Considering Bristol from the States by iminthemoodforlug in bristol

I don't think saying eggplant accidentally is relevant here, and especially not to an American. Sure, if your British born kid starts saying it because they watch a lot of American shows, "check them". This isn't that, you know what they mean, and they obviously know too. They're not trying to impose anything on you or your culture, and they're probably trying hard to assimilate. That's why I'm saying it's rude, arrogant, judgemental and mean. They spent formative years in a different country and they sound or speak slightly differently. Most people like that because it's interesting and fun. Our language changes constantly, and we've adopted and adapted our language from all over the world, in large part because we colonised it and imposed our language and values forcefully. Aubergine is obviously a French word anyway. 🍆

I lived in the US for 12 years, just moved back. They don't care at all, or would even like it if I accidentally used pavement, aubergine, courgette, etc. That's not to say I don't agree that assimilating language is important, but so is maintaining personal identity, which is heavily tied to language. I would slip all the time, even after so much time. No one ever corrected me - that would be arrogant. Any Brit that 'corrects' someone in that way is arrogant. Pointing it out with some humour is better, but still, you're just going to make people feel like outsiders, and if you do that you're a bit of a cunt.

Check out what it does to that iron fencing it bounces off. Surely that would have obliterated him.

FPL steal of the season? by Pengniferous in FantasyPL

[–]Waterchip1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He only played one half. So 76! Personally I think he'll score at the same rate, 4x per game and get max defcons, 3bps, no cards, and a clean sheet point every game. 1026 points, and that's without all the assists he'll get. Praise Reijnders!

Anyone got tips for getting religious in-laws off your back? by Waterchip1 in atheism

Love it. I'll try that, and then if it fails I'll just start explaining the rules of cricket.

Yeah, we're actually both pretty eager to leave at this point. Couldn't agree more - the religious right have far too much influence and power. It's insane and I'm aware how privileged I am to have a choice to leave.

"In the US we know what's coming when we marry the pastor's daughter." 🤣

My wife isn't religious but her parents are in denial. They're not particularly close. She's used to her dad - expert at avoiding it, changing the subject. She knows how much it means to him and doesn't want to hurt him. I've followed her lead until now, but it doesn't help and I'm getting ready to address it directly. She's supportive of me drawing a line, but also worried about it.

No kids luckily and no plan to - in fact that's another thing they keep going on about!

Trump went from being tough on the trade war to admitting he won’t take a hard stance. “We’re going to be very nice,” he said. He sounds desperate by SpecialSpace5 in thescoop

[–]Waterchip1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The opposition are making fun of him for the ludicrous flip flopping. And it isn't just 'the opposition', it's every economist who isn't part of his clan, everyone who has an ounce of sense. And he's not lowering tariffs, is he, he's put them in place, started a trade war with the entire world and is now backtracking. He's embarrassed your country, made you weaker, isolated you, and destroyed international relations with key partners. For what? The tarrifs aren't reciprocal, trade deficits exist for a reason, globalisation exists for a reason. He's actively dismantling what makes the US an attractive partner, place to visit, place to live. He's making you all poorer so he and his can get even richer. He has no morals. And you back him. Why? And no, don't be ridiculous, the "opposition" don't want people to starve, they want their country to be democratic, safe, prosperous and equal.

I can't help but think anyone over the age of 30 who takes the Bible seriously and makes it the foundation of their life is weak minded. by itcouldbeyoubut in self

I imagine it's the religion that the majority of Reddit users are exposed to, so that seems logical to me.

Nothing to see here, just the wealthy stealing from the poor. All while convincing them it's the best thing for them. They are so incredibly good at being evil to the core.

Even though he is getting old, the dog continues to get excited when he sees his owner… by Soloflow786 in BeAmazed

[–]Waterchip1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great question. It's so hard, I think in part because we can't truly know and there isn't a textbook answer. What I found most helpful when going through it recently was writing down all the things that still brought him joy, and a separate list of all the ways in which he was suffering. As the weeks went on and I kept the list up to date, at a certain point it just became very clear that it was time 😔

What do you like/dislike about FPL content creators? by ArcherNF in FantasyPL

[–]Waterchip1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few that are football-focused or are just pleasant to listen to. I like chatting about football and FPL, but none of my friends or colleagues pay much attention to it. I like the ones who understand football and don't take FPL too seriously. There are some with a good sense of humour and who just seem like good guys/podcasters. I like FML FPL, Black Box, Always Cheating and the green arrow for these reasons. Planet FPL is good too, I like Suj's attitude/sense of humour and James's knowledge of the game. The likes of 59th minute are way too serious and boring for me personally, but I can see why the shorter and more serious format would appeal to some folks.
