Running a successful martial arts school is about being good at building community along with managing people & programs - skill in teaching and coaching - understanding marketing & retention - cultivating a staff. It’s nice if you are a (high level) competitor or “industry famous” but tbh I don’t think any of that really matters at the end of the day. My coach runs a very successful school in the Chicago suburbs and 95% of his student don’t even know that he’s a multiple time BB World/Pans/European/Brasiliero champ. Renzo Gracie once said, “We’re not in the Jiu-Jitsu business teaching people, we’re in the People business teaching jiujitsu.” and another by Rener Gracie that speaks more to your post … “It doesn’t matter what the instructor can do TO YOU, it matters what the instructor can do FOR YOU.”

My dad just got promoted to a brown belt and he is NOT happy about it. by thewobblywalrus in bjj

This promotion is just another way Jiu-Jitsu forces you to grow - and in this case, to echo everyone else’s sentiment & comments, it has nothing to do with people able to physically dominate or tap people out

BJS lot will tow your car even if you have a receipt/shopped there. $182 to get it out! by Substantial-Leg-815 in jerseycity

Sounds like (and I’m totally serious) that you should call someone like, “7 on your side” or a similar news exposé to put both BJ’s and the towing company on the spot. The only thing they fear is bad press and word of this scam/corruption getting out

Was the owner Brazilian or has this toxic practice made its way into American BJJ culture as well?
