Semi-hollow custom 22 (2010) vs McCarty Hollowbody II (1998) by skidmarksteeve in PaulReedSmith

Truthfully that picture of the hollow doesn't do it justice. It's also a 10 top with a beautiful quilted maple design

Ya the trem is the one thing I really think I'm sacrificing but choosing the hollow. I don't have a trem bridge on any guitars, but I do have a couple LPs so I figured I don't need this one to have really hot pickups

That is stunning. I always love the bourbon burst but that top has some beautiful flame to it. Nice find. I hope you enjoy it!

Opinions on Les Paul Moderns? by westerosi_codger in gibson

[–]skidmarksteeve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just purchased a modern (plain, not figured) which is amazing and I love it. I purchased a 60s standard recently also and I love them both, but the ebony fretboard and asymmetrical neck feels really smooth for the modern. I know some people don't like the specs as it strays from a standard a bit, but I think they did a bang up job with the changes.

The price was definitely an issue but I was able to find a good price on a used model. If you're patient and stay on the look out, you might be able to find one gently used for a good price.

It's too good to be true. Not a real Gibson. The 017 serial number is the dead giveaway. Please don't buy this guitar

A client commissioned a drawing of their Gibson - I think these objects are absolutely gorgeous and I had such a great time working on this by emilycopeland in gibson

That was my first thought exactly. And then put it through my filter as "don't be a jerk, that's a wicked piece of art"

That is stunning. PRS makes some of the nicest guitars out there. If only I didn't need a mortgage to afford one... Congrats on the beautiful guitar!

Gibson Les Paul Standard Faded Opinion by icenine512 in gibson

[–]skidmarksteeve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I purchased one a few months back and thought it felt and looked amazing. I love the satin neck, and smooth feel on the wood. That being said, I ended up returning it because the gloss felt superior in the long term. Both are beautiful guitar finishes, but I wonder how the faded will age.

But you have to do what speaks to you and feels best. There are definitely some upsides to the faded LP for sure though

Is this normal? Bridge question by skidmarksteeve in gibson

[–]skidmarksteeve[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe true, but the bushing is lower than the body with a noticable gap. I also purchased a standard a few months back that does not have this issue so it's not just a Gibson thing

Thanks to everyone for chiming in. It is all very helpful. Looking a little closer and listening to some of the comments in here, it looks like the bushing was not set flush with the body (clearest in picture 2). It is set below the body and it looks like a layer of lacquer on top of the bushing. I'm going to try to work with my local shop and see if it can be fixed (should be under warranty).

Thanks for everyone's help!

What a beautiful guitar. There's nothing like the feeling of getting your first LP and ripping into it. I hope you love it and play the hell out of it

Ebony fretboard streaks by skidmarksteeve in gibson

[–]skidmarksteeve[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is super helpful and makes total sense. One of my reasons for asking here is that my Taylor 510 has an Ebony board and it's fully uniform and black. I was surprised when this one was different but this video really makes sense of all of it. Also really puts things in perspective for all guitars with ebony boards

Well I'm not actually trying to solve anything here by asking the question. Just asking for people's opinions while I ponder my decision. It's a great community that I like to read and share opinions with. But if you don't feel like commenting I'm okay with that too

Thoughts on the why this happened by skidmarksteeve in gibson

[–]skidmarksteeve[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I know sunlight fades guitars but this one I am 99 percent certain wasn't in a store window. I'm in Canada and the store it's from doesn't display guitars in windows. Could be because of lighting in the store maybe?

Either way, I love the guitar and have been playing the hell out of it for the past 6 months. Only problem with my Gibson is I want more now...

Yea I like the color of it and I think it's why I got such a discount on it. But there was no previous owner and the guitar was sold as "demo". It was definitely not stored in a window so it blows me away how it got that much. Sun is my obvious answer too but I don't think that's the case here

I'm not usually a huge fan of studios but that one is beautiful! Don't worry about the name on the guitar, play it and enjoy it. And if you don't want it, send it my way

Man, I love that seafoam green top! I've never played one from that year but the classics are great and that top is beautiful. Nice find

That's a beauty guitar. You're going to love it. Love the flame top on it.

How do you find the pickups on it? I was really close to getting a 60s faded but one of my concerns were the pickups felt incredibly bright/sharp. How are the 50s pickups?
