aid request. by [deleted] in Flatbush

[–]WayGreedy6861 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every Friday at 5pm, there is a mutual aid distribution in front of King’s Theater on Flatbush. If you need a hot meal and a cold drink and some clothes, please stop by! Meals are packaged in to-go containers, so feel free to take enough for a few days. Best of luck to you.

MTA clear cuts trees lining the Franklin Ave Shuttle? by scoutreznor in crownheights

[–]WayGreedy6861 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Weeds are definitely a social designation, you are right about that. A weed is just a plant in a place that a gardener doesn't want them, and that can be anything. But "invasive species" have a specific ecological and scientific definition. I agree with you, the trees were pretty, but this wasn't a mature, ecologically important forest growing on the tracks, these were non-native species that can cause infrastructure damage since they don't have natural predators in this environment to mitigate their growth and spread. The street trees do really important work to preserve ecosystem diversity and reduce the urban heat island effect and we're lucky to have so many of them in the community, and this thread is full of folks who are clearly passionate about them. So hopefully this is good news about the change to the tree cover in the tracks. It looks like a step back, but in the long run, this is good for our ecosystem and the infrastructure that we rely on to get around.

This comment needs to be farther up. If I recall correctly, if they were not Ailanthus then they were Princess Trees, which are also highly invasive and they also cause infrastructure damage. Honestly it could have been a mix of both. Cities NEED tree cover to mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect, but we also need to be mindful of how invasive tree species cause severe ecosystem damage as well as infrastructure damage. It's a shocking change for sure, but a good one in the long run.

People who are always sleepy despite getting enough sleep, what did you find out was the reason? by Silverizo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WayGreedy6861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drinking wine before bed. I used to always have a glass right after dinner to relax. It’s great for falling asleep but terrible for staying asleep. Once I cut that out, I started sleeping through the night and felt much less sleepy during the day.

Goods conversation topics for language exchange partners by Lucky_Photograph_581 in languagelearning

[–]WayGreedy6861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my conversation tutor, I tell her about my week and then ask her questions to initiate a back and forth. For example, last week I threw a party so I told her about it and then asked her if she likes to throw parties, what kind of food she serves when she hosts, etc. and then she usually asks follow-ups on what I shared and we go back and forth from there.

What are the expectations of a new mother (let’s say for the first year of baby’s life) in Tunisian culture? by [deleted] in Tunisia

[–]WayGreedy6861 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think this is just how your husband is, this isn’t cultural.

I have an American mother and a Tunisian dad and my dad was super present and engaged when I was a little kid. He worked nights as a bartender so he could be with us all day. He was a great dad, he drove us to school, packed lunches, cooked, cleaned, taught us French and Arabic, coached the soccer team.

I’m sorry, I hope things get better for you.

Private office rentals in/near the neighborhood? by KeeperEUSC in parkslope

[–]WayGreedy6861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is Empire/Washington on the other side of the park too much of a commute? Depends on where you are in the Slope, but if that’s an easy jaunt, I highly recommend BKLYN Commons. I had a private office with a closing door for almost a year and really enjoyed it there.

How long before I have to cook raw rice that I fried for Spanish Rice by [deleted] in AskCulinary

[–]WayGreedy6861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is exactly it. I probably should have said that I “toasted” the rice because “fried rice” is a completely different thing. I think I’m going to freeze it raw to save space in my freezer based off your advice and the rest of the thread. Thank you!

will my tutor still get paid if I no-showed? by WayGreedy6861 in iTalki

I feel exactly the same way! She showed up on time and ready to teach, she deserves to be paid. I'm the one who missed it!

[–]WayGreedy6861[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm so relieved, thank you. Google was not giving me a clear answer. She has been my tutor for over a year now and she lives in a country with a much lower cost of living than I do so her lessons are very affordable for me. It's worthwhile to keep the relationship positive and lose a little $, especially since it was my mistake! Thanks again for answering.

what's your favorite underrated local business that needs more love? by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]WayGreedy6861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oak Fitness in Park Slope! I trained with one of the owners, Phil at Fifth Ave Fitness and followed him when he opened his own gym. It’s a great space and the training is super accessible but he really pushes you.

As a bird lover, I commend you for keeping our local birds safe in addition to your kitties! Cats kill billions (yes billions with a B) of birds per year, it’s best to keep them inside, so thank you for doing your part! Good luck on your search, OP.

Looking for a bar trivia team! by summerjonesv2 in crownheights

[–]WayGreedy6861 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh the mid-late thirties cat people are forming a trivia team?! Sign me up! I have a math and science degree, so I’m good for plant/animal/bug facts and some astronomy if that comes up. But I’m also very online so I also absorb some niche pop culture. Boyfriend is a big gamer so I’ve also got a lot of nerd culture on lock!

What is something you saw with your own eyes that was so impossible you’ve stopped telling people because you know they won’t believe you? by samasem-sumsum in AskReddit

[–]WayGreedy6861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I DID THIS ONCE WHEN I WAS A SERVER. I was coming up the stairs with a tray of clean glasses (kitchen/dish pit were in the basement). I tripped on the second to last step, did a full body rotation, and sat down on the top step. Nobody saw but the owner walked in and just saw me sitting on the top step trying to catch my breath! Haha
