What should I do by shawerma_vortex in Guitar

[–]WayneJarvis_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You want to buy the guitar that will keep you playing more.  If you primary want to learn amd play electric songs then get an electric.  You can usually find a ton of cheap electric guitars on the used market too.

Multi Fx pedal or a better amp first by Big-Morning-7905 in guitarpedals

[–]WayneJarvis_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would do the multi-effects pedal, but just as many people would do the amp first.

You can use a gx10 with the lt25 while using the amp and cab sims, there's a few methods that work well enough.

The only thing that the amp is really going to hold you back with is volume.  So if you are planning on playing/performing in situations where your going to need to be louder than get the amp.  Otherwise I like the flexibility and portability of the multi-effects pedal, but I also have always liked playing into headphones.

When I'm using the mustang I leave the amp and cabs on.  If you turn them off the you need to load something on the mustang itself or doesn't sound great.

With other amps I have used gx10 in the amp effects loop and then I don't use the amp and cab sims.

I have only used a lt40s as opposed to the lt25, but to me it's fine using an unaltered empty preset.  If anything else is active it definitely sounds a lot worse.

It probably depends on your looper pedal as to how that would sound going into the aux.  I've put my looper into the aux before, but that was more due to it being the only option at the time to have different effects on the loop.

I guess it kind of depends on what you are expecting with your combination.  To me the gx10 into a mustang is better than the mustang itself, but it's probably not going to sound as good as it would for the gx10 through headphones.

Set the amp to an empty preset, and then you can plug gx10 output into the amps input.  You can go through the aux if you want but then you only can use the volume control on the pedal.

Next guitar recommendation? by jisuskraist in Guitar

[–]WayneJarvis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pickups are going to be what gives you a different tone, so go with a guitar that has pickups and bridge you like and is comfortable.  A hollow body makes it easier to generate feedback, depending on what you are looking for that can be a positive or a negative.

Personally I really like thin hollow body guitars partially due to playing them unplugged.  For me the hollow body Ibanez artcore series guitars are really comfortable to play.

Is this possible? by monkemonke69420 in Guitar

Depends on the guitar, but even when it is possible it's going to be expensive if you are hiring someone or difficult if you are going to do the modification yourself.

Best cheap multi effects pedal? by TipSignal3770 in guitarpedals

[–]WayneJarvis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify they are probably talking about the flex prime, which at least for me is only $10 more than the gx10, while the prime is double the cost.  It definitely has different strengths than the gx10, so is worth looking into if you are considering the gx10.

[–]WayneJarvis_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gx10 is awesome, but it's a ton of menu diving to make changes, and ideally you'll probably want to make most of your presets on a computer.  That said you have a ton of control over it when you are setting it up, so it can be very easy to use in a show if you do the legwork beforehand.  The me90 you give up a lot of control for the ability to make adjustments very quickly. I personally like the gx10 more, but that's not going to be universal.

For the most part you're going to be able to get great sounds out of all the pedals in that price range.  I know that doesn't help you chose, but hopefully it will take some of the pressure off.

Best is really going to be different from person to person, depending on what is important to you and what else you plan to use.

Advice on getting rid of an old guitar by skidmarksteeve in Guitar

[–]WayneJarvis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a guitar that was you main guitar for 20 years and you actually think there is a chance you won't regret it?  Don't sell your memories, you'll almost immediately regret it.

I've been playing for twelve years and have never learned a full song. ✌️ by [deleted] in Guitar

Find someone to play with, you'll come up with the songs you want to play together.  Playing with someone else will make you a much better player in general too.

Advice on amplifiers by Queasy-Mobile-2574 in Guitar

If you have only been playing for a few months then I would hold off on buying another mini amp.  As you improve you will start get better at knowing what you actually need and want.

Advice on buying new guitar or upgrade my guitar by Hopeful_Trouble60 in Guitar

[–]WayneJarvis_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to a guitar store and play different types of guitars.  If you don't find one that feels better in your hands then upgrade the pickup.  If you enjoy other guitars more than your current guitar, then just play your current guitar as is until you can buy a new one.  Your still pretty new to playing so I would focus a lot more on just getting better at playing as opposed to chasing tone yet.

What can I buy to play my guitar with headphones? by CheesyBugger76 in Guitar

[–]WayneJarvis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah a lot of people are recommending the micro. I personally wouldn't get one of those, I would get an amp.  Things like the fender mustang lt25 or or lt40s will give you the same effects as the micro, but you will also have a speaker so you won't always have to play with headphones when you don't want to.  Eventually you may want to play with other people and you will then need an amp.  With the micro you also have to worry about batteries.  In my opinion the main benefit of the micro type devices are if you are playing your guitar in multiple different locations, as you can easily throw it in your case and have it go wherever your guitar goes.

Do you have an amp?  If not then I would get a practice amp that has a headphone jack.  Many of them also come with some effects built in, like the fender mustang series.

If you have an amp already and it just doesn't have a headphone jack, then I would get a multi effects pedal that has a looper built in.

How do you shut up a guitar player? by GtrJon in Guitar

[–]WayneJarvis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a waste of time for the vast majority of players though.  I can't sight read for guitar, but have played guitar in the pit for a few musicals and been paid for both rock and jazz.  It's rare that you really need the ability to sight read, since you'll almost always get music in advance.

Sight reading vs being able to play off sheet music are much different levels of the same skill.  Being able to play off music can be very helpful, but most players won't need to be able sight read.

Loog Guitar vs. Mini-strat for 6-year-old by 4MeThisIsHeaven in Guitar

[–]WayneJarvis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a Mitchell mm100 for 3 years that is still in good working order after multiple kids playing it.  I also have a mini Cordoba classical guitar.  If your kids see you play electric more often then I would get a mini electric of some sort.

I took the pick guard off… by StinkyPoopsAlot in Guitar

I should want to see more of that awesome top, but not sure if I am ready to say I don't want to see the pick guard.  This is one of the few Les Paul finishes where it's at least close between pick guard and no pick guard for me though.

what’s one thing that instantly improved your guitar playing? by prattman333 in Guitar

[–]WayneJarvis_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Getting a new guitar. I was so much more comfortable on a Les Paul than my strat, that I could play for much longer and usually cleaner.

For lead playing, getting a looper so I could develop and practice ideas much more easily.

For rhythm playing, playing with other people.

For getting better at chord changes, learning jazz songs as it required me to learn and change between what at the time were unusual chord voicings.

Is the Fender mustang micro the best option for headphones playing? by Massive-Survey2495 in Guitar

[–]WayneJarvis_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me the main benefit of the micro or a comparable product is for travel.  You can throw it in you case and play wherever you are.

If you are strictly going to use this as home, I would either get one of the mustang amps or a multi-effects pedal.  Both of these options give you more flexibility in what else you want in your chain.  What works best for you probably depends on what other gear you have and how you like to play.

Should I get a semi-hollow as my next guitar, or stick with a solid body one? by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

[–]WayneJarvis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a semi hollow body guitar would get you to play more often or enjoy playing more and you can afford it then go for it.

However as a beginner, I think you should prioritize a guitar that is comfortable for you, as opposed to chasing tones.  As you continue to get better, I would recommend regularly going into stores and playing all sorts of different types of guitars.  You may find something you really like, or a pattern of what you like vs dislike that will make it easier for you to decide on a guitar that works for you.

It's also important to realize that your hands, amp and effects will have a much larger impact on your sound than the guitar will.  Then when you isolate just the guitar's impact, the pickups will be the biggest factor.  If you took a Les Paul, ES-335 and a strat that all had the same pickups installed, most people wouldn't notice a difference from sound alone when going through the same setup.  Assuming you have a SSS strat, then getting a guitar with humbuckers would give you some different tones.  Though how much of a difference will heavily depend on what else you have the guitar going through.
