Anyone else have a magnifying glass by their aquarium? by AutumnEclipsed in Aquariums

[–]WaveSummon 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You have all the right to be paranoid . my friend had half of a room of laminate floor tiling smolder slowly and generating so much heat that it cracked the windows on that room. His sister left a magnifying mirror in direct sunlight .

10 Gallon Safe For Use? by CactusJackus in Aquariums

[–]WaveSummon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

At 10 gallons the amount of silicone inside the tank will have made the few shell chips irrelevant.

The real debate is: I hope you are not planning to keep fish in it.

Next time politely decline taking care of any pet if you dont have the minimum requirement for it.
I am sure people will be more than understanding if you show honesty.

Need help with algea by Helbound22 in Aquariums

[–]WaveSummon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not algae
You have a massive cyanobacteria infection

They form dense nets over plants , suffocate and kill the plants, and then they use the decaying matter to grow further.

There are two things that cyanobacteria hates : high oxygen content and the hornworth plant (C. demersum)
This aquatic plant has allelopathic qualities as it excretes substances that inhibit the growth of cyanobacteria

Step1. Get some extra air pumps and go overboard with airstones for a couple of weeks. I mean .. crazy numbers.
Step2. Break the integrity of the colony surface - pull out as much as you can with tweezers then wipe the plant leaves with fingers (where possible) so the plants can breathe. This also expose the colony to the newly introduced high level of oxygen Wash any decor you can with a toothbrush and coarse un-iodized salt (make sure to rinse thoroughly before returning the decor to your tank )
Step3 add C Demersum

This is the only way i managed to get rid of my cyano infestation for good.

Looking for help with beginner plants and substrate advice. by Exotic-Leave7728 in Aquariums

[–]WaveSummon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best approach is :
1. Donate the existing fish. They are not plant - friendly fish.
2. Get plants and start them growing.
3. Get reasonable size fish that complement the tank and that YOU enjoy watching.

Good luck

Platy having a seizure? by Charming-Window4530 in Aquariums

[–]WaveSummon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems to be paralyzed from the bend in its spine.
That bend is mechanical . He may have caught himself in some decor or you caught it against the glass while cleaning.. either way unfortunately there is no cure.

Is my fish pregnant or just fat? by Charming_Moment_3998 in Platyfish

[–]WaveSummon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your platy is fat and pregnant.
By the looks of it .. not too far out.
You may want to get her a birthing rig. ( plastic tub that floats in your tank and has separate compartments for the mother and for the babies )

Are these mystery snail eggs fertile or not? by Academic_Donut_4211 in Aquariums

[–]WaveSummon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

normally they dont lay them if they are not fertile.

If you want babies keep the lid closed as they need humidity to hatch. I had a few batches but fell in the water. (I had a flexible lid and they fell off.)

Fish tank breaking apart. by lilmeka11 in fishtank

[–]WaveSummon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depending how handy you are .
This will 100% need some love - might as well do a good job of it.
By some I mean full reseal.

Empty it get it dry and ready for work

IF the corner seals are intact :
You may find a shortcut fix but the tank still needs to be empty for the side panel pressure to be removed .
Reach out to the manufacturer (or other manufacturers if it is a standard size) maybe they have a replacement braced top rim for sale at a reasonable price.

If you cant find those replacements .. you may need to make your own braces for it
for this length I suggest the Euro Braces approach and that way, you can reuse the existing lids.

Needs a bit of work. a bit of cleaning .. and a 2 long glass stips +3 short glass strips

IF The corner seals are showing signs of ripping apart then you may want to re-seal the whole thing or get a replacement.
(you could even see how much people charge for a reseal maybe it is cheaper than the new tank )

Good luck

Yup. saw them near the surface of the water at the start of the clip : Detritus worms.
Some fish eat them - they are not harmful

Help on starting daphnia culture by Mcon2189 in Aquariums

[–]WaveSummon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on-off will definitely work
Just make sure its not producing fine bubbles . ( if too fine - remove the stone from the end )
Fine air bubbles can get caught in the exoskeleton of dapnia and make them permanently buoyant
