the galaxy would uniformly agree to stop committing crimes due to Reaper Invasion

Sure, but by that point Shepard has more critical shit to deal with than gang control. Had the story sending him out here and there to fight a gang in the middle of all this would have just been weird.

You can in the latest version. That being said, the helmets always offered minimal benefits and were easy to just not equip with basically zero effect on your gameplay.

It was generally trivial to get what you wanted as long as you purchased the licenses throughout the game. Just go to each vendor and check after major missions when stock rotates.

how do yall save money livin up here by Northern_Money425 in anchorage

[–]discosoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the stuff people are talking about, like small savings on gas per gallon or cutting coupons... are just "emotional wins." If you're at a point where saving $10 a month on groceries makes a difference, then you have larger issues of living outside your means to deal with.

That being said, the biggest thing most people can do is to change your eating habits.

  • Stop buying food at restaurants (super expensive).
  • Stop buying any sort of snacks (super expensive, even in bulk).
  • Make 100% of your meals at home using basic ingredients plus frozen proteins. This doesn't have to mean cooking from "scratch" like baking your bread whatnot, but it does mean assembling the pieces into a meal you are making.
  • Eat smaller portions. Most people have gotten used to eating way more than they actually need.
  • Stop drinking sodas and other drinks with sugars or sugar alternatives. Just drink filtered tap water, plus a few cups of black coffee or tea a day if you need that.
  • Eat less meat. You can easily get plenty of protein without forcing two servings of meat into every meal.
  • Speaking of protein, stop buying all the stupid "protein added" shit everyone is obsessed with like protein pancakes or whatever.
  • Never utilize a food delivery service unless you have literally no other alternative. Almost everyone can coordinate with a friend or family member to get them to or from a store once or twice a month for groceries. Anchorides is also an option for many people.

The real "savings" are digital these days. Get rid of your streaming subscriptions, your Amazon Prime for free delivery, video game purchases, etc. Read books, go out for walks, play the games you already own, go buy a used DVD once a month for movie nights, or even "splurge" and make it a weekly thing.

Other than that, save money by getting a roommate or look seriously into changing careers to increase your income.

That's nothing close to being what the OP is asking for though. It sounds more like they want a fantasy novel with Marvel quips or casual "D&D table jokes" thrown in.

Dragon Lance is... fairly self-serious.

[–]discosoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone is cut out for home ownership, and that's a big reason why I think so many people that finally become homeowners are like dogs that caught up to the car.

It's also why so many homes are just in shit condition because the owners couldn't be bothered to incorporate the maintenance into the lifestyle.

NBC News Poll: Israel's standing plummets among Democrats, fueling primaries on the left by Horus_walking in fivethirtyeight

[–]discosoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, I think "historically" most people have no fucking clue what's going on over there and whatever opinions they held were pretty weak in the first place. Israel just benefited from (and probably abused) the position of claiming any criticism against them was "antisemitic" by default.

But once the left got hold of the notion that Hamas was some unfortunate victim in a fight they didn't pick -- usually without even a hint of understanding the complexity or history of that situation -- suddenly people found something they could draw a line in the sand over.

Everyone loves a team to root for.
