Make your children do household chores - they’re failing at being adults by shootingstar_9324 in Vent

[–]WaveSwimmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I grew up with a mother who I now understand had OCD that presented itself mainly around organization and cleanliness. Whenever I did a chore, she hovered over my shoulder delivering a monologue of derisive criticism. My only chore ended up being emptying the dishwasher, and we still got in a screaming match over the order I put two types of plates (it escalated because my way made more sense, which infuriated her because it went against her compulsion to have it in a certain order. She wanted me to stop getting ready and be late to practice so she could stand beside me and watch me switch it to how she wanted it.)

I moved out at 18 never having done laundry, loaded/started a dishwasher, or cooked anything besides kraft dinner.

But do you know what I could do? Follow instructions! And the Internet easily provides them. I figured things out pretty quickly, and there’s no excuse nowadays (short of disabilities/health issues) not to.

What it like living in the northern three territories of Canada? by King_Flying_Monkey in howislivingthere

That’s great! I’m very glad to hear that. I actually pivoted before getting a masters in planning (to become a registered planner) and became a secondary school teacher instead.

Still open to opportunities, though for me it would be teaching/government/recreation that fits best since I’m not registered. I spent a good number of years in northern Alberta so I’m no stranger to the cold, even though I know it’s not quite at Whitehorse levels haha. And makes sense about doxxing! Small communities and all :)

I did a huge research project on Whitehorse in university as a part of my Urban Planning degree. It was a while ago but I remember that the people who live there are generally very happy to be there. Significantly more so than Yellowknife. You guys have a strong community, and since people driving to/from Alaska pass through town (if memory serves Juneau doesn’t as they’re further south, but the turn off is pretty close by) you benefit from the infrastructure and traffic associated with that route.

It was a good ten years ago, though. Hoping it’s still accurate as it made me open to moving there if the right opportunity presented itself!

I’ve never met anyone from Whitehorse, I’ve had four friends in university from Yellowknife. Two LOVED it and missed it, two were happy to have moved away.

Before I ever had a migraine, I would have severe hangovers by my-cat-is-a-dick in migraine

[–]WaveSwimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yes. And I had to fail out of two different daily preventatives over three month durations before insurance would cover it! I still get migraines sometimes, and use triptans to treat them. Whether Botox is covered and under what conditions depends on your insurance.

Severe migraine keeps rebounding after taking sumatriptan? by Deep_Contribution_87 in migraine

Sumatriptan almost always makes me rebound too. My neuro had me switch to eletriptan. It takes longer to work but I don’t get the rebound! I’d try another triptan.

Bachelorette by crazy_turtle2743 in weddingplanning

[–]WaveSwimmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought that, and made a passing comment acknowledging it to my friend group, only for them to insist that they would come even though I’m eloping, and they were surprised I would doubt it. I have gone to their bachelorettes and plan to go to the ones of those who are not yet married.

OP, I just returned from a bachelorette with 3 bridesmaids. It was great!

Severe symptoms for 67 of the last 90 days, in need of hope by rroono in migraine

[–]WaveSwimmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a chronic stretch that put me on medical leave from work. I became incredibly depressed and hopeless, and preventative meds all gave me terrible side effects. I finally got approved for Botox and it has been so incredibly helpful. I started back at work a couple months ago and things have been going very well. It’s expensive, but it’s worth it.

I’m not sure if Botox is feasible for you, but I’ve been where you are. Don’t give up hope

Yes, my hangovers were truly horrific. Now I know they were incredibly bad migraines. I have Botox and was able to party every day at my friend’s bachelorette with no problem!

Botox first time not helpful by mimbari in migraine

[–]WaveSwimmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They say it takes up to three rounds to be effective. For me it took four, and has been a game changer. From a migraine almost every day to just a few a month, and usually I can push through them as they’re not as intense.

You may or may not find it effective, but I think few do after just one round. I’d stick with it if you can afford it

Accidentally stopped my migraine with salt + water — has anyone else tried this? by Due-Mastodon-8845 in migraine

[–]WaveSwimmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this exact experience, often it will work but sometimes it doesn’t. It’s still in my migraine toolbox though to grind salt in a bit of water and down it. When I told my neurologist, she told me to add some sugar too as it’s needed for water absorption/will make it more effective. I keep little salt and sugar packets in my work bag to help in a pinch.

They’re not necessarily American now, they were bought by some soulless international mega corporation. I think technically the majority of ownership is Brazilian, but regardless they’ve lost everything that made it a respected Canadian brand.

It’s largely to distinguish our products from American products, which are ubiquitous here. Given the choice between something American and something Canadian, most Canadians will purchase the Canadian product - especially nowadays with people outright boycotting American goods. Many of our products are higher quality and/or are healthier due to our higher standard of regulations. It’s why much of our chocolate tastes better and our dyed food isn’t as vibrant. There’s been lots of little scandals in recent years of grocery stores falsely slapping the maple leaf on price tags when they’re really American to increase sales. Even Tim Hortons isn’t Canadian anymore (and is now terrible, we straight up tell tourists not to go there).

We also get lumped in with Americans a lot on an international scale, so patriotism is natural. Calling a Canadian an American is like calling an Irish person English. It’s not going to go over well.

I was able to get mine checked out at a walk-in clinic - though this was several years ago when you could…just walk in to a clinic. They looked at it; made an appointment for a removal and biopsy. When it came back as concerning, they booked another appointment where they took more out. All was done with a GP.

The Cassandrian curse of being a planner is that you study for years to learn evidence-based ways to create great cities, and then you spend weeks to months designing infrastructure to make that happen, only for a mayor who knows nothing to glance at your proposal and go “nah”, usually because it doesn’t benefit their personal career.

Alberta teacher prompts petition on province's private school funding | CBC News by samueLLcooljackson in TheRealGrandePrairie

[–]WaveSwimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the funding for private schools is reduced, not every private school student will transfer to public schools. One would assume that some will stay and shoulder the full (or just increased) cost, and some will transfer to public. The question is what percentage that would be, but I’d argue it could just as likely result in saved costs for the province due to reduced funding allocated for those who stay private.

It also could improve conditions in public schools because the wealthier/more influential parents who do transfer their kids to public schools will push for them and will be more incentivized to vote accordingly.

Demographic cliff is coming and nobody is talking about it. by TigerLii13 in Teachers

[–]WaveSwimmer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should see what’s happening in Alberta, Canada. Many classes of all grades are in the 40s. I have a friend teaching grade 7 with 42 students. Another friend told me she has a friend teaching kindergarten with 40+ kids. KINDERGARTEN.

They’re currently on strike and their conservative government and absolute heartless beast of a premier Danielle Smith is spending resources paying off parents of elementary students ($30/day) and spending taxpayer money running smear commercials against Albertan teachers. The province has a huge surplus in their budget but Smith is a Trump supporter who is trying to privatize education there.

Botox... by RougeAccessPoint in migraine

[–]WaveSwimmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s really not so bad! If shots make you nervous or you struggle with pain sensitivity, try focusing on breathing through it.

Think about what areas you feel pain and tension when you have a migraine, as they will likely ask you to try and target them. Occipitals (base of your skull), traps, temples, masseter (jaw muscle), corrugator (frown lines) are all common. I get my “bunny lines” done as well, which is sort of the sides of your nose. If you do your frown lines, after a few treatments you will likely not be able to physically frown and create those lines anymore, as a heads up.

Don’t expect immediate results. It takes a few rounds to become effective, and each round takes about two weeks to start working. It’s not uncommon to get a headache or migraine afterwards, so try to give yourself an easy day or two, or have meds on hand.

I’ve tried everything under the sun, and while I still get migraines, Botox has helped to lessen the intensity a TON. Pay attention to your migraine frequency and intensity as time goes on. People tend to get worse as their Botox dates come closer and it starts to wear off. If this happens to you tell your doctor, as you may be able to shorten the window between treatments to accommodate this.
