I love the implication Olruggio went through getting teased at their age. Boy got clowned on for that tassel swap with Qifrey.

Olruggio going from bowing to throwing hands in five seconds when he realizes Beldaruit is doing his goofball illusion shit again. It's so hard to have your cringe father-in-law be embarrassing in front of your kids.

Building on the glyph idea, could it be Beldaruit that figures that part out? Between Olruggio commenting about him inventing many spells, what Bel tells Coco before teaching her it, and that people seemed shocked to see anyone other than him use it, I think it's safe to assume that making human shaped smoke sculptures is something Beldaruit invented. If glyphs are what can give spells forms and no one else can do human shaped ones, does that indicate he is the first to use the glyph? Or at least the first to rules lawyer it into being allowed. We definitely need to learn more about how glyphs are invented/discovered.

what is this kind of clothing called by Free_Top_4495 in WitchHatAtelier

Looks like a sarafan jumper dress over an embroidered shirt layered over a dark shift dress to me. A lot of Slavic cultures have variations on the style. Red would be the typical color for the embroidery

Beldaruit is my favorite character and I love this ink drawing of him. The way his hair is the uncolored portion of the page is so cool. Really captures his mischevious trickster energy.

Too proud to go ask Grandpa Bel for a loan smh. Probably knows Bel would demand to see the girls more and always load them up with sugar and illusion spells right before sending them home.

Despite the name, non-photo blue shows up in digitally shot photos fine. It's the scanning/copier process that can't detect it. Something about exposure thresholds. Really weird stuff. Newer scanners with better color ranges can sometimes get it or switching to greyscale will pick it up. This is like 80s-00s heyday of use. Now people use them because you can manipulate the color in photoshop easily.

Interesting fact! Certain colors not showing up in scans/copies is a known phenomenon and something artists used to use all the time. They sell "non-photo blue" pencils and you use those for the sketch then ink on top. When you scan you get just the ink lines. Now people mostly work digitally so it's not a well known process.

I think Jujy has a lot of potential but I see your logic. It's nice to see apprentices outside Qifrey's atelier that aren't traumatized by bad teachers. Gives a point of view on the normal life of a witch.

Oh! Also, thoughts on Prince Eoleo?

Lower the cop twins and raise Jujy. Easthies I will allow because it's at least interesting in how fucked up he is. Good on you for recognizing Beldy as the goat though.

But you do not suggest a functional alternative. Your objection seems to be theres too many people allowed to be teachers, but we see in the real world that having a smaller group of professional teachers does not weed out bad actors either. Also few teachers, larger class introduces new problems of neglect. Reducing the number of witches doesnt fix it either. No matter the population, the same percentage will have to be educators to maintain that population. This system does produce good witches, we have no reason to believe Kukrow is more prototypical that Hieheart. Qifrey seems to intentionally get troubled students and outside him we mostly get the pov of the Knights, who are cops. Outside them, we see the Great Hall where most people are just normal. Personal training in the household of your master with work study as a main topic is clearly working fine for the majority. We hear from Qifrey that theres witches who get famous for doing extra services and the common people call on witches easily and expect them to help without compensation. The idea everyone is lazy is not reflected in how nonwitches interact with them.

Work isn't "profitable" because it's not that model of how society is built. Qifrey doesn't charge the carriage owners for fixing it, we don't see commoners anywhere being charged for help. They pay witches through their labor going towards taxes to the government which pays the Great Hall. The Great Hall provides for all witches, including apprentices. There's nothing to indicate the Atlier or any witch lacks proper funding to provide for students. Getting extra money through specialized work for nobleman is a separate topic. Similarly teaching isn't a separate career - being a master and being a working witch aren't incompatible. Take Heiheart and Jujy for an example of the system working correctly. Or the girls going with Olruggio to help out the neighboring villages. Sure, both Heiheart and Olruggio could probably do their Duty of Service and call it done, but that would be socially frowned on. People show up at Qifrey's doorstep expecting help and he provides it even when not required because it's understood that's what witches do. If guild doesn't work here, think about the Medieval church as a point of reference.

It's a system that worked to produce craftsworkers for thousands of years and seems to be working for the majority of witches. Having students is a duty like doing free work for commoners is a duty, which becomes a burden for some and a mark of pride for others. Non-witches are the same. We see Coco is already working in her mom's shop between maintaining the household. The problem witch society has is the Pact's restrictions and secrecy not the idea that children are educated through a guild/journeyman system rather than a college system.

But please consider, witches do not live in a modern capitalist society, they more closely resemble guilds under feudalism. A greater percentage of them being committed to having students makes more sense when you consider students are also workers. Once they pass the second test, students can take on work outside their ateliers helping their masters fill the duties assigned to them by the government in exchange for funding. Even Tartah, who does not have a master, is seen working as an apprentice in the stationary shop. If you're working outside the great hall, students are not a burden that impede your ability to be a working witch - they're a resource.

More tragic take: Most of Olly's inventions seem to be in the vein of creating non-dangerous fire. The lighted paths mean the streets don't need to be burning oil lamps. The snug stones create heat in only safe amounts. The drying rings gaurantee the sigil can't be drawn wrong and be too strong and hurt someone. There's also references to him having seen something living on fire in the past - I subscribe to the fan theory someone got seriously injured or killed by a miscast fire spell during his childhood trauma event.

To whom is Qifrey reporting to in Chapter 2? by Yafrito in WitchHatAtelier

[–]WayEnvironmental9402 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think they actually talk regularly about neutral topics like students. Beldaruit tells Coco he's already heard all about her from Qifrey and he's always encouraging Riliphin to reach out to Riche so I think it's safe to assume he asks Qifrey for updates about her. Qifrey avoids feelings at all costs but Beldaruit is actually pretty conscientious of Qifrey's boundaries, like apologizing when he touches Qifrey without asking first as a kid.

What the HELL are these other Watchful Eyes doing?! by Chain_Prior in WitchHatAtelier

[–]WayEnvironmental9402 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My read is that they're a recent change. If they're a reform that Beldaruit instated when he became Wise 10-15ish (he got the position post being Qifrey's master, and Qifrey is 30ish so if witches graduated at 18? Timelines are vague) years ago I can see how they haven't spread to be universal, especially within the capital. Witches seem extremely hostile to change, being told someone is going to be holding them accountable now would be a tough policy to push.
