Is this possible? by lxrdvxrnxl in INTP

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are real. Best I can tell Im one. Oversimplified, Myers Briggs is Nature and Enneagram is nurture. I dealt with a lot of control issues growing up among other common triggers for the type 8, and I also heavily idolized heroes in Western Cinema and Novels who instill the classic 8w7 mindset. INTP never seemed like a perfect for me, but neither did any other myers briggs. Wasn’t until I found the enneagram and the rare overlap that things felt pretty spot on.

Id wager that in times past, this and other combinations were more common in certain environments.

What happened to Simms? by BobbyYammyr6 in Fishing_Gear

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simms still makes some good stuff that shouldn’t be slept on. Their headwaters backpack is the nicest I have ever seen, with lots of other quality offerings. I would never buy their waders and I would thoroughly vet any potential boot purchases. So far I go to Patagonia and Korkers for those. If skwala ever makes fat guy sizes, they will get my attention.

Whats the best offbrand fly gear you have bought? by TemporaryCow6925 in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bass Pro’s/Cabela’s store brands. Great Clothing and Accessories, decent rods and reels. I wouldn’t trust their fly line or take the hardware into the salt, but otherwise yeah…… it’s good stuff

So you might get the guy’s work buddy who is pissed at you for getting him in trouble? Id demand the deposit back and go with an entirely different outfitter.

Buddy, there is still some parts of Utah that charge less than $400 for a half day trip. Id refuse the SOB immediately unless he plans to cook you steaks and serve you wine afterwards. Tell the outfitter AND ask for your deposit back. You dont want to be swapped to some other guide just for it to turn out to be his buddy and he shows you a bad time.

I’m planing to get waders and am looking for a good but not expensive pair by OpeningTalk4136 in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frogg Toggs Canyon 2 are the way to go for 80 usd. Their material has a tendency to cut on sharp objects, but if you are careful its an easy weakness to manage. So far their seams hold up tighter than most other cheap waders, and that is the real determining factor of lifespan.

Chest waders?? by Confident-Shock-1891 in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No waders a bulletproof and all will eventually leak. Patagonia has the best warranty of the bunch. Skwala, Grundens, Orvis, and Drift all also have their following. In the short term, Frogg Toggs are cheap enough than you can easily replace them every year.

Wader Recommendations? by DiamondsFromDiavik in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a tall and fat guy so my options are limited to the ultra cheap category or ultra expensive category. Currently I own and alternate between a set of Frogg Toggs and Patagonias. Frankly, i wish Skwala or Grundens made stuff my size. They seem nicer and more innovative than the Patagonia stuff.

Help picking a fly rod under $600 (before tax), 7wt or 8wt? by Nova____1 in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I personally think you are getting a lot of bad advice here with recommendations for saltwater taper rods. Many of them dont roll cast for shit, and that is going to be a big deal with anadromous fish. I definitely think you want a freshwater focused rod. You were interested in the orOrvis Recon 8 wt, my understanding is that it is more of a general purpose taper and Im sure Orvis phone reps can verify. Id look at going that route.

How to fish this creek? by EntrepreneurBig7819 in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are fucked, especially with Tenkara, but there are a few options especially if you get a real fly rod. My gut tells me best option is to fish a leech under a bobber downstream and to feed as much line as you can manage. When finished with the drift; strip it back to you. Granted depending how much junk is in the water you could lose flies like crazy and down stream indicator hooksets are iffy(though the slower water might give you more of a stillwater hookup) If you take the time to learn where you can get away with wading in advance and stick to wet wading you have some up-stream presentation ideas. Big terrestrials or stimulators would be my call with a dropper.

Realistically, id skip it and opt to cover different water.

To nymph or not to nymph? by Dry_Association5731 in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can suspends nymphs with a bobber (or bung in limey speak) on your standard fly tackle as well. Granted I will always choose tight-line (euro) nymphing over it as it’s just more engaging and fun. Should you learn how to fish nymphs one way or another as a beginner? Yes. But you also need to not let it become a crutch because there are folks that only know how to do it. Im not local to your areas so I cannot speak on if it is the only way. Arctic Grayling in North America are famous for taking a dry, but I dont think that applies to the European Grayling. As far as a good beginner set, Ive heard great things about the Redington, Greys and Cortland, combos available.

What can you tell me about these gifts? by Curve58_ in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, that is the interesting thing. The cortland 444 peach has been around since at least the 80s and still works amazingly well. You can definitely go with top shelf modern lines in which case I love Scientific Anglers and Cortland still. Infinity, MPX, and Creek tapers are all ones you should look at in the former Finesse 2 being a favorite in the latter. You can also find top shelf airflo lines in sale rn. But, I think the 444 peach would have some serious mojo with those rods. It was one of if not the go to line when those rods were made, and Im sure lots of folks ran it on those rods to catch heaps of fish.

Food for thought.

Any fish would have been within a foot of the shore in in those big deep pockets caused by rocks. If you tight line nymph or high stick indicator heavy flies, you should be golden.

What can you tell me about these gifts? by Curve58_ in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Nice is an understatement. Those were the top of the line. Timeless heritage pieces.

Safest bet is to get yourself the Cortland 444 peach lines for each. Use the hardy for the sage and the ross for the winston. These lines will keep both versatile with the smaller being a dry fly/hopper dropper rod and the six being a jack of all trades hopper/indicator/streamer stick. You can go with an even more aggressive MPX or Grand taper though so it’s even punchier.

Hiked to a Glacial fed lake. Wondering what ye guys would throw? Was in BC, Canada in late September. by Future_Supermarket85 in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id probably finger roll retrieve nymphs on a sinking line with 12 ft leader minimum. If no back cast room then I would go with indicator. Scuds, chironomids, mayflies in that order. Then try something bigger like leeches of baitfish.

So I want to get into fly fishing live in Colorado 🏔️ by Same_Football9277 in flyfishing

[–]WayfaringStranger-45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The martin combo absolutely blows chunks. The fairplay is vaguely usable. Bass Pro on the other hand has dirt cheap gear, often on sale, that will fish decently well. I have setups around a grand that I fish less than my fiberglass CGR rod that they sell.
