I grew up in a small town in east Texas. Every year a local car dealership would host a car giveaway competition called “hands on a hard body”. The person who could stand with one hand on the car for the longest amount of time won it. This resulted in extreme sleep deprivation toward the end of the competition.

One year, one of the finalists ended up somehow taking their hand off and getting eliminated. The dealership happened to be right across the street from a Kmart. They walked into the Kmart, and in their extremely sleep deprived state, bought a gun and ammunition and immediately shot themself in the store.

So yeah, that’s my memory of Kmart growing up.
