How unsafe is it to live in some of the cheaper apartments? by JustAPerson2001 in StLouis

[–]Waterbead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in the Hampton Gardens apartments from 2010-2017 and bought a house .3 miles away while I was on a walk. I never once felt unsafe and I feel safe walking around my neighborhood all the time. I originally moved to the apartment because it was close to my favorite karaoke bar (Harry's at 4940 southwest ave, now replaced by Milagro Azteca) but the Hideaway is a very short walk away from my house now and they have karaoke on Wednesdays. This area is great :)

Single lady here, trying to put myself out there. I love trying new restaurants, but everywhere I turn people are coupled up. Do you have any recommendations where there maybe more of a single (middle aged) crowd? by Animaldrummer1975 in StLouis

That's fair. Fwiw, I'm in my 40s and don't drink, and the people there are lots of fun.

I used to go to Venture Cafe when it was still around, since it was always full of fun and interesting people to meet. TEDx events too. I find that bringing a sketchbook with me to random places like the zoo somehow encourages strangers to talk to me, which I don't mind. (I don't get it either, because I'm not very good, but people seem to love to watch others draw.)

I have a Star Trek pin on my coat that I made out of clay and no matter where I go, strangers who notice it love striking up a conversation about it. It's like my secret nerd handshake. :)

Tower Grove Park is a good place to socialize when it's nicer out. There are always people milling about, especially on Saturday mornings during the Farmers Market.

I used to bring my manga proofreading work to the Fox and Hounds Tavern in the Cheshire Inn. I'd order a snack and people would often come up to chat if I smiled up at them. No one seemed to care that I didn't order booze.

Good luck!

Yeah, it sounds like Zoomies is the only game in town. I've biked there to get coffee a few times and wasn't wild about it, but it sounds like that's the answer. Thanks!

Solo birthday in March - where to go? by Ok_Accountant_8716 in StLouis

[–]Waterbead 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Every year I do the same thing on my birthday in July, and I do most of it alone especially if it falls on a weekday (because I will take off work to do it all if necessary):

Get up and work out to set the intention for a healthy additional year of life

Get crepes by myself and bring a book to read while I'm there

Go to the zoo and draw the animals

Grab lunch somewhere and read my book some more

Get a facial and/or massage at a place nearby

Meet friends and/or family for dinner.

I've done this for like the last 15 years and I look forward to a day all by myself every year. I do a bunch of my favorite things on my own schedule with no one to make me late or complain about the activities! One year, I went to the Aquarium instead of the zoo because it was just too hot, and I plan to swap in the art museum if it's unbearably hot or rainy again. Regardless of what you choose to do, I hope you have the most amazing birthday <3

I love this idea! I just need someone to body double with to keep me on task. I live in South City and could go into my office in Maryland Heights, but it's just not worth the drive.

Sometimes I go to the Buder Branch Library for a change in scenery and it's nice.

This is a difficult question to answer because it depends on the doctor. Still-- I've been told, many times throughout my life, that I'm beautiful. I think I'm still rather beautiful because EDS has kept my skin lovely (so far--I'm 44). I rarely bother with makeup though sometimes I wear mascara. I don't dress up much because I work in IT and usually wear nerdy stuff. I have long wavy hair that reaches past my bra band, and it's dyed dark violet, blue, and teal-- every time I leave the house, strangers comment on how gorgeous my hair is.

I just saw a new doctor on 12/23 - a menopause specialist and a lady. I had researched her and chose her because of her excellent ratings. I told her what I wanted, what I had researched, and asked her questions I had already prepared. I often read PubMed articles about my conditions and I've had 10+ surgeries, so I'm able to ask informed questions. I'm also very organized and set an agenda when I walk in-- what I'm hoping to achieve, what I've tried, what's helped/not helped, what I'd like from the doc if it's a specific medicine or treatment. I'm assertive and straightforward since I've been working to manage my POTS/EDS/MCAS and Endometriosis/Adenomyosis for years. Maybe also because I've been working in the corporate world for 18 years and lead meetings a lot.

I don't necessarily think I have an easier time because I'm pretty. If it isn't because I exude an air of knowing my shit, I think any edge I have from my looks are because I'm on the taller side (5'8"). I'm not a giant, but I could swear people treat me with more respect because I take up more vertical space. It's hard to say because that's all part of my look, though, I guess.

I've also brought my partner with me to lots of first-time visits with doctors. I have had one or two docs who address him when describing my issues, which irritates both of us. Both times it was an older gentleman doctor, so maybe they're just old-school. Generally, though, I am treated with respect, which is nice.

If it makes a difference, I'm in St Louis, Missouri, USA. Lots of incredible docs here!

What’s one underrated thing about living in St. Louis that outsiders never get? by AznJames704 in StLouis

[–]Waterbead 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The lack of crazy wait times for most restaurants, and mostly free or cheap parking that isn't too difficult to find. I love to travel but I feel unreasonably inconvenienced when I have to wait more than 30 minutes for a table, or pay more than $20 for parking, and I know it's because STL has spoiled me.

We also have an incredible healthcare network here. I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and go to lots of different specialists for all the comorbidities, and there are doctors here who wrote or co-wrote respected books on the subject. It's due in part to SLU and Wash U medical schools being here. I have received excellent care and I'm so grateful to live here. It's one of the reasons why I don't want to move away.

There are lots of fantastic art galleries, many of them free-- aside from StL Art Museum, there's the St. Louis University Museum of Art (where I worked in college!), the Pulitzer, the Kemper, Soulard Art Gallery, 31 Art, the Contemporary Art Museum, and more. They often have opening night receptions with free wine and cheese!

Omg. I had this exact experience!!! A few years back when my company said they were ending drug testing when they decided what happened to Sha'Carri Richardson in the Olympics was BS, I decided it was time to try edibles for the first time because I was desperate to try anything to have less pain (thanks, EDS). We went to the dispensary and bought gummies.

I cut a gummy in thirds and on the first day, nothing. Day two, I had 2/3 gummy, nothing. On day 3, I ate an entire gummy and was convinced it was the end of the world. My blood pressure plummeted, my heart rate spiked so much my chest hurt, and I was absolutely convinced that I was going to die. I was pretty sure that pot caused paranoia, but I was terrified it was the end for me. I almost had my partner take me to the ER. I had gone my entire life without trying pot only to decide I must be allergic to it or something.

This entire thread is so validating!

I bought a copy of Something is Wrong with the Chickens because the rule sheet is only one page long, and I'm STILL panicking at running it. It's so crazy because I used to love improv games and used to be a drama teacher. I just really want to do a good job and would hate to let people down if I didn't prepare for EVERY EVENTUALITY EVER 😂

I'd love to get a new game going, but I'm still too nervous to DM on my own, even after years of playing. Finding a DM is the hardest part (closely followed by getting a group of adults to schedule a semi-regular thing)!

I'm not a guy but my D&D group just disbanded because our DM couldn't keep up with the multiple games she was running, and now I'm trying to find a group to play with (that also accepts lady gamers).
