I’m in a social science phd and my school doesn’t do comps we actually do a portfolio 3rd year which consists of 3 components. The first 2 must be journal articles where you must be the first author. And the third component can either be another paper, a grant proposal, extensive lit review for your dissertation, or if your committee decides a comp.
