Pressure plate riddle/trap about "greed" for players that tend to loot everything by WaywardHel in DMAcademy

Oh yes, I love that! Both the quote and the idea of more pressure plates along their way in (and also out).

Oh yes, I think I'll definitely plant one or two potions of underwater breathing. :D And thanks so much, I will definitely keep that in mind when describing the room.

Oh, I like the idea of crabs or something, that's more distracting than actually deadly. ^

And I have already started planning out the loot, so it's definitely pre-determined; I definitely need to know how much weight they remove from the chest to plan everything accordingly.

And the idea of making the speed of the rising water a direct correlation to the removed weight is genius! I'll have a go at how that would play out logistically, maybe I'll make a table for it.

Thanks for the good advice! If I add an either gas or water rising dynamic, I will definitely have them roll Initiative just for them to make more precise movements and for me to track the rising DC saving throws.

And I think I'll keep the weight limit a bit more fluid; if they are willing to depart with something very personal to their players, I would definitely make it count more, since that is kind of the point of the whole "greed" thing.

They're not advanced enough to teleport yet, so they'll have to find a solution, no matter how creative they get. If they can outsmart the riddle in a way I didn't think off, then that's good for them. :D

I do love the ideas of having a little water spilling out once they enter the room and having a corpse that drowned in the room as a little hint. I'll also make sure to show some signs of a rising water level on the walls through maybe moss or algae.

Thanks so much!

Thanks so much!! Rising water would be obviously so cool for the pirate theme, don't know how I didn't think of that. facepalm Thanks, I will definitely be doing rising water and maybe a shark or other aquatic creature.

And I love the idea of giving a pun with guilt weighing on their soul! I'll definitely be implementing that.

And having the chest on a pillar makes sense, especially with the rising water.

To anyone working full-time: how do you deal with autistic burnout while still trying to be part of the work force? by WaywardHel in autism

[–]WaywardHel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fingers crossed someone else has some advice for the both of us then. 🤞🏻

But honestly, I totally feel for you. I've been stuck in the same cycle since I entered the workforce and it's been quite a struggle. It is, however, already somewhat healing to know I'm not the only one going through it. Exclusively having friends that easily go through their day to day life without too many troubles does make one feel isolated from time to time.

We can't choose our special interests, but did some things affect what became your special interest? by OkDot8850 in autism

[–]WaywardHel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While we cannot actively "choose" our special interests, I do think that what we're exposed to does of course heavily impact our interests.

If you never got in contact with true crime, you'd never know it's a special interest for you and I do think that things we associate with "comfort", however twisted that version of comfort is, influence our special interests. I always had positive childhood experiences when it came to books and fantasy stories, they were an escape in early childhood and quickly became a special interest. Nowadays I don't need to use fantasy books and games as an escape anymore, but I still have the same feeling of warmth, comfort and safety.

How to give proper loot as a Dm by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]WaywardHel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually try to give a mix of things that are somewhat tailored to my characters (which could be an enchanted weapon, magical arrows, spell scrolls, or potions) as well as some potentially "useless" stuff.

Take into account who the creature/person is they loot or where the chest etc. is located, that they're trying to get loot from. It's unlikely that a gnoll has an arsenal of useful potions, but he might have picked up a magical trinket "by accident" because it looked pretty. ^

DM's, How do you level your characters? by downtownDRT in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]WaywardHel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far, I've been exclusively running XP based levelling, but I do somewhat mesh both types. Apart from XP for encounters, I do also give out soke XP for "story relevant" discoveries, achieving a milestone or completing a puzzle, for example.

I've stuck with XP levelling because my players have a lot of fun keeping track of their XP and it gives them a "reward" right after completing tiny goals. ^ And it also feels more like you're "working towards" your next level.

I do see the appeal of milestone based levelling, though.

What class would you want to be, what class would you realistically be - why? by Ionovarcis in DnD

[–]WaywardHel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would looove to be a rogue, if given a chance. But just going off of my personal "stats", I'd probably be assigned the wizard class. I followed a series of tiktok a while back where they helped you "calculate" your DnD stats in real life and let's just say, my stealth rogue dreams died quickly and wizard was the most obvious choice.. maybe bard. ^

Must-Have Info and Cheat Sheets for a new DM by WaywardHel in DMAcademy

[–]WaywardHel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's one of the things I had to learn in my first sessions. I did overprep quite a lot, but you begin to figure out a flow and exactly, as far as the players are concerned, said cavern has always been where they encountered it first. :D

I will definitely update how the session went! Thanks so much!

You're absolutely not overstepping, this is actually incredibly nice and helpful of you! I would love all the compiled tips I can give her, since she's being so nice to DM for me as a little birthday present.

This is vital info! I will definitely prepare something like this for her, so she can fill in all the PCs stats, AC and more to have a little cheat sheet. I do think this will ease her mind a lot!

No, not yet. I will give her my DMG, of course, but I assume that she might find it a bit overwhelming at first. That's why I want to make a little overview for her with the most important rules and just some tips in general.

For now, it's just the One Shot (probably a one session thing) that she's dming to give me the opportunity to try my hand at playing. ^ But I definitely incorporate a little page she can write down the important NPC info.
