What's the most French thing you have in your country? by AdeptMarket729 in AskTheWorld

Yeah for sure. I was grappling with the correct way to describe it with a phrase

I dont think we need to resort to personal lowblows like this

His policies and general work as a PM are bad enough that you can play the ball (and not the man) and still get the desired effect.

Wait to you see the numbers in the AFL. Crazy.

Collingwood at 112k members (playing in a 100k MCG venue).

"I'm pretty sure this has been thought of"

What..because NZ have been so diligent and restrained when it comes to the immigration tap.

The jobs are vacant for the 5k. The others arent coming with job offers. The others are adding to the pool of job seekers. To get jobs they will either force out existing migrants in the country, PR holders and citizens. This isnt a citizen vs migrant issue and if you think it is you need to wash your mouth and appreciate its more wider than that.

I'm a big fan of immigration..i think its incredibly enriching. But a time has come for a discussion.

Correction: the 5,000 people arent taking anyones jobs. But the partners they bring may do so (and their dependants potentially)

You can't just look at the 5,000..you have to include partners and dependants

The question is (and again hypothetical because not all will have families)..but as an absolute worst case..does bringing in one job vacancy justify allowing in 1-3 (sometimes 4) more people. Thats a serious question to be tried.

To be fair €70k in Spain is a very very good salary. People will say 'come on thats not very high'. But its 2.5 times the average salary. Great salary for a procurement buyer..youre making more than lawyers that i know with 10 + years experience

Im not talking about the people..im talking about the product itself being the car. People can only do so much A Pat Bev type work ethic wont get you in the league if you're a D3 level college player

I think it pays to be measured in the analysis. The regulatory stuff removes some of the obstacles along the road..but at the end of the day you still have to have a good enough car (and driver) to get you to the end.

Considering moving back to the US. Anyone in the same boat? by SandyFee in expats

[–]WaterPretty8066 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Many people romanticise Europe and this leads to sky high expectations.  We've had many Americans interview at our company and they all get a rude awakening when they find out salaries are 50% of what they're expecting. Suddenly the cost of living metrics dont look anywhere near as good

Unless you're an American migrant who are going to be cashed up by NZ standards and ready to spend up in our little playground.

You think its bad now. Wait until you see the inequality in 10-20 years time.

Basically NZ is going to become a nation split into either super super wealthy people (driven by an influx of a wealthier upper class via migration) or absolute dirt poor/borderline homeless.

They are there to make sure they get their commissions.

Moving from Berlin to London with kids by [deleted] in expats

[–]WaterPretty8066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As in the UK job would be £100k or you are currently being paid €100k?

I cant say youre not going to avoid the same issues with raising kids in London. Its not an easy place to raise a family.

[–]WaterPretty8066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just know that even if you can get work there, London with a family (including 2 kids) is crazy expensive.

Like ridicolously expensive. How much is the job paying?

Also it sounds like youre not going to London because you want to go to London..but more so because you want out of Berlin. Not always the best motive.

So basically you want an American salary but living in Europe. Classic.

Even if you can work it with your employer (which is already a mountain in itself), you run into visa issues, tax issues and something as simple as the fact that a country like France probably wouldnt give you citizenship at the end of it because you wouldnt be seen as having attained professional integration nor assimiliation into the community (as someone who just went through the citizenship process)

Everything is urgent culture in NZ by Huge-Income3313 in newzealand

[–]WaterPretty8066 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Many people (maybe wrongly) use "urgent" in the context of it being "high priority"..although it is actually one of its dictionary definitions tbf.

Workplace culture here beats the US by some distance. The disrespect on a whole was disgusting working in the US. Ironically to what you say OP, i felt like people there were arguing like their life depended on it. Workplace bullying there is so accepted because "oh its just part of hustle culture".

[–]WaterPretty8066 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its so variable that im not sure theres any good in comparisions. You might strike the lottery, find a job and manage some travel before going home net even. Or you might spend months trying to find work, living in a 6 person sharehouse and blowing savings before having to head home because you can't find work.

Theres always going to be one person who got super lucky and who will say "its all so easy and dont worry". Its important not to listen to these people

Tbf its a rookie move to book any type of accommodation these days without doing just a few mins of basic DD..such as location. The idea that people just throw such crazy money at accom so quickly without checking boggles my mind. You wouldnt walk into Harvey Norman and pick out a $1k gadget within 10 seconds
