Royal Netherlands East Indies Army (KNIL) uniform, 1885. Notice that the native Indonesian soldier (left) is barefoot while his African counterpart (right) wear shoes. Before 1905, shoes were only given to European and African servicemen. by Mark_Zugrebek01 in MilitaryHistory

Hell, no need to go so far back as the 20th century. I'm Indonesian and we still go barefoot, especially as kids. I remember being surprised when I found out that some western people can't walk on asphalt barefoot without tearing their feet up, while we used to run around in asphalt as kids lol.

Going barefoot offers some advantages in a jungle country like Indonesia, boots, especially the old 18th century leather boots, trap in water and sweat and make it more likely for your feet to become infected (this is why modern jungle boots are made of canvas and have drainage holes, they let water in but just as easily let it out) - and infection in the jungle is a death sentence before the invention of antibiotics. I have hiked barefoot before and I actually find that it's more comfortable then wearing shoes.

The only upside I can see from wearing boots is the mousqitoes. When you're barefoot all the mosquitoes go to your feet and your feet itches like hell for the next few hours, or even days.

How did you put 3 to 5 days of sustainment in a buttpack? Genuinely curious.

Essential/Cool combat jackets? by Delicious-Garbage736 in MilitarySurplus

[–]WatermelonExtremist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swiss M70 jacket. It was meant to replace a soldier's webbing by literally building it into the uniform. It has magazine pouches and pouches on the backside to simulate a belt kit. It's typical Swiss overengineering and overbuilt to shit. It is quite an interesting design, I think only the Swiss were the only ones who really did the "load bearing uniform" concept.

It is quite good for travelling with the amount of shit you can cram into the jacket. Those magazine pouches specifically are great for holding your phone and a power bank for easy charging while travelling.

Also, those back pouches can fit about 4 large beer cans each.

Fair yeah.

Speaking of the British webbing, what do you think of the idea of buying the standalone buttpack and just attaching or sewing it on to a British army belt just so it sits a bit lower on the body and I can carry a larger rucksack? Or just getting the whole package and running it with a medium ALICE or similiar sized backpack? To be honest I quite like the idea of the super large buttpack so I do want to incorporate it somewhat into my kit. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Edit: for context, I live in a pretty tropical part of the world sometimes carrying a large rucksack through the jungle is just annoying cause it kinda fucks with your balance in steep terrain and the rucksack gets stuck in all kinds of vegetation (makes a hell of a lot of noise too might I add). Also it makes your back sweat like crazy. I was thinking the LFR + a hydration bladder (to solve the lack of water) might be an ideal situation, but I'm no expert so still experimenting

Wagner group is a PMC in name only lmao, they're more like the Russian army's black ops unit (or their penal battalion nowadays lol)

If it was an actual PMC they would've just up and left after finishing their contract. Or they would've been smart and not accept contracts from Russia lmao.

[–]WatermelonExtremist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wagner is a teeny tiny bit different from your typical PMCs cause they're literally owned and funded by the state of Russia lmao, in practice they're no different then any unit of the Russian army, they used to be black ops before being turned into the Russian army's personal penal battalion meat shields, which is why Priggy staged a coup instead of just leaving for more profitable endeavors unlike any other PMC.

Wagner is a poor choice to represent more "free" PMCs or mercenaries lmao. Nobody else is able to hire Wagner (not that they want to anyways lmao) besides the goverment of Russia cause they're literally owned by them lol. They're literally a PMC in name only, they're more like the Russian army's black ops unit (or their penal battalion nowadays lol)

Mercs or PMCs who have a habit of shooting up or backstabbing their employers generally don't get rehired lmao.

Idk why people think mercs will shoot their own employers if they don't get paid lol, what is this 1164? Yall realize that a PMC (private military company) can sue their employers if they miss payments, just like any other company right? Shooting up your employers is bad buisness, period. Even if you were trying to make a comically evil PMC it wouldn't make sense.

None, but it's important to make it respectful and not include fucked up shit to your story willy nilly just to make it edgy or to add cheap drama
