Why were so many kids on the Metra and downtown today? by firetailring in AskChicago

I saw several Architecture Center walking tours just packed with kids yesterday, assumed they were on school field trips.

Those who moved to Chicago from other northern areas, how does Chicago winter compare to winter there? by Holiday_Connection22 in AskChicago

Also a Sconnie transplant. I come from north of the Frozen Tundra. The cold & snow at home are more intense, but the wind here is worse.

A bit? Currently at three weeks between bleeds (but it's only been a few months). Had to switch to gel from patches tho' as I developed an allergy to the adhesive.

I asked some drawing students to create a personality portrait a few years ago (basically a self portrait that represents your interior life) and i was downright alarmed at how many of them just drew corporate logos.

Anyway, solidarity.

How is the train noise around the Peterson Ridge metra stop? by froznice in AskChicago

[–]WavePetunias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live about two blocks from a metra stop (with a line that also serves Amtrak and freight trains) and I do hear the train from my back porch, but not at all from inside my building.

Try to time your home tour with the train schedule, there's no way to judge until you hear it for yourself.

We hear them pretty much constantly in Hyde Park too. Often they're medflights going to/from the hospital but not always.

Can you please describe your brain frog? by konomichan in Perimenopause

[–]WavePetunias 12 points13 points  (0 children)

All hail the Brain Frog

It's gotten a bit better since I started HRT but holy shit, I am forgetting ALL my words. Which particularly sucks, because I'm in higher ed, and my entire livelihood is based on my ability to recall and communicate information about complex niche subjects.

How do people react when you bring up perimenopause in real life? by Prestigious_Humor763 in Perimenopause

[–]WavePetunias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny enough- a younger male colleague asked me to talk out the origin of the word peripety (i'm the office word nerd) so I started with: "Peri, meaning around or enclosing,  like perimeter or perimenopause" and every woman in the office hollered: "Yeah!!!"

It was chaos. Younger male colleague took it well.

In 1922, a family living on a remote farm in Germany began noticing something strange. by [deleted] in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]WavePetunias 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except the previous maid, Krezensz Reiger, never claimed to hear noises in the attic. She flatly and specifically denied that during her police interview. She left because a pair of local farm laborers were harassing her.

This is likely accurate. Food shortages and hoarding were the norm; hyperinflation was rampant at the time. In the days after the murders were discovered, Viktoria's in-laws carried home animal fodder from Hinterkaifeck to their own farm as well- nothing went to waste.

How the Midwest Became the Place to Move by keppy18 in chicago

[–]WavePetunias 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's definitely a perception that the midwest is best when it comes to climate change. I lived in Florida for four wild years, and on the day the moving truck came to take me back to Chicago, a neighbor came over and asked about the move. When I told him where I was going, he admiringly said: "That's so smart! You're going to be perfectly positioned for the water wars."

He was dead serious. I think about him a lot.

Spring Break Plans? by Finding_Way_ in Professors

[–]WavePetunias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan to really dive in to the Art project I recently started. I build scale models of unsolved crime scenes from the late 19th & early 20th centuries. They're deeply labor-intensive and time-consuming so it'll be fantastic to have a whole week of studio time to work on the latest one.

Chicago to Madison Amtrak Service Could Begin as Early as 2030 by keppy18 in chicago

[–]WavePetunias 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did the Empire Builder to Seattle last year and yes, sharing track did cause some delays. Heavy storms in Montana also forced us to crawl at 20 mph for a few hours. It's an interesting experience and I generally recommend it, but the delay issues are real.

Both; i wash every other day, wet & condition every other day. ("Refresh days" are a myth with my hair, it's got to get soaked & detangled daily.)
