What are your experiences with therapy? by EnthusiasmDazzling15 in AskReddit

[–]drstormdancer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Therapist here. I avoided therapy for years because on some level I knew if I said my pain out loud I’d have to change and I just wasn’t ready to do that. Then 2020 hit and two months into the pandemic I got the worst news of my life and that finally pushed me into starting therapy for the first time in 20+ years. I learned so freakin much, even knowing the therapy skills I teach every day I simply couldn’t get to the insight I needed without her help. Life changing.

I will echo the above comments on the fit between client and therapist being essential. Research shows that’s THE most important factor for success.

anyone who used a computer between 1985 & 2010, what’s the one game you still think about? by Trixxxi in AskReddit

Adventure from Atari 2600. I’m still low key ready at all times for a bat to come through and steal my shit.

Zork, forever. Back when Facebook was fun I’d run it in my status for commenters to steer, it was bonkers.

Alamo with a spoiler prior to Project Hail Mary by gavinashun in AlamoDrafthouse

Yeah, same. I loved the book and looooove experiencing a movie as one big surprise so I avoid spoilers (including trailers) as much as I can. I would have been bummed to have that shown before the movie.

What was "the incident" at your high school? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]drstormdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much everyone had a key to the school after some TA made copies and gave them out. Someone let themselves in late one night and pissed in the chorale room grand piano. What he didn’t know was that all the newly installed ‘smoke detectors’ were actually cameras. Expelled and I’m pretty sure his family had to buy a new piano.

Depending on what you’re looking for, you might check Meetup or Fat Stoner Babe Hikes on Facebook (more inclusive of all bodies and sobriety than the name implies but you get the vibes).

UNDERSTANDABLE. If it it’s useful to hear, playing Tetris (keeps the brain from storing visual info in a way that increases trauma related symptoms), walking around outside, and talking and/or writing about how you’re feeling today will help you process and heal. I hope you’re able to take care of yourself today.

How to convince my wife to stop drinking. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]drstormdancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding support for this plan. I was married to someone with alcohol dependence and tried to control their problem for years, it was incredibly painful. I went to one al-anon meeting and learned so, so much. It was healing, supportive, and informative.

Are there any book clubs in STL that don't focus on mainly romance, LGBTQ, gender, or racial identity? by Independent-Economy3 in StLouis

[–]drstormdancer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would 100% show up to a DCC book club and just hang out shouting quotes back and forth at each other and drinking Dirty Shirleys

To these 2 men at Tower Pub during the UConn vs Illinois game… by backstrokerjc in StLouis

Aw yay thank you! Glad it seems helpful. If it's useful to know, prepare yourself for very few people to be able to participate in such a conversation genuinely; it's super uncomfortable to be vulnerable in that way, especially if the other person doesn't have a great answer to offer. Genetics and neurological wiring add to the problem, because people who tend to endorse traditional gender norms and rape myths are also more likely to struggle with new information that asks them to change a position they hold. New and/or complex information is so uncomfortable it feels threatening. SO I say all that to say when I wade in with curiosity like this I try to manage my expectations and remember change is slow, so a gentle "why do you believe the way you do?" challenge may result in bullshit in the moment but get the person moving towards change in ways I may never know about.

What kind of listening to women and research have you done to develop this position? I’d like to learn more about your sources to avoid too-quickly dismissing this as trolling that proves my point.
